Wow! Take A Look At This

Great time to be a Falcons fan. Anybody complaining about this team must not remember the days in the NFCW with the clampetts owning the team.

It starts with the owner wanting to win, don't think it was ever a priority for the Smiths, it is for Blank.

Blank made a few mistakes early- signed Vick to a huge extension a year too early, was too involved in football decisions, didn't hire the right people- Mora, Petrino, but once he turned the football decisions over to a football person, this team has been on a run.

TD has been amazing, not because he's perfect by any means, but because so many of his decisions have been good ones. If Jerry becomes the beast they thought they drafted and the Oline improves over the next 2-3 years because of players like Reynolds, Valdez, Hawley and Jackson, then he deserves another exec of the year.

This is an important year for several players, and, by extension, TD. Can Ryan take his game up another notch? Can Spoon, Moore and Jerry become the playmakers the D needs? Is Franks a nickel? Edwards, Drob, Reynolds, Baker and Jone all have things to prove this year.

Excellent.

To go along with that we have many individual accomplishments as well. The most impressive, i think, is that Matt Ryan tied the record for the most wins for a QB in thier first three seasons(33-13) held by none other than Dan Marino. wowzers.

To rise from the ashes of 2007 has been incredibly fun to watch. Great time to be a fan of the Falcons.

Regardless what the doubters are saying, i think this teams arrow is still pointing up. Proof of that i bolded above.

This is true. The only way for us to go is straight to the top. This mean SB win.

I wish I wasnt seeing a lot of the same problems we had last season. I want to be optimistic.

I dont like our depth. I think our backups mostly suck. We are going to have injuries to some starters, like every season and every team, but Im just not confident in the players we have to fill their spots when called upon. Julio is going to add another offensive weapon, but we are still running Mularkeys offense and I havent seen anything from his playbook since he's been OC here to make me believe that the offense is going to "open up" much. I think we've pretty much seen everything Mularkeys offense can do schematically, there wont be anything new or surprising.

I like the acquisition of Ray Edwards but is he a player than can change games? Can his presence make the rest of the D-Line better? Or is he the kind of player that depends on a solid D-Line to make plays? Dont know yet, we havent seen him take a snap yet.

Is Dunta and his hamstring going to hamstring the defense all season again? Looking awfully like his first season here when his hammy problem lingered all season. He knows the defense much better this time around but we desperately need him to be healthy this season because if we have to start Owens at CB that will suck.

Which Turner will we get? The one from preseason game 1 where he Burst through the hole? Or the one from jacksonville where he tip toes and gets stuffed.

Is this O-Line better or worse than last season? Baker still sucks. The right side is still a work in progress. Jacksonville man-handled our O Line, and I am curious to see what Pittsburgh does.

We still run the same crap Blitz that has never worked. When you blitz a rookie QB named Gabbert and he sees it coming a mile away and he is still standing on 2 feet after the ball is in the air then something is seriously wrong. Whatever BVG is doing in this department is not working. And we still cannot get off the field in 3rd and Long situations. Same problem as last year. It would help if our defense could wrap up and tackle better.

I got my hopes way up last season. I actually believed we were destined. Then Green Bay came to town and shattered all that, and exposed every flaw this team had. I am reserving judgement this season and will wait and see. This Steelers game will reveal a lot about this team.

You brought up every bad point you could think of. You can do that with every team. You can feel the way you want but I look at facts and how we are better than last year.

1. Mularkey's offense is not the best at times, but its good enough to get 3 winning seasons in a row with the guys we've had in the past and the roster has gotten better. 33 and 48 over the last 3 seasons.

2. Depth - Franks (improved) at the 3rd CB and Owens at the #4. Peterson and Wire backup at LB with Dent there too. Biermann a backup DE with Sidbury looking a little better at DE. Cory Peters or Jerry as a backup, Peters looked solid last year starting and Jerry has looked good this preseason, one of those guys will be a backup. Rodgers in the backfield given us another options to Turner and Snelling. HD in the slot when he has not been a factor due to an ACL one year and recovery efforts the next. I think our depth is good.

3. Have not seen Edwards in a Falcons uniform, but he was a sought after player for a reason. 8.5 and 8 sacks the last two season which is an upgrade over what the Falcons had at LDE.

4. Somebody already did the analysis on how both of the Falcosn CB's were money last year. Didn't give up a lot of TD's didn't give up a lot of big plays. Both were rated in the top 32 so that basically means we have 2 number one's. I know neither is flashy or has the name recognition that Revis does, but they were good and a better pass rusher in the mix should mean their job gets easier.

5. Turner rushed for 1371 yards last year, if he falls off 300 yards he is still over 1000. Snelling and Rogers should take some of the pressure off him, I see no reason our ground production as a team goes down.

6. We lost one guard on the oline. That hurts but we could not bring back everybody. Falcons were #3 in sacks allowed last year. Sam Baker did his job, he was not exposed or an issue. He may not be a star, but you rarely hear his name called. Maybe he gets called for a penalty or give us a sack in 2 or 3 games, but the other 13 games you don't even think about him which is a good thing. Falcons were 12th in QB hits, not bad, not great, middle of the pack, but we protected Ryan better than the Chargers,Bucs,Cowboys, Steelers, Rams, Ravens, Bears and Eagles did. Prospective, Packers gave up 67 hits on QB, Saints gave up 68 while Falcons gave up 69. And yes, both the Saints and Packers gave up more sacks than the Falcons.

7. 3rd and long have been a problem. Ray Edwards will help that. Smith said that they were doing things differently than they would have in the regular season. I believe that as that is what the preseason is for. Even if it was not, we still have another big pickup in Edwards that should help out greatly in that area.

In my book Falcons are still on the rise and a playoff team. We could be looking at a situation where we didn't get our roster any better but that is not the case. Julio Jones will add something to the offense and I think that HD is back and will also add something more. Edwards adds something on D and Nicholas starting is a plus over Peterson as he is younger and a better athlete at this point. Biermann is now 3rd in the DE group and will be a + off the bench. Franks struggled against the Jags some, I saw him fall a lot, but I think he is improved and will add to the D. I'm very encouraged and I see no reason any true, knowledgeable fan should not be.

just as impressive as that, is the fact he did it

Without a solid #2 option in his first year

Without a solid #2 WR in years 2&3

Without a dominant defense, let alone an above average defense, at least in years 1 and possibly 2

And to think they EVER considered Ryan and Flacco to be equal talents.

our 13-3 record last year should/could have been 9-7....go back and check the games...MM would get ahead by 10 pts and start cruising...then BVG would start his conservative defense, and then all of sudden in the fourth quarter its tied or we are losing....If we did not have Matt Ryan and Roddy White, we would have lost 5 of those close games just because of poor coaching...MM and BVG only won, b.c. our QB and WR pulled us out....

That being said, with our division getting tighter in talent the past 2 years, these close games will not roll our way again.....

If we have a poor season, which I think we will, It will be because we will not pull out of these close games again, 1 year of lucky last minute drives is amazing....to wish for 2 is plain insane.

I wonder who the guys were calling the plays that Matt and Roddy won in those comeback victories were? Hmmm. Can anyone help me with this, I am stumped.

You should have stopped with "our record was 13-3 last year" cause that is a fact. The rest of your post was if I woulda, coulda, shoulda bush it that you wish happened.

Yeah we gotta fix that playoff thing but you can't deny what this regime has accomplished in their first three seasons:

2008-2010

-Best start by a new regime in franchise history

-Back to back to back winning seasons

-Made playoffs in two of three years

-One division championship

-Best record in the NFC = 33-15 (.688)

-Third best record in the NFL = 33-15 (.688)

-Home record = 20-4 (.833)

-Road record = 13-11 (.542)

-Best Record in the NFC South = 11-7 (.611)

-Record against AFC teams = 9-3 (.750)

-Record against winning teams = 10-11 (.476)

-Record against non-winning team = 23-4 (.852)

Any questions?

Im glad you postd this, The funny thing is, everyone on the boards has flamed me for talking about our secondary and the severe issues we have and how its not really a problem because we dont play green bay every week.....now looking at the record against winning teams .476 not including the two playoff losses to winning teams and we are at 10-13 which drops that to .434 win percentage.

I also went on to say that its just not about green bay, its about the fact that winning teams are the teams that have Romos/Brees/Manning/Manning/Rivers/Brady/Rogers/ and good wideouts to spread the field to take advantage of our lack of CB depth. thats why we eat up on the teams that are average because they are the teams that dont have enough weapons to spread us out and we can toss grimes and robinson and shut down all their weapons. When you have Brady or Rogers or someone that can throw the ball to 5 different weapons equally efficient then we take away two but he still has more wide open weapons to abuse us with than most teams have at all. Then they put up 48 points on us and we lose turner after the first 21 and thats where the thread came from that Id rather have a good secondary over a turner anyday

Ps that stat tells me that if you make the playoffs we will always play only winning teams and if we can only win 4 of 10 games against teams that are winning teams then we will never win a superbowl unless we beats extreme odds and we win homefield and a bye week because if we have to play in the wild card round, we will have to get 4 wins in a row to win a superbowl against winning teams. If we only win 4 of ten, the we will have to win 4 in a row in the playoffs or 100% we have to improve our percentage in an almost impossible fashion

Numbers are the most telling statistic my friends

Maybe we can lose six games in the regular season to winning teams, win all the games against non winning teams and go 8-8 and squeak our way into a wild card and then if we win the four games to go to the superbowl and take it home, at least then the statistic can stand up and we could still win a superbowl LOLOLOLOLO

Most good teams only have .500 records against winning teams. If you always beat losing teams, and go .500 against winning teams, you'll average a 12-4 record, and have a shot in the playoffs.

That's pretty much the goal. A little step up and then you have a better than .500 chance in the playoffs.

Thank you.

As mentioned earlier, GB was 4-3 against winning teams last year and brought home a Lombardi. We were 5-3. Don't get much better than that.

The key is you have to not only win half of the games we play against winning teams in the regular season, you have to get hot and win 100% of the games we play against winning teams after Christmas to get what we want.
