The No Holding Penalty Because It Was A Screen Pass Explanation.

Recommended Posts

I'm not remotely suggesting that this play or the refs cost us the game. I just don't understand it. I think Triplett's explanation was that "there is no penalty for holding as it was a screen pass and the blocker was trying to shed his block".

OK.

The replay looked like holding to me, so does that mean that you can do that on a screen pass?

I'm not even going to point out the replay showed that there was no screen pass. Is it possible that Brees was flushed out of the pocket and couldn't throw it - I guess.

Anyway, it's a small bytch - does anyone have a plausible explanation cause I'm not buying the one Triplett gave.

There was a play a few years back where Greg Ellis was being bear hugged from behind a flag was thrown but eventually picked up with the explanation that it wasn't holding because Ellis fought out of the linemans grip. Not the exact words but it's always stuck with me. The same goes for defenseless receiver penalties.

Wow, just wow.

So they didn't call it holding because Ellis was able to break the holding? LMAO

First off, Brees is amazing, great game for you guys, and like the previous poster, not going to blame the loss on the officiating. But how is the hit on Kelly not called hitting a defenseless player like the one that they called on Lofton a series earlier?

Refs make mistakes in every game not a big deal. Besides that was third down which meant Breesus could get the ball again.

I think it's because Lofton's hit was near the Saints receiver's head, while the hit on Kelly was right in the small of his back. Same thing on the hit to Roddy in the 3rd quarter - right on the hip. They were all clean, hard hits as far as I'm concerned.

The NFL has screwed up this 'defenseless receiver' rule - at least once a game you hear announcers wonder 'what was wrong with that hit?"

Lofton hit him the high back.

Jenkins hit him on the butt.

Yes, the refs didn't cost us the game, but...

I was very surprised that the announcing crew pointed out multiple times questionable calls. I think it was after the no flag on the encroachment they finally got the memo that these things are not supposed to be discussed.

Yeah I forgot about that one, I was like wow am I really watching this.

I didn't understand the no-call on holding when Brees ran it out, either.. I'd like an explanation for that one. Even as a Saints fan, I thought that should have been a holding call.

As for the hit on Colston that drew a flag on you guys.. it was helmet to helmet, and the league has been pretty clear that they won't tollerate it this season. There have been many calls AGAINST US for the same exact thing. I've seen hits that looked legal, that our defenders made. But, they touched helmets and the refs called it. It is what it is.

Jenkins used his shoulder when he tackled, which is why he wasn't flagged, I think. It was a viscious hit, but it wasn't helmet to helmet, and he didn't go flying through the air to spear him. He just put a good shoulder into the guy's back. It probably COULD have drawn a penalty for spearing, and trust me, I've seen less intense hits called on us ALL season long.

I don't think the Saints defender was offsides. He moved, but his hand was right at the line of scrimmage. Just because a defensive player jumps/moves, doesn't automatically mean he's "offsides". He has to cross the LOS when the ball is snapped to be considered offsides. From the replay, it looks like he wasn't over the line.

Look, I hate the refs as much as you guys.. But, the fact is, we've been shafted all season as well. I know you guys don't watch all of our games, and we don't watch all of yours.. but, if you think that it's just you guys, you're wrong. Last week, we had a call against Roman Harper for a PF, when he didn't even TOUCH the opposing team's QB. He missed on a tackle, and was called for roughing.. So, I know how aggravating it can be. Some of these games, all I could do was laugh, because it got to the point where it was just silly. Luckily, our team is good enough to overcome this stuff, even when we have to play the opposing team AND the refs.

If you want to cry then I guess youd like to know that the Cowboys are one of the most penalized teams in the league and their opponents have the lowest penalties against this year. So cry me a freaking river if you think youve been shafted in a game, weve been shafted all year.

Honestly I want the officiating as a whole to improve. I see terrible officiating in almost every game of every week. These guys need to be under 50. In shape. 20/20 vision and it needs to be a year round job.

Are you replying to my OP or to a specific quote or Falcons fans in this thread in general? Because my OP was the farthest thing from crying as you're gonna get. I've been watching the NFL since 1975 and that's the first time ever I've heard that holding is not holding because it was a screen pass.

Pray you don't get the same call this Sunday at a crucial moment.

That wasnt aimed at you, I remember that call and I was miffed by it. Ive never heard of such a thing. I was talking about anyone that wants to say they got shafted, they need to go look up the penalties for and against this year. Dallas would be in last place in that catagory. People always attack Dallas for not being successful, well, if you look, every year we have more calls against us and around the least called against our opponents. Thats not crying, thats just facts.

Fair enough - as a sports fan I hope the reffing isn't an issue in your game.

This will continue to be a problem until penalties are made reviewable.. or they start using cameras and added refs to watch. There's no way a handful of refs can watch EVERY player all the time. We, as fans, have the benefit of replay, and a much better view from up/above, so we see everything.

Not having fat senior citizens as refs would help too.
