Man to Man coverage

Recommended Posts

Can someone please explain why our corners can't stay in man to man all the time vs playing in a zone and leaving holes in the coverage? I really don't understand why the safeties just cant help out in coverage on the passing plays while we play man to man with our corners. I just do not understand why the corners play off in zones. I saw the Texans corners on third and short against the Aints about 3-5yrds deep and when I watch the Falcons on 3rd and short we play 10-15yrds off the receiver and of course they throw a quick out to the receiver and they get the 1st down. why can't we do that?

In third and short we don't play off any more. That was back in 08. But we do still play off in 3rd and long situations when we send a heavy blitz so the DBs can read the play since it is going to be quick. Just look at the Bears and Giants. They don't run man all game but tighten up when they get in the red zone because the field is shorter and the passing windows shrink. Plus they have strong front fours. We can join that club this season with Edwards and Jerry.

Zone blitzes are very effective. We have to get used to running them and being in the right spots. So far it has been effective against Mia and Jax. We will get the real test Saturday.

I'm not going to defend us using off coverage as much as we do. But in the interest of giving a fair response- off coverage leads to more INTs. The DBs are able to peak into the backfield and jump routes. Conversely you do give up more stuff underneath. It's a trade off. Grimes excels at it, while Dunta was a man coverage corner before coming here.

Very true and exaclty why I can't figure out why QBs left Robinson alone (for the most part) last year and picked on Grimes more. Why not go after the guy who missed preseason and is switching from a very different scheme?

Because DRob plays on the less attacked side. Due to most QBs being right handed, when they drop back, they are looking at Grimes' side. It's not necessarily because they were scared of Robinson. It just takes longer to scan to his side when you are already opened up to Grimes so you have to see something presnap to begin looking his way, or the play is designed to go his way.

I know everyone says that they targeted Grimes. And that may be true to a small extent. I think the bigger reason is simply that Dunta had good coverage. He is better than people around here give him credit for.

Me personally think that our coverage has its UPS and downs like every defense ..... The off coverage just plain sucks to me now that we added Edwards to our spine I think man coverage would be perfect for our 3 physical corners grimes drob and owens ... I have seen the physical play n franks as I saw in Owens that sidelines HD last preseason ...... Press coverage plus less time to cover due to dline pressure I think man would be better for our corners...... But on the other hand there will be less int's in the man defense ....zone only plus pressure equals more int's man plus pressure equals less 3rd down conversions

I think this plays into the equation, but a lot of it really has been QBs trying to pick on Grimes because of his size.

After the year Brent had last season, I expect to see opposing QBs target him less often and attack D-Rob a little more, so hopefully Robinson can respond to it well and come up with some big plays.

And when QBs DO go after Grimes, they'll get torched just like Henne and Garrard have already this preseason. ;)

This is the way we play defense as a result of the defensive scheme and philosophy we adhere to and ingrain in our defensive unit. We can mix and match of course, but most teams stick to their foundation/base.
