I'm curious to know how much he got and what TD told him. My guess is he was looking for a starting job and possibly could have gotten it somewhere, but he signed with the Falcons for one year without even talking to another team. I saw this on his twitter account. JamesSanders36 James Sanders

Any teams out there need a starting safety!!!??

I can't imagine he would sign with us so quickly if he got a small amount of money and was pretty sure he would not be starting. I'm also surprised he went with the first team that offered him a one year contract. You would think he would give it a day or two to see what else was out there, especially if he wasn't going to be starting.

I do think playing for the Falcons has become a very good thing in most players minds. Also, he is obviously familiar with TD so I'm sure that helped. I still would expect him to look around for a couple of days.

Bottom line is TD got his man and we needed some safety help very badly so it's a good signing.

I dunno. I don't think DeCoud is a great safety by any means, so I won't be surprised or angry if Sanders starts. Of course Sanders must prove he is capable of taking his spot first.

FYI heres how Madden 12 rates him:

POS OVR SPD ACC STR AGL AWR TKL JMP INJ STA TGH BSR PUR PRC MAN ZCV HPR PRS

FS 79 78 84 72 79 82 78 77 82 87 87 72 85 80 50 74 85 45

Yes I know Madden is fake but I've always liked to check it to get a feel of what kind of player he is.

Former Patriots safety James Sanders and the Atlanta Falcons reached agreement tonight on a one-year deal.

This is going to go widely unnoticed and a lot of people won't care, but this is a huge signing for us.

James Sanders is actually a very good safety and was only cut in New England because they brought in other expensive vets and have some young guys they really like (Chung, Meriweather, Page).

Sanders is only 27 years old and started only 9 games last year, but had 58 tackles, 1 forced fumble, broke up 6 passes and intercepted 3 more, taking one back for a TD.

It was easily his best season as a pro and he started basically half of the games. At this very moment I'd actually say James Sanders is a better player than Thomas DeCoud, but DeCoud will remain the starter. If either one of our safeties gets hurt Sanders can start in his place as he is a hybrid safety (and you know we like our guys cross-trained). The main thing is for the playoffs. Aside from injury insurance, we can now play a very effective quarter defense (3 safeties) which will help us protect leads against the top passing teams in the NFL. With DeCoud, Moore, and Sanders -- all safeties who are good in run support -- roaming the secondary we should be able to limit WRs and TEs from making any big plays. This is an area we've struggled in majorly recently, and now we have a legitimate remedy.

I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be the best bang-for-our-buck signing of our season.

_____

EDIT: And if our coaching staff really likes Sanders through the season, we can choose to keep him for the next few years. Why is this important? DeCoud is a free agent next year.

DeCoud is going to want some serious starter money. We can make a rational choice:

A) Give DeCoud that big money, let Sanders walk, and have no other free agent money.

OR

B] Give Jermichael Finley the money DeCoud wants and bring back James Sanders.

DeCoud and no tight end vs. Sanders and Finley.....no brainer. We need to be fiscally responsible, and I know our front office is exactly that (evidenced by the Ray Edwards deal).

Sanders largely flew under the radar with NE. The Pats, for most of his career, had revolving personnel at safety (even the games Sanders started). I'd actually be curious to know how many snaps he played because of this. They also never played very aggressively with their safeties or allowed them to gamble too much. He'll fit in at Atlanta a lot better, and be able to showcase more of his talents. Not only did he produce a lot in the 9 games he started last year, but he also started every game he played in 2007 and 2008...and Belichick knows his stuff. Not to mention Sanders has championship experience and leadership. He is a lot better than people would think, and he's smart as heck. He was just never a household name. Was also offered more money to play elsewhere when he signed his 3-year extension with the NE.

I was really hoping the Saints would sign him...now we get to play against him. Joy.

It's nice to see a Saints fan that wants to come here and talk football. There aren't many. Please excuse the Falcons fans that talk trash in response to rational posts, it's bound to happen. Like Supes said, should be a very interesting season. And may the best team...err....the Falcons win. :D

Guest mashburn

I love this. I wish we could have signed him to a 4 year deal. Cause we may need him next year also. And this could bring in bush and franks more slowly and let them develop.

What's THIS?!? A classy post from a Saints fan?

Haha. Yup, but I'm a Cali Saints fan, so I never really had to literally live the brown-bag angst the local Saints fans had to deal with. One of my best friends is a diehard Falcons fan, so I've had to keep it civil enough ;)

I'm one of those "better competition makes for better football" kind of fans. I hate the Falcons twice a year when they play the Saints, or if they need to lose so we can make the playoffs. Other than that, I root for them to represent the NFC South. Rivalries are awesome, but only when both teams are good enough to make it memorable. And Saints/Falcons games the past few seasons have been some of most competitive in the league. It's only going to get better now that both teams are pretty much even.

Love Arthur Blank and have mad respect for him. It's a classy organization you got, and that makes it hard to be uncivil. The whole trashy Raiders/49ers rivalry makes me sick. There needs to more sportsmanship between rivals.

Some fans want to hate the players of their rivals. But when your rivals have class-act guys like Matt Ryan, it's hard to hate. I did hate DeAngelo Hall (so did a lot of Falcons fans), but he was scum. Cheered when my boy Adam Jennings whooped his arse in practice a few years back. Big fan of Jacquizz Rodgers. Love Coy Wire. Big fan of Brian Finneran. And Jessie Tuggle is one of my favorite players of all time. Oh, and can't forget the fact Saints and Falcons have the shared greatness that is Morten Andersen!

PS: And it helps that Sanders is from Fresno State and I live in Fresno...
