Ray Edwards = Ed Hartwell?

In 2005, coming off a successful season, we signed Ed Hartwell from the Ravens thinking it would put our defense over the top.

In 2011, coming off a successful season, we signed Ray Edwards from the Vikings thinking it would put our defense over the top.

Both players came from dominant units (Ravens LB corps and Vikings defensive line) that made them look better than they were. Once getting a big contract, Ed Hartwell disappeared and played like garbage until he got injured and never did anything here.

Is Ray Edwards destined for the same fate?

Nope.

Ray Edwards got trucked by the o-linemen he faced. He did nothing to show he is any better than Jamaal F. Anderson much less a solid starter in the NFL.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he plays well, but the lessons of the past show that we might be in for disappointment.

Time will tell, but it seems to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay premature to even be making a thread like this........

So you are basing this thread on one play? Really? Do you really think that he was supposed to win every down and just be this unstoppable force? If that's the case, Roddy should have been cut/traded along with Tony G since they didn't have any catches the first two games.

Did you not see him help with the pressure for the Abe sack? How many times have you seen abe on the ground? I saw him getting up at least 3 times.... I'm glad you're not the judge of the talent we put on the field.

Thomas pulled the trigger on this one not McKay!!!! The two time executive of the year...... I hope you don't have kids because if they mess up one time they are screwed in your eyes.....

I hope I am wrong. If Edwards plays well this year I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I am just worried because the Falcons have been burned by these types of signings in the past.

I feel ya but we've also had some success. What about Abe or Turner? Even Robinson imo opinion has been solid (not great but solid)

And we got this guy relatively cheap with potentially Bierman and Cliff Matthews waiting just in case.

.....as have every other team in the NFL.....

recent acquisitions of Michael Turner, Tony Gonzales and Dunta Robinson have turned out to be far less than disastrous.

Good point. Abe and Turner were successful pickups. The difference is that they had shown they could be "star" players on their own (Turner filled in great when LT was injured).

Edwards (and Hartwell) have only had success on great units. Edwards had the help of the monster Williams DTs and Jared Allen. While we have Abe and Babs who are great players in their own right, Edwards will need to step it up a little more on our line.

 Ugh you quoted me before I could fix my brain fart. (Clay Matthews would be nice though)

I'm still not sure if there's any negatives here though. Those guys I mentioned were proven stars and are getting paid as a result. We didn't lock ourselves into an expensive contract and the alternative was to sign nobody and keep the same rotation from last year.

I think the thread starter may have a point, but Ray Edwards isn't my biggest concern. My concern is that Matt Ryan is hosting dog fighting events at his house. I know, this seems unlikely to many of you, but this has happened before. So it most likely will happen again! Dont you all understand how things work!

In fact, if we make it to a super bowl, I guarantee that Thomas Decoud will get arrested for mistaking an undercover cop as a prostitute...Bank on it!!!

Oh wait, just because something happened one time years ago DOESN'T mean it is going to happen again?!?!

My bad.
