Ryan starts out as bad as he finished last season

By Jeff Schultz

CHICAGO -- The Falcons didn’t lose Sunday’s season opener against Chicago solely because Matt Ryan played poorly, any more than they lost a playoff game to Green Bay last January solely because Ryan was a turnover machine.

But doesn’t it always start with the quarterback in football?

The Falcons’ 48-21 playoff loss to the Packers in the Georgia Dome was punctuated by Ryan’s three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble), including a pivotal 70-yard interception return by Tramon Williams just before halftime. Their equally ugly 30-12 loss to the Chicago Bears to open the season Sunday included two more turnovers by Ryan, an interception and a fumble that both led to touchdowns.

The fact Ryan completed 31 of 47 passes for 319 yards was mere window dressing. He made the bad plays that made a difference, not the good ones. He did not throw a touchdown pass.

“When you turn the football over three times against a good football team, you can’t expect different results,” Ryan said.

When asked why the Falcons’ expected explosive offense was anything but, Ryan credited the Bears’ defense rather than attack the Falcons’ game plan.

“Chicago did a good job of keeping things in front of them,” he said. “The nature of the Tampa-2 [scheme] is to keep everything cradled in front of them. We had opportunities today to look down field. We had plays called, aggressively trying to get the ball down the field. But they executed their game plan really well. They stayed deep and forced us to check down to our running backs.”

The game was tied 3-3 in the first quarter and the Falcons were driving from the Chicago 35 when Ryan rolled right and spotted Tony Gonzalez. Problem is that Brian Urlacher was hovering between the quarterback and the tight end and Ryan threw the pass anyway. Urlacher picked it off.

Ryan initially credited the Bears’ linebacker for getting “good extension,” but he quickly added: “I probably shouldn’t have thrown it there. I definitely shouldn’t have thrown it there. That’s one of those situations where you have to throw the football away when there’s somebody in your face. Just a poor decision.”

The Bears drove to a touchdown on their ensuing possession to take a 10-3 lead.

In the third quarter, Ryan was scrambling away from Julius Peppers when he stumbled and dropped the ball. This time, Urlacher picked it up and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown, giving Chicago a lid-slamming 30-6 lead.

Ryan: “I didn’t do a good job protecting the football there.”

Falcons coach Mike Smith declined to comment on the play of “specific players” until after he evaluated game film. But some things probably don’t need heavy analysis. Ryan has three interceptions, two lost fumbles and only one touchdown pass in his last two starts.

Success and failure in the NFL usually starts with the quarterback.

Ryan gets a large portion of the blame.

But my God, the Green Bay game: They never punted! Our D looks like dookie, just like last year (minus a select few players; Grimes/Lofton/Abe).

Our defense looks like 11 Probowlers out there on 1st and 2nd down. Then on 3rd down they turn into the keystone cops and it drives me insane.

If there was no such thing as the forward pass our defense would be the sh!t.

But when Vick was here, it was always his fault, and he never had the line that Ryan has now.

The "line that Ryan has now" dayum near got him killed today......

I wouldn't be crowing about how good the Falcon O-line is right now.

So you are saying this line is good?

It's supposed to be better than the Bears line, So what Falcondae and others have been saying all week so what's the excuse?

Cutler had pressure in his face as well yet didn't look as bad as Ryan did with better players around him. And Ryan is supposed to be better than Cutler as well.

So the question is whether people on this board over hype the talent level of this offense or that Ryan isn't as good as advertised. So which one is it?

How bout the fact that they were able to pressure us while only rushing 4 players and dropping 7. The receivers could not get open because the Oline could not block or if they were open Ryan could not find them because he was on his ***.

The fact is Cutler frequently had receivers who were so open that you didn't see a Falcon player on the screen when the receivers caught the ball. Ryan had people draped all over him as did our receivers. Ryan didn't pay particularly well, but the o line and the majority of the defense stunk it up really bad.

And thats what I have been trying to say. When did you see people get open and have easy completions. Everything for the Falcons offensively was a GRIND. No one was open. We really only run 3 routes, we never run crossing routes, deep in routes. WE ARE SIMPLISTIC.

The thing about Cutler is that when he had pressure he is athletic enough to move around unlike Ryan. the one time Ryan tried to extend a play he dropped the friggin ball on the ground!!! I don't want to here anything about our line when supposedly Chicago had a worse line. Or is it that we still don't have a pass rush even with Edwards? Think about that for a moment.

Ryan can't make things happen on his own so if players are covered and he gets pressured it's a wrap. That's why players like Brees and Rodgers are way better than him.

Are you stupid. Thats because offensive game planning, play calling and route combinations. That plays a part. Yeah he fumbled on that play, the man was under duress all game.

Difference between Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan is that Jay Cutler doesn't mind throwing into coverage and having it get picked off

The thing that get's him in trouble is his fearlessness in the passing game. He believes he can make any throw no matter what coverage he has out there. Ryan is to docile to play with aggressiveness like that. You can tell with his personality he's not built like that.

So if he throws 5 picks trying to push the ball down the field, will you be happy?

You can keep making excuses but Cutler had as much pressure as Ryan and he wasn't playing scared. The play at the end of the half should tell you all you needed to know with Ryan. We are around the 50 in Hail Mary position and what does he do? Throws to fricking Snelling for 9 yards!!!

Dude plays scared to throw an interception simple as that.

Depends on the situation. If he threw interceptions today while we were getting handled trying to go down field and get a touchdown I can understand but he didn't even try to make any plays.

Stafford on 4th and 3 through in deep to Johnson and scored a touchdown. That's what I want to see from him instead of dumpoffs when we are losing.
