TeamPlayer1
That was in St. Louis. New Orleans is a completely different team at home.Really....it was a fluke game. The point is that Brees has time to let his receivers run their routes and that the vaunted Saints passing game is predicated on Brees having 3 to 4 seconds to get the ball out. That is only possible because they have a monster o-line who gives him time. Plus these 2 stud guards make big holes for the running game. There is a good possibility that the Falcons would win 14+ games each year if Ryan had 3 to 4 seconds every pass play even if our D stayed the same. Trouble
When asking DeCoud about his coverage he replied, "he just saved a bunch of money by calling geico."

TeamPlayer1
Uh, was that a mis- print, did you mean 3 to 4 minutes ??Well, yeah it did seem like Brees had 3 to 4 minutes. I think he called home to his wife on one 3rd down play.
deester11
I for one am outraged at all the hate spewed at BVG for his defense. I'll bet no one on this **** board can call up a soft zone like him. Stop the madness.
Club212
We can't look at previous past records, you are what you are, THIS SEASON we were supposed to build/progress on the past NOT REGRESS! Man for man I felt we are better on the Offense, esp. since benching Baker, I did not like the fact we lost Dahl (the mean SOB), I believe in keeping a line together as long as they are progressing. With the addition of JJ & a healthy (seldom thrown to) HD, plus JRod, I did expect more, it hasn't been all that bad except for the OL & penalties & the typical "drops". As for the Defense, I feel BVClueless should go back to college where they typically run the ball. He has NO PRESSURING of the QB. His 3rd downs whether 3rd & 1 or 3rd & long are unwatchable. I think the only stops are the errant thrown ball, drops, then the occasional thank God I crossed my fingers for a turnover. We upgraded (like getting rid of JA98 - Owens to bench) & Spoon emerging, but what about the rest of the D- line sans ABE? Regressing also, where the **** is Jerry? Special Teams is another disaster waiting to happen, if thats all we can come up with for an onsides a few weeks ago, forget about it. New rules hurt Weems KO returns, but others on the board feel Franks may be the man. Positioning is critical, we are one of the worst, a few weeks ago our avg. start was less than the 20 yd line, since I saw that stat, we haven't done too much better! PapaJoe
That's just revisionist history. In 2008, the Falcons beat 3 division winners, including two on the road, and last year, the Falcons beat the Saints, Ravens, and Packers. In 2009 the Falcons beat the Jets on the road, who went on to win two road playoff games and play in the AFC Championship games. Some people have this disease where they only remember games against good competition when the Falcons lose.I guess people only2008 - 11-5: our schedule was weak; we beat NO, MINN, SD (good 3) lost to Phila and NO (good 2), then lost to ARIZ in playoffs. Result 3-3 against Good teams.2009 - 9-7: lost to NO x2, NEngl (16 pts), Phila (blowout), NYG, and Dallas (16 pts).Beat Jets (with rookie QB Sanchez). Result 1-6 against Good teams.2010 - 13-3: beat NO, Balt, GB, and lost to PITT, NO (rematch), Phila, and ; then embarassed in playoffs rematch w GB. Result 3-4 against Good teams.2011 - 10-*6: beat marginally good teams TENN and Phila, beat DET, lost to GB, NO, HOU (with rookie 3rd QB), CHI (by 16 pts; was good before injury decimated), NO again (in a rematch Blowout embarassement).Result 3-5 against Good teams; and that's getting credit for TENN and Phila being "good" this season. There are other losses against teams that can't be considered good also, but those aren't even the debate. An objective review of those four seasons/teams do not paint the reality that our Falcons have performed well in big games against elite teams and elite/great QBs. jstammer
Which defense wrote the script for slowing down the Saints in New Orleans this year?Only the Giants (49) and Colts (62) allowed the Saints to score more points against them than we did. So, at best, we were 13th out of 15 in devising a defensive scheme to stop them. Not much to hang your hat on there. The point most are trying to make is that our scheme stunk from the moment they took possession of the ball, yet we never tried anything different. Were we expecting the Saints to stop running plays that took advantage of our scheme?
cyofish
It's not the scheme. The problem is that teams like the Saints and Green Bay knows exactly what we're going to do. In another words, our coaches are out-coached by their coaches. This was so evident in the first half against the Saints. Second thing is if we lack the personnel to make the scheme work, the coaches need to tweak the scheme to fit the players we do have. We can't just rush 3 - 4 guys on passing down if the DL has trouble pressuring the QB. BVG seems more resign to live and die with what he wants to do on defense. Nono
Never... its the worst in the league. Ive been saying it for four yearsHe lost me when he said "Dunta is a solid player"---my eyes don't lie fool---good players are good no matter what the F'ing D schemeFire BVG
d#d#d#
I understand the scheme...The offense snaps the ball, our defense whiffs on sacks and tackles and specializes in blown coverages on 3rd and long. Its called the bend and then break defense... tobyd77
One thing about this cover 2 tampa2 scheme what ever you would like to call it is you have to be good at it and Chicago and Indy are.I've never seen guys that can anticipate routes as well as these two teams have. And what you forgot to mention about this scheme is that it takes great film study and anticipation of routes from your opponents on their route which in turn allows you to be aggressive to jump the route and we are not aggressive enough up front to do that in the secondary. When we played Indy they were jumping routes like crazy on Matt which did result in a pick six.Matt should have been picked at least about 4 other times that game but the picks kept getting dropped.Grimes is great at anticipating what his opponent is doing and More is also coming around nicely. We struggle with Robinson an decoud but I'm seeing something in Robinson that leads me to believe that he deserves another year at it but Decoud has had time to grow and has shown that he is having trouble diagnosing the play and in result blows the coverage. You have to have great film study skills to make this scheme work. They brought Hayden in from indy to help but he as we see is just too injury prone no surprise there. The best i'veseen the Falcons come close to being successful in this scheme was when they played greenbay earlier in the fifth game. They held Rogers without a Td in the first half to just scoring 6 points. They would sit on those routes and just swat the mess out of them.Even the commentators were saying how the Falcons were not repsecting GB offense from how they were just sitting on those route and diagnosing what rogers and his guys were doing.I haven't seen that good of play on another elite QB since provided Aaron did finally break some big plays on us. We are still missing something and there will be changes made starting with the coaches.
papachaz
@OP, wait, you're actually trying to convince me that we even HAVE a defensive scheme? let me try to wrap my head around that a few minutes and i'll get back to you.ok, having now gotten past the title of your post, i have to admit, like a few others have already stated, i had to quit reading when you said DeCoud was solid in coverage. you lost what sliver of credibility you might have had right there. sorry
