Playoffs: Does Offense Or Defense Win Championships?

Recommended Posts

Weigh in on this ages old debate: would you rather be heading into the playoffs with

1.) a dominate D with a sputtering offense, or

2.) an explosive offense with a defense that couldn't stop a pop-warner squad?

Which wins championships?

Due to the rule changes a defense cant impose they will as they use to. Now you just want that explosive O with a D that cant get you some turnovers he and there.

Mostly it is teams with great offenses and opportunistic defenses that win championships these days.

Truth!

Take a look at this article. It explains why the Packers can dominate, and almost go undefeated even with a pretty bad defense.

The same things can be said for the other teams like the Pats and the Saints, who give up a ton of yards, but make up for it by forcing turnovers that give their offense better field position, while taking an opportunity for points away from their opponent.

It kind of gives a little bit of a blueprint for beating them as well, even though it is pretty obvious that committing turnovers will kill you. Not committing turnovers against them are obviously also easier said than done..

Sapp or Dukes said it best. The NFL rule changes favor the passing game to much now. D gives teams a chance to win but its the O that wins it for you.

This is so true. In the past it was defense that won you championships. Now you need an elite offense to win championships or a super elite defense like the Steelers or Ravens with a good ball control opportunistic offense.

Here's an interesting video I found on NFL.com about defenses and championships.

Balance wins championships.

In 2010 GB had a Top 10 defense and a Top 10 offense

In 2009 NO had an opportunistic defense and dominant offense

In 2008 PIT had the #1 defense and a balanced offense

In 2007 NYG had a top 10 defense and a balanced offense

In 2006 IND had the best playoff defense and a dominant offense

This year, the Patriots / Packers / Saints are like Arena League teams - dominant offenses and horrible defenses (all gave up over 4500 yards in the air). 49ers, Steelers and Ravens are very good defenses but don't have dominant offenses. We're a little bit more balanced, so it will be interesting to see how the playoffs play out.

Saints 21.2 ppg, Patriots 21.4 ppg, Packers 22.4 ppg defensively. Packers 35 ppg, Saints 34.2 ppg, Patriots 32.1 ppg offensively. All bottom 3 in the NFL for defensive passing yards. Like I said previously, all very similarly built teams.
