Protection - The Difference In The Game

Drew Brees routinely had 5 + seconds to get rid of the ball. He would drop back, scan the field on 3rd and long, and hit someone 30 yards down the field.

Conversely, Ryan had little protection. Most glaringly, I'm thinking of the 3rd down play where they only sent three and still got to Matt before he could throw a quick out. Just sad.

Yes, the officiating was terrible and destroyed our momentum. And yes, we couldn't stop their run game. But at the end of the day, it was yet again our inability to get pressure in 3rd down situations, and our inability to protect in 3rd down situations, that decided the game.

What was down and distance on that one conversion? 3rd and 20 or something, where Brees converted for a first or close to it?

That right there, was BS. No pressure, bad tacking and right behind Dunta Robinson. When's the staff going to stop trying to force the guy to play zone?

Our defensive scheme yesterday for me was the problem the sit back and hope our front 4 get pressure was an epic fail.I thought we needed to blitz heavy get the ball out of Brees's hands and use our speed and take our chances, unfortunately our D-line got man handled and were caught off balance all night hence the terrible hiding we took.

I thought the difference was Brees' ability to move around in the pocket and throw darts. The Falcons had him several times but he just stepped up avoided the sack and made big throws.

That was also due to no pressure from the DTs. Babs and Peters and whoever they decided to rotate had no effect getting in Brees' face for the majority of the game.

And then they allowed the Saints run game to get going. It was over when I saw that.

There were absolutely a couple times that Brees used mobility to avoid the rush, partly because of the lack of DT pressure as Statick noted. More times than that though, there was simply no pressure.
