Technically if the Eagles beat the Falcons, it shouldn't be that revealing because they do it so often over the years. But a victory will help reassure all of us in Philadelphia that we can beat a potential contender, and that this potential contender is still not on our level.

Eagles seek to have their way with Falcons once again: Fan preview

The Philadelphia Eagles have their first big showdown of the season coming against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 18. Not only is it a prime time battle on the road and Michael Vick's return to Atlanta, it is the first chance for the Eagles to show us fans that they can beat a contender. But if past history is any indication, the Falcons won't stand a chance.

The Eagles and Falcons have a lot of recent history together, and not just because of their shared history with Vick. They have faced off in two playoff games and one NFC championship game in the last decade, and are about to meet in the regular season for the third straight year. Yet if Philadelphia and Atlanta are in a rivalry, it is a fairly one-sided one in favor of the Birds.

When Vick took the Falcons to Philadelphia in the playoffs, he was batted around in the divisional round in 2003 and in the NFC title game of 2005. Since the Eagles' only NFC championship in the Andy Reid era came at the Falcons' expense, it was enough to link the two together forever. But even that was overshadowed when Vick came from Atlanta to prison to Philadelphia.

Since then, the Falcons have had even worse luck facing the Eagles although they haven't dealt much with Vick. Philadelphia became one of the only teams to defeat Matt Ryan at the Georgia Dome in 2009, as Vick had a cameo in a 34-7 slaughter. Then in 2010 the Eagles didn't need Vick to crush the Falcons again in Lincoln Financial Field, as Kevin Kolb lit them up by 31-17.

That win came right before Atlanta got on a tear and racked up the best record in the NFC, but it would have loomed large if the Falcons faced the Eagles in the playoffs again. Now Philadelphia is visiting the Georgia Dome again much earlier this season, as it seeks a 2-0 start against a team it has had its way with over the years. What's more, Atlanta is coming off a humiliating road loss to the Chicago Bears on Sept. 11 and can't afford to have a 0-2 start.

The Eagles made all of their big moves this offseason in order to get over the hump that the Green Bay Packers created for them last year. The Falcons are hoping to avenge losing to the Packers in the playoffs last season as well, but if they still can't beat the Eagles after all these years, it won't help their cause. Both Vick and Ryan had their chances against Philadelphia and lost badly, with Ryan now taking his next shot against a Birds team that is supposed to be even better- if only because the hype demands it.

Technically if the Eagles beat the Falcons, it shouldn't be that revealing because they do it so often over the years. But a victory will help reassure all of us in Philadelphia that we can beat a potential contender, and that this potential contender is still not on our level.

Too bad Ryan didn't actually play in that game... it was Chris Redman.

I love how people don't need to actually fact check anything anymore.

Yahoo! Sports is populated with hack pseudo-journalists like Chris Chase and other forgettable twits. Definitely not the place you want to get factual, objective sports info.

I'm probably going to regret this, but...what is the purpose of you coming here. How do you get joy out of this?

I thought we were discussing how good the falcons are or are going to be. Im just trying to see what you guys are seeing in this explosive offense and dominating defense. How do you guys get joy out of what you are saying ?
