Spoon And Edwards...

I am re-watching the Bears game...and 2 players are sticking out to me.

Spoon and Edwards......and not for good reasons.

On Forte's screen TD, Edwards was jogging after a very catchable Forte, and on MANY plays Spoon is just jogging after guys he potentially has a shot at.

Not to mention the myriad of other disappointing plays from Spoon...completely whiffed on that Forte screen pass, and was washed out of a play due his poor decision making on the off left tackle long Forte run.

Very, very disappointing...especially when I see guys like Nich and a defensive tackle 55 yards down the field trying to tackle Hester.

It still irks me that we spent a 1st round pick on a non rush LB. Only a 2 to 3 43 linebackers in the NFL are worthy of a mid 1st round pick.

Mr. Fantastic, excellent post. If we were going to get a LB in the first round, we may as well have gone after Matthews, even though people were saying he is more of a 34 LB. Matt Ryan and either a DE or WR instead of Baker in 2008; Matthews instead of Jerry in 2009 (although I like him and believe he'll pan out, just not worth a 1st round pick though), and that pick on Weatherspoon for something else in 2010. Also, if the WR we could have drafted in 2008 panned out, we wouldn't have had to do what we did in this draft.

Clay isn't more of a 34 rush LB. He IS a 34 rush LB. All he has ever done since HS is rush the QB. And Spoon had a good game. A very good game

I just watched the entire game...he, overall, was awful.

I give him credit for his early TFL, and the pass breakup in the last few minutes of the game. Other than that, he was out of position, and showed pizz poor effort in pursuit and tackling.

If you watched the game you would notice Weatherspoon out of position plenty of times in coverage. Looking at his stats you would think he had a great game but he got a TFL at the beginning of the game, and a PD at the end. in between you would see him making tackles 7 yards down the field and allowing receptions on 3rd down in his area.

He was taking off plays at times like the WR Screen to Hester he just jogged after him and let him cut up field. Finally the non tackle he had on Forte on the screen that started the ball rolling for Chicago, total bonehead move.

I'm unimpressed and I'm starting to think some are just looking at stat sheets instead of what's going on the field.

Unless you have the coaches tape, it's virtually impossible to evaluate their true performance.

It's true that TD could've drafted much better. It should've been like this...

2008

Antonie Cason instead of Sam Baker

2009

Clay Matthews instead of Peria Jerry

Darell Scott instead of Chris Owens

2010

Dez Bryant instead of Sean Weatherspoon

2011

Akeem Ayers, Marcus Gilbert instead of Julio Jones

Luke Stocker instead of Akeem Dent

And the Chargers wouldn't have taken Ryan Leaf. Come on hindsight is 20/20.

Lol I can tell you his depth in a cover two. I won't spoil the quiz though.

But they were solid outside of the screens. They are better on first and second down and in the red zone when the field is shortened. The zone isn't bad. They just had a bad game. Look at the preseason. They were tough. Even the Saints game they were tough. When they have a swagger, they are a really good unit. But if they are behind the 8-ball, they struggle and need some help from the offense.

Everybody feeds off the offense. The offense, the defense, special teams, and the fans. If we score, the fans lose their minds and the defense feeds off of that and plays better. They can keep the offense in the game on the road but not all game like the Ravens and Steelers and Bears but they showed it last year and Sunday that, if on the road and the offense is sputtering, they can keep the game manageable. That's all I ask. You guys want to see 0 points and 0 yards. That's not going to happen. They will give up yards. But if they cut down on the missed tackles, the screens don't happen and they keep holding like they were all game. I am ok with the defense and when they settle down and add Hayden and Sanders, they will be a very good unit. May not be elite, but will be very good. Matt has to relax too. He is an outstanding QB and should play like it.

Did your DVR not record anything before Spoon didn't wrap up Forte because he was all over every play before that. He was in the back field making solid tackles left and right. I haven't watched the whole thing yet but I am shocked you came away with that while ignoring the beginning part.

I addressed his highlights later in this thread.

He made 4 tackles out of the first 8 plays for a net of -4 yards. He started out pretty well. He still looks horrible/confused in coverage. He led the team in tackles also so I wouldn't say he was the worst one on the team Sunday.
