The Realistic Offseason Thread.

Recommended Posts

Post hear any and all moves you would like to see that are within the realm of possibility and make sense for both parties.

Maybe who won't be resigned, maybe who will be fired/cut. Trades? Whatever.

I'll start it off with this:

Our free agents are:

Quarterback Chris Redman (don't think he is resigned)

Running back Jason Snelling (DEFINITELY won't be resigned)

Running back Antone Smith (not resigned)

Wide receiver Harry Douglas (have to bring him back, the WR corps is set)

Tight end Michael Palmer (bring him back, get TG replacement when TG's money comes off the books)

Center Todd McClure (I think he retires or is brought back for one more year)

Defensive tackle Vance Walker (no reason to shakeup DTs)

Linebacker Mike Peterson (it's time to move on)

Linebacker Curtis Lofton (HAVE to bring him back)

Cornerback Brent Grimes (resign him or you'll have to bring in TWO very good corners)

Safety Thomas DeCoud (letting him go wouldn't be a mistake, good depth though)

Kick returner Eric Weems (bring him back, no need to seek a returner)

Long snapper Joe Zelenka (bring him back)

You forgot Abe on the list. Anyways, I'd like to see Turner's slow *** out of here. We need a legitimate RG, Carl Nicks is ideal. On D, we need a pass rusher along side Abe. Mario Williams is a longshot. Can we get rid of Edwards? Linebackers should be set, solid group. Dunta and the FS spot need addressing as well.

Definitely. The third leading rushing is always such an annoyance to a team that he must be cut. I mean, if we can get a guy like Matt Forte or Fred Jackson then **** YEA, do it. Otherwise, stop it.

I wouldn't cut Edwards after only one season. I say let Lofton walk and find a better MLB. People want Decoud gone but I say keep him and get rid of his position coach instead.Resign Grimes yes. Other than that, I agree with the OP on everything.

Lofton

HUGE liability in pass coverage

Not very athletic to do anything in pass coverage and not very quick or fast (even for a MLB)

Average to below instinct for the role he serves in our defense

Redman's not resigned means we go with JPW as backup.

Snelling may not sign with us, but I don't think it will be because we don't want him to.

Smith, solid on STs, but that's it.

Douglas, I could go either way. I wouldn't mind seeing him leave, but if he stays, someone needs to come in who can challenge him in the slot.

Walker/Peterson/Lofton agree.

Grimes, will be interesting. If we go with a new DC and want to get out of the zone scheme, we may let Grimes walk. Dunta, Franks, & Owens are all better in man coverage than zone. Plus zones are becoming ridiculously easy to pick apart with the more & more lax rules in the passing game. We could go this route & try to pick up 1 more man corner.

Only reason to keep DeCoud is depth. Let him know tomorrow at his exit interview that the only reason for him to stay is if he wants to be a backup.

Weems/Zelenka, agree.

Bold (so-called unrealistic) moves are sometimes necessary.

Letting Lofon walk with nothing to replace him with is definitely bold.

Fire Murlarkey. Sign Carl Nicks (G). Pick up Chris Polk (RB) first in the draft to split carries with Turner (therefore giving our running game a much-needed extra layer) and eventually replace him when his contract expires, also pick up a decent Tackle, plus anything to fill-in the gaps since I find that innevitable that we will lose a major FA or two (We can't keep the whole gang in Lofton, Grimes, Abe, DeCoud etc)

We can't shuffle around things too drastically, continuity makes a great team. Just look at Philly and their 'Dream Team'. We only need to make a few altercations and, for the most part, let our team continue to gel and develop. Going to the postseason 3/4 years means something's working. smile.png

Basically a realistic and dream offseason.

Sign Ralph Friedgen, Offensive Coordinator.

Keep:

John Abraham

Brent Grimes

Curtis Lofton

Harry Douglas

James Sanders

Thomas DeCoud

Restructure:

Dunta Robinson

Let Go:

Kelvin Hayden

Sam Baker

Eric Weems

Anyone Smith

Fringe Players:

Kroy Beirmann

Jason Snelling

Todd McClure

Ray Edwards

Vance Walker

Free Agency:

Ben Grubbs or Carl Nicks, OGs

Amobi Okoye, DT

Draft:

2. Curry, DE Marshall

3. Mike Brewster, C Ohio State

5. Jamell Fleming, CB Oklahoma

6. Terrance Gamaway, RB Baylor

7. James Brown, OT Troy

UDFA:

Danny Coale, WR Virginia Tech

Basically we shore up our interior line, finally allowing Ryan to be able to step up in the pocket like we see Brees and Rodgers do. We draft a solid pass rushing DE opposite of Abraham. Another solid zone CB that can compete with Owens, Franks, and Dunta. Sign a DT that can help Babs and Peters. Draft Turner or Snellings replacement. Get some developmental starter type players. Get Weems possible replacement too.

We get worse with this offseason. Who is returning kicks? (Not MAJOR but it does matter). We're going to rely on a rookie at DE and not address our glaring need for another secondary guy/OLB?

We have a better chance gettin dabrickashaw Ferguson which would be a very smart move since we wnt be in ANY position to get a LT unless in FA... Nicks is going to want to much money... And we dnt know wat Johnson can do sine he hit IR early in the year... All I know is this offense isn't going to get anywhere untill we shore up the line no matter who the OC is....

Coale or Franks can do better than Weems at this point let's be honest. Asa Jackson could also. Yeah a rookie DE like Curry would help our defensive line trust me. Unless you want to keep relying on Edwards or act like signing Mario is even possible, you are setting yourself up for failure.

Okay dude who are we going to get realistically, hence the name of the thread, that is going to be a game changer in the secondary. We need to draft OL and DL with our top picks and sign another trench guy via free agency that would solidify our OL and give our QB a chance to step up. So who outside the first three rounds would help our secondary? The CB Fleming is a good steal in the 5th.

OLB isn't a glaring need...

You asked for realistic and there you go. I don't do the Madden ********

Cut Turner, sign Forte

Billick (HC), Spagnuolo (DC) and Gruden (OC) replaces the stagnant staff we currently have (Thanks for what you've done for the team, Smitty, but your services are no longer needed. You have shown a complete lack of understanding what this team is capable... AND INCAPABLE... of doing in any given situation).

So far, that's my offseason wish list.

Lofton is one of the better LBs in the league... How many MLB are very athletic??? I think u should recheck that statement. Along with bringing decoud back... Decoud is wat he is. A stiff S who has bad instincts and takes bad angles.. lofton, grimes and Abel should be the only ppl on defense to come back... maybe kroy...

Should really consider weather Edwards was the right decision... Same to be said about dunta. That's close to 90mil combined and nothing close to its prodution...

I would like to see Abe, Snelling, Grimes, Lofton, Zelenka, Walker and HD back. I think Weems might be good as well since he should be cheap, and whould be utilized a whole lot more with a new OC. The same with HD (if he is willing to stay - yet again it comes down to which OC we hire, and if he will be involved). Decoud could be necessary to resign if we won't draft a new S or pick one up in FA.

In the draft, we need to go for as many OL as possible, plus a CB somewhere during those 7 rounds.

Then do what it takes to get Nicks or Grubbs, or anyone TD thinks will have the same impact on our OL.

My Offseason; NOT watching the Hawks.

Their Offseason; I just hope they keep Thomas DeCoud. Nobody celebrates 2nd and 2 run stops at the safety position like he does.
