Northern_Falcon
Does anyone really believe in this guy or even want us to keep this guy? I really don't think I've seen alot from him. Vs Miami he only gained a yard on four carries. Thats pretty terrible. I understand that the bulk of the carries will be between Turner and Sneiling but having a guy that average's .25 yards a carry sounds like a waste of a roster spot. Over his career he avg 3.4yds/carry and to add have you seen his website. http://www.gartrelljohnson33.com/You are an NFL Player at least update it to show the team you are currently on
BleedBlack&Red
This guy is a maybe right now....maybe a verdict after the preseason is over. Antoine Smith on the other hand....anyone see him fighting for the YAC last week? The guy is determined. I vaguely remember Johnson going down fairly easily after contact. 1. Turner2. Snellz3. Quizz4. Smith/Johnson That's what I see right now.
Califalconfan84
I agree he looked like crap... The only thing I can think of to defend him is that he wasn't running into the starting o-line. But yes he looked pretty bad.
delaigle
2010 regular seasonA. Smith 9 games 1 carry -3 yards 0 receptionsG. Johnson 9 games 10 carries 36 yards 3 receptions for a total of 6 yardshowever 1 of Johnson's carries was 23 yards. that means he gained 13 yards total on the other 9 carriesUnless 1 of them improves I'd like to see both gone and someone cut from another team brought in. JRid
Gartrell was showing a lot of effort, but had horrible blocking so didn't really have a chance. One play he got hit and kept churning his legs, but the ref thought his knee touched the ground and blew the whistle. One time Baker completely missed his man and Gartrell got stuffed behind the line.Smith definitely had a better game and that's the best I've seen him play. His biggest weakness has always been that he can't catch the ball, but he made a nice catch and run. I really think last year coach wanted him to be a guy who could catch balls out of the backfield, but they didn't trust him so they didn't get to run those plays. Just looking at the first game I say Smith makes the team and Johnson does not, but that's just one game. I think part of the reason they were playing Smith and Johnson so much is because they need to see what they can do. They know Quizz will make the team so it was a check out the other two guys game. Quizz needs his time in there though because he needs to get better at blocking.

But Quizz blocking? Idk. anyone see that bulldozer of a Dolphin run through Quizz the play before JPW got his a** rocked? I really hope Smith pans out. delaigle
Johnson is one of those tweener guys, not quite a power runner and not quite a speed merchant. He was brought in after Norwood went down in 2010 Said to have good fundamentals. If he suffered from bad blocking last Friday then he also had bad blocking all of 2010.Smith is a speed merchant. ( he holds the #2 records at Fla State behind Dunn)He is said to be a good receiver. I think if he were utilized differently he may prove valuable.Outside stuff where he can use his speed.. He does not seem to be able to go between the tackles like Dunn.I saw him as Norwood's backup and in Norwood's role last year but I was disappointed -- not sure in who him or MM. newgafatboy
that was jacq's first attempt to block a pro, he tried to run up and just put a shoulder in the defender, he'll learn he needs to bring some more lumber for those big guys, he got rolled but at least he didnt wiff, and what about the Philip sylvester, did he see any playing time, one thing i saw about smith, on a little drag or screen, he caught the ball and immediatly turned up field. Only the ball was given to Quizz. Good gain but brought back due to holding.
BadMoonRising
Not sure what game you all saw last week.Smith was the third best back on the field, he passed blocked well and ran well.He is not going anywhere at this point.
Geneaut
Gartrell, at least to my eyes, runs with a jerky motion that seems odd. He also appears to make his mind up immediately about what hole he's going to attack and cannons right into it ... arms and legs flailing.Smith, to me, appears to be a more polished runner. DUB
they give Johnson limited opportunities but he has yet to sieze any of them IMO.

Was it him or just MM doing his thing.
FalconFanSince1970
Smith looked quick against MIA last week. And yes he can catch the ball out of the backfield. I think he and Gartrell are battling for one spot and right now Antone has the lead.
lystrodom
Smith looked better to me than Johnson, during the Miami game. We'll see in future preseason games. One thing that really stuck out to me was Smith's blocking. I saw him get some nice blocks in, even once when he took out two guys. (Unfortunately, the backup line let in 3, so it was still a wash...)
Geneaut
Doesn't Smith return kicks as well ?Resigning Snelling really lowered Gartrell's value to me.
*TMo*
I'm sure glad it's not up to us. I'm pleased we have masterful professionals on the Atlanta Falcons remarkable personnel and coaching staff to make these kind of decisions.
SkerFalcon8710
Smith had that big fumble last year in the preaseason that when it happened everyone on the board went "there goes his chance" that's probably why he never got his chance.. peoriabird
Gartrelle Johnson has limited vision as a runner and doesn't run to day light well...Smith was much better against Miami

Mid-Nite-Toker
Resigning Snelling really lowered Gartrell's value to me.I have to agree with this point, but I still need to see more from G. Johnson and Smith.
