Guest Negatorris
Matt Ryan is not average. He is a good QB, and no matter how you look at it, not a lot players in his position could do much better. The media, and the fans have put all this pressure on Ryan about his 0-2 record in the P/O(now 0-3), and he was simply trying to please people and not be ridiculed and blamed again. That's why Ryan seemed uneasy and hesitant. Trying to limit his own mistakes, he resorted to dinking and dunking all day, and bad decisions by Mike Smith, and horrible O Line play didn't help. You forget that Ryan is human too. He has emotions, and it would crush him to know he was the cause of yet another loss. This led to what happened today. In no way am I justifying his actions. I'm just telling what actually happened. Going into a hostile environment with the pressure of no playoff wins to your name effected his mind, and Ryan went form young and confident to frail and scared. It's bad to say, but I don't think Ryan will ever win a playoff game on road unless it's against a team that backed into the playoffs. And he won't win a home playoff game as the 1, or 2 seed. I think the only way the Falcons will win a playoff game is if we win the division, and get a home game in the first round. I think Ryan will feel more comfortable with his fans around him, and it will ease some of the pressure crushing his confidence. After he gets that win, the weight will be lifted off his shoulders, and ultimately he will go out on the road and perform. The mental aspect of the game outweighs the physical aspect, and I would know since I played QB in high school, a long with a lot of other sports.People don't realize what is takes to play QB, and it can't get any easier in the pros, especially when you get picked high in the draft. If Andrew Luck comes out of the draft, and doesn't perform to the level everyone expected, people will be quick to call the kid a bust. No he's not a bust... Trying to perform under the pressure, people could mentally injure him and make him nervous. I mean people are expecting this kid to come out of Stanford and be elite. I guarantee you that RGIII will have more success in his rookie season since the spotlight isn't as focused on him as Andrew Luck.Matt Ryan is a good QB, and he will be our QB for years to come, unless he stinks it up for the next two years considering his contract is up after 6 years. I know we as Falcons fans have been waiting for a long time, but there is nothing we can do but wait a little longer. We are always left waiting on next season, but it has got to pay off eventually...I may be optimistic, but I'm not going to attack the man who made us relevant again after all this organization has been through. Ryan is not going to take off for a 50 yard scramble like Vick or Tebow, but to say the kid isn't a playmaker is incredibly stupid. He is more solid than Vick and Tebow will ever be, and you can bet on that. Also, would you rather have Flacco or Sanchez right now? I don't think so. We don't have a superior defense in order for those two to win here.

paulitik
I don't think that it was pressure, or that Matt played as terribly as everyone believes, considering what was going on the field, or "taking what the defense gives you" as Smitty would say. Considering the protection, I think it's pretty impressive he didn't get sacked more, or was forced into a turnover. When he was flushed out of the pocket, I didn't see all these imaginary wide open receivers to throw to 50 yards down the field waving their imaginary hands in the end zone.I did see Matt throw to Roddy on crucial 3rd downs and he dropped it. That happened couple times. The only drag route to Julio, probably our most effective explosive play was on a 3rd and 20 something, and it was 2-3 yards short. I saw Roddy catch a ball and sit down half a yard before the sticks, because we only have him run comebacks.I saw Matt under throw one pass, that still could've been caught, and I saw him trip scrambling, and I saw the coach let 20 seconds tick off the clock and not call a TO, on a series that start with over a minute left in the half, a half we went into with 2 TOs unused. I saw Michael Turner tiptoe, and not be able to get around the edge, and I saw us run it up the middle whole lot. I saw an OL get their lunch taken from them. I see a lot of energy wasted blaming someone who is probably rank 15th if there was an order in which you can assign blame, get the majority of the heat. Dump him if he doesn't pull his finger out next year!Drew Brees:First full starting season(2002) 8-8Lost his starting job the next season for poor playNext season led his team to a 12-4 record and went one and done at home as the #4 seedNext season he didn't play at all, with a shoulder injuryYou can't tell me he wasn't suffering mentally with all thisSigned with the Saints in 2006, went 10-6 and got to the NFCCG where his team got manhandled by the Bears, the 1 seed.Next year(2007) Brees went 7-9.The next season(2008) Brees went 8-8.You can't tell me the Saints fans didn't have their doubts at this point. The Saints were literally going nowhere. Brees was 1-2 in the playoffs with the lone win coming against a backup QB in the Superdome. We all know what happened in 2009.Brees is a veteran, and it took a LONG time for him to get any production, but the annoying ******* is breaking records and frankly beating us every time we meet. I remember people saying he could never win the big one, and that he was a mediocre regular season QB, but look at Brees now. You fans give Ryan no breaks. Every season it's SB or Bust for you, but I see 20 other teams that would love to just have a winning season, and their fans aren't as nearly as bad as ours. It's ridiculous. Does Ryan need to go 16-0 every season, and win a SB? I'd like that, but it's not going to happen, and as someone with logic I understand only one team can make it to the SB each year, and if it's not us, then what can I truly do about it. I'm just tired of seeing all this unwarranted bashing from our fans. Especially on the guy who dragged the Falcons out of the hole they were in.Not to mention, I haven't even talked about the horrible things some of you so called fans have been saying to Brent Grimes on Twitter. What kind of fans go and attack the players? It's really frustrating...

But I think Ryan didn't want to mess up, and that's the main reason his stats represent dinking and dunking to your heart's content. The whole team is to blame. Turner running into piles and just tip toeing, Roddy dropping balls. Don't get me started on the coaching by Smitty. The worst coaching by the staff, other than BVG. DirtyBirdInThe610
What Matt Ryan Needs To Elevate His Game:1.A new LT and OG2.A new OC hopefully Mularkey gets one of those HC jobs he's up for.3.Develope a consistent deep ball.4.Be a more evasive QB ecspecially if we don't improve the o-line. niels petersen
I think it really is pretty simple.Ryan has lost faith in this offensive scheme.. Just look at how he competed and slung it around in his first season. PLayed with much more instinct and confidence - even in the playoffs vs. the Cards. He almost mounted a comeback, but our defense couldn't stop them when it counted the most. We scored 24 point if I remember correctly. In 2010, we had a total meltdown. Ryan didn't play well, but what really broke that game was the interception before half (GB said they knew what play was coming) and the fact that we didn't force a punt once. At least we put up 14 points on offense.. 2011, our offense has regressed even worse, and we cannot score once. Mike Smith goes multiple times on 4th down, both sneaks, and one where Turner isn't even in the lineup... Our defense played much better than in previous playoff games, but can't carry the load without the offense scoring ANY points! ****!Mularkey has coached this offense from a developing force, into a predictable, old school offense, that can easily be stopped, because the playcalling is horrible, as well as the route designs in the passing game.My point is. I think it is obvious that the players, especially Ryan but also Roddy, judging from interviews during the season, have lost faith in the offense.. Just look at Ryans post game interview. The way he talks about the missed 4th down conversions, he seems so frustrated and irritated, but still says all the right things. He doesn't call his coaches and OC out, because he is too professional to do that, but sometimes I wish he would, so we could find out what he believes is the problem..We need to fire MM ASAP!! Then Dimitroff and Smith needs to sit down with Ryan and tell him to tell them what problems we have on this offense, and ask him which direction Ryan wants this offense to go in.. And then, bring him in on the decision about who to hire as the next OC. We need someone Ryan and the rest of the team can have faith in..Just look at how far faith can take you. Tebow did what everyone thought was impossible (albeit it is a different kind of faith, but his faith in God helps him keep faith in his own abilities). We just need our team and QB to have faith in the system, and their own abilities, and we will be able to go a long way! That faith have been declining every season MM has been here, and it shows when we get to the big playoff games.. Teams and players who have faith in their respective offense play like the Broncos, the Saints, and even the Lions when the playoffs come around. Teams who don't have faith put up duds like the one we did.We need a change of OC, and a change of mental culture, right now!! Aftermath
Matt did what MM and Smith wanted him to do, he played it safe and took only what the defense gave, who would have knew that avoiding turnovers by playing ultra conservative was even less productive than airing it out, go figure. I watched Matty while he was at BC, he was never afraid to sling it around and take shots down field even if his WR wasn't completely open, sure he had plenty of Ints but he also put that team on his back. It seems like the coaches doesn't want to score points.. They have this offense playing scared, and put way too much pressure on Ryan, by being so predictable in the playcalling. Turner up the middle from a big formation on every 1st down isn't going to be successful for an entire game, and when the defense stops it, suddenly we find ourselves in more 3rd and longs than we wanted top, coming into a game vs a team with a great DL.. WTF?We shoot ourselves in the foot with this conservativeness and predictability.. We are our own worst enemy! Why do we have to make it so hard for ourselves to score points! F*ck it bothers me to no end!!

Ryan did throw a bunch of ints in college, but that was because he really just wanted to make a play for his team.. And his teammates supported him. That ability is now gone, because of this ultra-conservative coaching staff from the stone-age.. Therefore he has lost faith, and of course so will his teammates..No excuse to not play to your franchise QB's strenghts, but coach them out of him instead.. It pisses me off!I really wonder if MM is going to get a HC job anywhere.. I don't think so.. His contract is up right? Cause I really don't want him back.. I find it kind of funny though, with all the conservative playcalling, that Smith has gone for it so many times this year, and especially in the big games?? How does that fit in with the conservative playcalling, and no turnovers approach? I think it is because even Smith knows that Mularkey is holding this team back, and we had to have some points to restore any faith in the offense.. But who knows. All I know is, that I want that conservativeness gone - and I never ever ever want to hear the phrase "we just didn't execute" again!!!! It has become so apparant that it is not just execution, so just tell it like it is, call out the problem!!

Guest Gritz
I'd actually like to see the Falcons bring in a later round or FA QB who could really push Ryan.....Someone other than an insurance salesman or a never-will-be like John Parker Wilson.Ryan's current problem is that the ultra-conservative and unimaginative play calling/philosophies of Smith and Mularkey have essentially castrated him. He plays both safe and scared....two things that are deadly in an NFL QB. Combine those 2 unfortunate characteristics with a very average, leaky offensive line and you get what we have.....a gun shy QB who plays scared. niels petersen
Absolutely spot on post! Thanks Msalmon.. I just really want this team to beam of confidence when we get to the big games, but somehow we play the game with no fire or confidence and like we are scared of the opponent.. When you get to the playoffs, everything gets bigger and more imoprtant, and when you can't even rally around eachother to score just a single offensive point, people are hanging their heads on the sidelines, players not talking and supporting eachother, the HC just standing around looking depressed - then I think it shows a lack of confidence and faith in the system we have on offense.Everybode knows we have to dictate the tempo of the game to be succesful. But when id doesn't go our way, we have no answer - and the players have no one on the offensive staff to turn to, to look for inspiration, confidence, and faith!! Flying Falcon

Combine those 2 unfortunate characteristics with a very average, leaky offensive line and you get what we have.....a gun shy QB who plays scared.I'd prefer the rookie QBthat made mistakes to the version that we have now, four years have turned into empty stats for the most part, he could have been the type of QB to put the team on his back but they beat that out of him. Hopefully he can get it back, he has the talent, just has to get his mind right. If he can't it might be time to consider other options in a few years. FalconinPA
LMFAO!!! It is funny how this fanbase tears the team apart but Matt Ryan is still not held accountable in most fans eyes. Who knows what the future holds for Ryan, he may be able to reach that so called elite status that many of our fans want him to be. However, doesn't change the fact that he looked losted once again and is 0-3. He is a big part of the loss yesterday.

Hoping and jumping around when no one was near him. Running out of the pocket when there was no rush. That dude is aweful.
