Be careful with Amazon Game Credits

Recommended Posts

I took advantage of the $20 game credit deal for pre-ordering NCAA Football 12 and was planning on just rolling over that credit to Madden 12. Anyways, when I went to pre-order the Madden I found out they had already applied the $20 credit towards something that I have a subscription for (Purple Wraath) so I wasn't even given the option of when to use my credit since the subscriptions are automatically done. I still saved 20 so I am not complaining. I just know plenty of people will take the $20 credit and plan on rolling it over to a particular game. Just thought I would give a heads up.

It's your responsibility to manage how that credit is used. I dont know how subscriptions work but I know for sure that if you make a purchase you have to uncheck the box where your credit total is if you dont wanna use it. If not it will automatically assume that you want to use the free money towards your purchase.

He said it was automatically applied to a subscription he had, which i assume is billed automatically monthly. I wouldnt have thought of it either.

I know that but what he should have done was double checked it before the due date. He could have stopped it before it happened. It was just a learning thing. I assume he is new to the credit thing on Amazon and didn't understand how it gets used.

If the subscription is charged as if he purchased an item then yeah it will charge the credit automatically. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. It's just something you learn from.

I had it pre ordered with a $50 credit and had to cancel it and re-pre order it just to add my other $10 credit.

As my post said, it used my credit on something I am subscribed to. Since it is taken out automatically, there is nothing for me to check or uncheck.

Not only that, why didn't you go ahead and pre order Madden when the credit was first applied? Had you done that, you would have never had this issue in the first place.

Two reasons:

1) In case I found a better deal and decided to save it for something else.

2) I have had credits in the past and they have never been applied to my subscriptions until now.

I just checked my subscriptions to make sure and there is nowhere addressing using or not using store credits in them. You would assume wrong about being new to Amazon and there credit promotions. I have used them and the subscriptions for sometime and never had this happen before.

You are right about it being a learning experience. As my post indicated, I am not mad about the situation. I was just trying to let people know this could now happen if they have subscription services through Amazon.

I never said you were mad and I made it clear I wasn't trying to be rude. It probably never happened before because you didn't have any credit on the due date. Like I said, I don't know how subscriptions work. If it is paid as if you are purchasing an item then yes any available credit will be used if you don't catch it before it is paid. If you contact Amazon it's possible they will tell you the same thing. Maybe they wont. Give it a shot

I just went and played around with it. I had the Official XBOX Magazine in my cart. 12 months for $141. The part that says payment option had my store card info logged in BUT in the final price box my $2.58 credit was automatically applied. Therefore my assumption was correct about a subscription payment being treated as a regular purchased item. Again, you have full control over this. In the future, whenever you have any available credit that you dont want to be used to pay for the subscription, you should make sure you uncheck the box that says you have available credit. The only reason it wasn't there when you recently looked is because you have no credit.

Order Summary

Items: $141.82

Shipping & Handling: $0.00

Total Before Tax: $141.82

Estimated Tax To Be Collected: $0.00

Total: $141.82

Gift Certificate/Card: -$2.58

Order Total: $139.24

When I am referring to subscriptions I mean the subscribe and save program. They automatically send you more of a given item every month, two months, or how ever you set it up. They take payment out automatically that particular month. It's not a one time pay and done kinda of thing. I have had some subscriptions for years now and they have never used my game credits for them in the past. I probably needed to explain that better especially since you said you were not familiar with the subscription service. Thats my bad.

See with me, i double check all my bills that get paid automatically just to make sure there is no error. It's just something I have a habit of. This particular issue is just learning experience. Either way he got hooked up so I guess it's all good lol
