Reading the Defense: Edwards should prey on QBs in Atlanta

Adrian Peterson. Tom Brady. Larry Fitzgerald. Blah, blah. blah. Football is a team sport, right? Defense wins championships, right? After all, Charles Woodson meant just as much to the Packers as Aaron Rodgers last season. Why shouldn't he mean just as much to someone's fantasy roster?

For all of you bold owners out there who like a few IDPs flavoring your fantasy soup, we've got your back. Every week, we'll bring you news on notable defensive players to keep you informed. So without further ado, we bring you the inaugural edition of Reading the Defense.

Former Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards traded in his horns for wings and will make his Atlanta Falcons debut on Saturday against the Steelers. Edwards will see time with the first team -- which means trying to take down Ben Roethlisberger -- and should give coach Mike Smith a good opportunity to see what his new free agent prize can do. Smith recently told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Edwards won't be held to a snap count, but that coaches will be keeping a close eye on him.

The veteran from Purdue is just getting back on the field after knee surgery that derailed his offseason boxing career. On the gridiron, Edwards registered 16.5 sacks in the past two seasons along a stout front line in Minnesota and there's no reason to believe that he can't produce similar numbers now that he's landed with the Dirty Birds. Lining up across from John Abraham, the Falcons might have the most fearsome pair of bookends in the league. At least until the Giants get Osi Umenyiora back in the lineup.

This front reminds me of when we had kerney and ab as our starting DE's. Now that was a sight to see if you guys remember

IIRC Abe and Kerney didn't play together very much i the 1 year that they were both here, due to injuries. Didn't Abe get hurt in trashtime against the Panthers in week 1 after a great performance, and spend much of the rest of the year limited by injuries?

Let's hope that Abe and Edwards stay healthy.

they both did. abe missed half the season and kerney missed 7 games after never missing a game in his career.
