2011 NFL Preview: Peter King Predicts Falcons over Chargers in Super Bowl XLVI

Can senior NFL writer Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) correctly predict who plays in the Super Bowl for the second year in a row? King was on the money last year when he said the Packers and Steelers would reach football’s Promised Land. Now, after a four-week road trip through over 20 training camps, King predicts the Falcons will take down the Chargers, 24–20, in Super Bowl XLVI. This year’s NFL Preview also contains detailed scouting reports for every single team and a list of eight great matchups for every division.

The six regional covers for the Sept. 5 NFL Preview—on newsstands Wednesday—feature Jerod Mayo (Patriots), Calvin Pace (Jets), Curtis Lofton (Falcons), Lamarr Woodley (Steelers), Clay Matthews (Packers) and DeMarcus Ware (Cowboys). Below is the last time each team appeared on the cover and how many appearances they’ve had overall:

Falcons: Sept. 6, 2010 (NFL Preview, regional cover); seventh appearance

Patriots: Jan. 24, 2011 (divisional playoff loss to the Jets); 25th appearance

Jets: Jan. 24, 2011 (divisional playoff win over the Patriots); 22nd appearance

Steelers: Jan. 30, 2011 (AFC championship game win over the Jets); 39th appearance

Packers: Feb. 14, 2011 (Super Bowl XLV win over the Steelers); 36th appearance

Cowboys: July 26, 2010 (Miles Austin/training camp); 48th appearance

At least he has more confidence than your fan base has had recently. Needless to say, I disagree but what's that worth around here anyway.

I couldn't ask for a better playoff run then Knocking out the packers and then the saints to go to the super bowl

and the Eagles only thing I see happening differently is we win the division and have home games not a wild card. Saints get the wild card and they don't make the championship game they lose in the first round

I'm not going to be a hypocrite on this. I don't really care for Peter King or his takes on anything NFL-related.....so I'm not going to change my mind just because of this prediction.

I mean, it's nice and everything but for me I would attach more significance to it if it came from an analyst I respect like Mayock.

Yea, most here have trashed King in the past so it'll be interesting to see if our MB brethren suddenly jump on board.

I think he's a good writer, but I don't necessarily think he knows what he's talking about regarding football if that makes sense.

Kind of cool that Lofton gets the cover though, I might have to get someone to send me a copy since I'm sure they won't sell those issues up here.

That's a much more eloquent way to put it that I ever could slam....and I agree totally. I do think King is a good writer....I just don't trust his actual knowledge of the game. He's almost like an "Entertainment Tonight" style writer for the NFL.

In this case, I actually find it more significant. The fact that Peter King has never been a vocal supporter of the Falcons - and in fact, has been hypercritical of our players and our team in general makes this prediction even more significant than that of Mayock.

Regardless of how we may feel about the reporter - this means that he saw something he obviously has not seen from our team in the past. This is a 180º turnaround in his opinion of the Falcons.

While it means nothing in the actual outcome of the season any more than any other prediction - it is significant in the fact that he predicted it.

I can see your side to it Tandy but for me I attach no special significance to King's prediction. He rode that "Panthers win Superbowl Train" for several years....to the point where he actually looked foolish.

About the 180 turnaround.....if I respected or valued King's football knowledge it might carry more weight with me. It doesn't. King doesn't impress me as the type of NFL writer who is breaking down film from Monday to Thursday. He's too busy talking about his favorite cafe lattes.......

Predictions are worth less than the paper they are written on, by anyone - but the idea of knocking off teh Packers and saints in their place on the way to winning the super bowl? that dream only gets better if you make those home playoff games

as to Peter King, I do think he knows what he is talking about - he has good sources who make him educated - does it mean he is always right? of course not - has he gotten very bombastic as his "star" has risen? absolutely - but I have always read his column

I also think it is intereesting looking at his predictions for records - no 12 win team in the NFC - means he at least thinks there is no one dominant team in the conference

I kind of think he's jumping on the bandwagon before a lot of people do. Sure, we didn't have our best game in the playoffs but we were 13-3 and look to have improved with our offseason additions. We have more stability than I think we've ever had and we're relatively young in our key spots.

Like I said in another post, I think a lot of media is going to have us in the superbowl because they don't like to pick defending champs (Packers), and the other trendy choice is the Eagles, and off season winners rarely win, and with YKW as QB they could be a train wreck. That leaves us and the Aints.

The AFMB is NOT representative of the Falcons fan base crazy.
