How Many Of You Guys Actually Understand The Defense Scheme Were Trying To Run?

Imho contrary to popular belief it's not so much the scheme as it is the philosophy. Its the ultra conservative game plan we run that really hand cuffs the coordinators. Being a UGA fan I remember BVG being a lot more aggressive with his scheme. MM was also more inventive and agressive in Pittsburgh. However we rarely see any of that here and it's because Smitty is so intent on sticking to his conservative approach. It's also why we never make in game adjustments. No risks no reward.

from a preivous thread about this defense

i dnt get it, throw the zone out the window, lets play bump n run single high weather we blitz or not, at least we wnt have guys running wide open from playing this pathetic zone conepts... seriously this is wat i would do after i see us getting drug up and down the field after two possesions..

''alright guys were going to man up cause zone isnt working, dunta grimes franks yall will man up and bump them at the LOS.. were going to take the middle of the field away, if jgrham is split out wide, then i want moore on him with spoon doubling. if sproles is lined up on the same side as grahm then we single graham with you moore and spoon you go get sproles... lofton, i want you zoned out inbetween the hashes, you dnt allow anything caught over the middlle, corners you DO NOT allow any inside release at all... make brees throw to the outside of the numbers to dunta and grimes...

if graham is not split out and in inline bliocking then i want decoud to come in the box man up on the RB and i want moore playing single high to let him roam... spoon, i want you man up on graham and make sure if he release from his inline stance to make sure he doenst get a clean one.. we force everything to the outside we will be fine'' lofton you stay partolling the intermediate middel, while we have one safety over the top in the middle, to force long throws to our most athletic guys on defense...

if we still cnt get a pass rush then we will send 6 guys, moore come off the edge on strong side, spoon you come off on the weak side, again, bump and dnt allow any inside release, lofton continue to zone off inbetween the hases and decoud you stay high... play agressive and FORCE them into a mistake...<p class="ipsLikeBar right clearfix" id="rep_post_6550826">

I swear that Van Goofball has come up with the Falcons' version of the "Prevent Defense". Instead of

just giving up points during the 2-minute drill, they give up scoring drives and points ALL game long.

At least now we can see why Ishy went for it on 4th down during the OT game at our place. He was as shocked as the rest of us that this defense stopped the Saints the first time they had the ball in OT, and knew the odds of ever doing it again were quite slim.

It happened 9 times in that game.

"Geee, I'm trying to drive my car across a lake and every time I do, it fills with water and sinks. Why do people laugh at me and complain? They should try to understand what it is that I am trying to do, instead of complaining that it cannot be done. Just wait, some day I'll have the right pontoons on my car and I'll finally make it across the lake."

Brian Van Goofball

The attention he gets...I want to do a poll on the best things mentioned about BVG, Van Goofball, Van Clueless, the tee shirt with the "slash" thru it, my pick.....they guy with the bad porno style mustash!

From the comments in this thread, you'd think the Falcons were near the bottom in the league in defense every year BVG has been here. I am wondering how in the world we managed to win 42 games since the guy has been here reading all these comments.

so just because weve won regular season games we should be content and over look the GLARING problems we have?

yes weve done well in the regular season in 4 years but thats not enough. some of us want to see a championship or atleast some competitive postseason play. we will NOT have either with defense the way it is.

Easy we've feasted on bad teams and except against the saints and packers we've dominated at home. Real easy to get 42 wins that way but hard to get respect when you consistently lose to winning teams.

For the record though I believe BVGs defense is good enough as is MMs offense, however the ultra-conservative approach by the HC needs to go. It is extremely outdated and if continually employed will cost MS his job.

Hahahahaha thats what i keep telling myself also BVG has done such a terrible job but the team keeps winning our sack total is 31 for the year but the team keeps winning while we have had our clocks cleaned by the Bears and now NO we are by far from the anywhere near the worst D in the league hahahahahaha I just have a good laugh at some or the thread replies over the last 3 days.

There isn't a player or coach in the NFL that would tell you that it is easy to get 42 wins in 4 seasons in the NFL. Not one.

I'm waiting for some moron to respond that the regular season isn't as important as the post season some moron will come up with something along those lines ssaying the regular season doesn't amount to anything...I mean those 42 games we have won dictate home field play-off seeding and such things there not important hahahahaha/sarcasm..

No doubt... but without better lines, we have came as far as we can. Great teams prepare for us, understand what we do and try to do and what they know for a fact we cant do (like pressure a qb).

Now i take nothing away from what they have accomplished. But if the players bought into this... then its the coachs failing to make adjustments to teams. They might be pulling pressure to stop the run or stop screens. But what ever it is, its broke when abe is our last hope and has been.

BRING BACK GRAVY JACKSON!!!!!

I understand when we where in the West we faced Jerry Rice and company and we had Jerry Glandville and we would send the house if we couldn't get pressure. Man up and go for it.

Its to late in the game for a drastic change. But no excuse why we cant mix and match packages.

The saints are calling audibles to counter ours. WTF is that. Thats like supermans kryptonite. Thats creative, thats coaching, thats planning.

Their players where 1 person tackling and launching. Thats heart, thats passion, thats desire to win and thats coaching.

They were getting pressure at key moments, they blew up our 4th down attempts. Thats just flat out depressing!!!!

reg season games arent meaningless if they amount to a sb win.

if you arent the last one standing then every other win beforehand can be seen as a moral victory IMO.

i guess its a character flaw of mine that i mostly deal in absolutes. in this case, your either a super bowl winner or youre not. nothing else matters.

to use 42 wins as justification for keeping this staff is silly because there has to be a point where winning regular season games and playoff appearances(not wins) isnt enough.

edit: you mention things such as seeding and playoff positioning. again, those things dont matter if youre bounced in the 1st game you play. Ex: 2010 atlanta falcons. yea those 13 wins and #1 seed meant a helluva lot in january. we were OUTPLAYED and OUTCOACHED. you can point to the fact we lost to the sb champs, but had the homefield advantage. that shouldve made a difference, right?

which brings me back to my original point. from what ive seen these 4 years, this staff isnt capable of taking us to the promise land. if im wrong, and i sure as **** hope i am, ill be the first to admit it.
