since68andcounting
This is a serious question, not a joke. Smitty is known as a fiery competitor. We saw him defend our own sideline once, many times we've seen him red faced going after the refs, or even our own players (who certainly deserved it last night). His first year I saw him through binocs dressing down Brent Grimes ferociously for lining up offside on a crucial 3rd down. Grimes rode the pine the rest of the season. We saw none of this last night. In fact, we've seen a curiously "level", almost emotionless Smitty the last few weeks. I was jumping out of my seat last night when the ref picked up that flag on what should have been a safety. But from the Falcon bench....nothing.I mentioned this to my wife and she brought up the very perceptive observation that Smitty could be heavily medicated due to his recent heart pain "scare". The Falcons have been curiously mum on that subject. And we all know what these meds can do. You give someone enough Zanex and they could walk into a war zone like it's their own living room.Is it possible Smitty refused a necessary surgery until post-season because of the down time and disruption? But as a precaution the doctor insisted on meds to prevent elevated mood swings? This is all speculative, but it makes logical sense. This is NOT the Smitty I recall watching the last 3 years. Blitz28179
You might be onto something. Its like coach smith isnt the same guy anymore.Hope he didnt let this coaching job and recent sucess go to his head.
Guest JoeSr
I do not know if Smith is on meds, but he may be keeping it easy like Reeves did when he had some suspicious heart activity.
Daddy's Home
1) I never saw him "defend our sidelines".2) I just think he realizes his act is getting old. He's stopped throwing headphones and hissy fits on the sidelines but he still has that smug look on his face when we play the likes of Jacksonville and Co. Didn't see it last night tho. Honestly? I don't know if that is a sign of improvement or panic.
jlrfalcon
Seriously - what doctor would allow a head coach engage in such a hyper activity? He also got medical attention so quick the other night that this heart problem has had to have been long-term.This might also explain why he does seem to baby the players these days - lets them skip practices frequently, never sits them for a quarter/half/game after a stupid play (Roddy-drops, Dunta-missed tackles, Baker-easy sacks)
RHEC
Ever since that heart problem, he has been taking it easy lately so hes probably keeping it cool until next season. You just don't mess with chest pains.

FalconJim
Personally, I don't think so.....at least, not anything "mind-altering". But really, it's none of our business. I will agree, however, that he seems to have lost some his "spunk". Who knows, maybe the doctors told him to tone it down, and just coach. That may be a good thing, too.....you think better, when you're calm. Maybe he could take a lesson from "Matty Ice"...
Dr_truth189
I mean if it is that serious he may step down at the end of the season.
Snowen
I dunno what happened to Smith from year 2 to 3, but lately hes just a horrible head coach. He used to actually be pissed when we lost a game, to the point where he even benched BVG from calling plays for a whole game, and showd him how it is done (the one game our D was completely awesome) - Now he just doesnt seem to give a $%$^, every loss is "I didnt expect this to happen" and not preparing in the week. He needs to go.I really think we need to fire the whole staff and TD can start over getting the coach HE wants. I trust TD, he knows how to win, and hes given Smith every single player at every position needed to win a superbowl, and Smith is just not good enough to do it.Maybe its because its only his 4th year as a head coach, or maybe its because hes a good DC but horrible head coach.. Point is, Smith needs to be fired. Edited December 28, 2011 by Snowen

This is NOT the Smitty I recall watching the last 3 years.I think Smitty has been directed from above not to have any of the emotional outbursts we saw early on in his career. It doesn't "look good" on the organization if we get emotional about football. Used to be, if we were getting screwed by officiating, he would let the refs know it. If something happened on the field, he would get fired up and protect our players. Now for the past year & a half, maybe a little longer, he's been acting like he's been studying under Phil Jackson and he's all zen now.
