Saints fan thinking we might win?

A lighter in a dark room, My face slowly appears from the darkness, a fresh tear visible on my right cheek. I in a broken sniffling slur of a voice I mutter 'My name is David and my little brother is a die-hard bag headed Saints fan'. After all admitting it is half the battle.

Anyway, while I was talking to little brother the other day I joked about buying his newborn son a shirt that says 'My Daddy's a Saints fan but my uncle has taste'. he laughed and then said he wouldn't be surprised if we won it all this year. I couldn't believe my ears, I said who you guys?? He said "No, the Falcons, I wouldn't be surprised to see them win the super bowl this year". I waited for the punchline after all this is the guy who during football season spews F-a dirty bird, F-a Falcon almost every sentence. Most times he talks like we aren't even in the same league. The punchline never came...he was sincere. :(

I have to say I've had a smile ever since but it's left me contemplating what of the universe. when a Saints fan can extend compliment of this magnitude to a Falcons fan regardless of blood ties it surely must mean the threads of our very existence in this universe are starting to frey and life as we know it will end 1 week before the super bowl.

It's been nice knowing you my forum friends best of luck in the apocalypse.

heck nah you go over to saintsreport.com you will hear some of thee dumbest things you could ever hear anybody say. They got the best everything and we got the worst everything. Somebody over there will make an assumption and a whole thread will take off from an assumption.Even when one of the brighter Saints fan comes in and tells them something they will just continue.

98% of Saints fans are obnoxious.

Well, speaking as a Saints fan, I've mentioned in a couple of posts in RC recently that the Saints and Falcons are pretty evenly matched as they almost always are...I also said in so many words in a thread over there that homerism pretty much trumps objectivity no matter the fan base. Since I prefer to try to keep a more sober perspective, I try to avoid the p****** contests that usually go on back and forth and prefer to just wait for the games to be played on the field...and then congratulate the fan base of the winning team if that team is not mine...so if the Falcons win against the Saints this year, as they very well could because our games are always competitive, that is exactly what I will do...

While I did verb up the story a bit this really did happen and based on track record my little bro is definitively with the 98%? love him but I thinks his hate for us and cockyness exploded after their ring. That's what makes the whole statement so weird.

Holy crap! I just gave a Saints fan a +1 it's all down hill from here.

Thats strange...

Also did anyone else go to espn recently and it asked who is the best Rivals at the moment and Falcons vs Saints weren't even an option.

We are two teams in the NFL that have a legit shot at the superbowl and we weren't an option.

The options are

Bears vs Packers

Eagles vs Giants

Jets vs Pats

Ravens vs Steelers

Other...

Chris, it pains me to say this, but you are a class act.

Let me go gargle now :)

Show me one post in the HISTORY of this site that gives me proof that Chrissy from Louisiana is a Saints fan.She obviously isn't.

Oh Thank you Lord! I was feeling like I was in the Twilight Zone for a minute there. Here we go - now this is the classiness you normally get from a Saints fan.

Keep up the good work, Boys!

If you're an Aint, Succ, Panzie, or Iggle, I hate you. Period. I don't expect any class from any of those fanbases. We're rivals. I do, however, expect knowledgeable debates and not dumb, idiotic trash being spewed post after post. Unfortunately, it's not our job to regulate that, it's the mods. :D

There's always gonna be some homerism/chest-thumping between the two fan bases. The reason why our rivalry is so intense now is because we're both good teams right now. I sort of feel indifferent towards the Panthers, and the Bucs offer me mild annoyance. The Falcons is who I really hate. But hate aside, this is how I see the Falcons offseason:

Though the price may have been a bit steep, Julio Jones was a very good pick up. He has all the tools to be something special. For him, it will be more about getting acclimated to the pro game. He has a leg up on that coming from a pro style offense in college. Drops have been a small red flag, but that's most likely due to a lapse in concentration. That's pretty fixable. He may take a couple of years to come on fully, or he may come out the gate with his hair on fire. It's hard to tell with WR's.

Getting Ray Edwards was a killer move. He's not an all pro, but he's a pretty good player. The Falcons got him young and for a good price. Paired with Abraham (who's a beast), you have a legitimate front 4 pass rush.

You're front office also did a good of retaining two of your three free agent starting lineman. Hurting Dahl hurts, but it would be hard for any front office to retain all three. The o-line is continuity, and the fewer new linemen you have to start, the better.

Quiz Rogders was a very nice draft pick. His stature is small, and it's unknown as of now if he can effectively run in the pro's. Players of similar stature like Sproles and Jones-Drew have made it work. Running aside, he gives the Falcons a nice 3rd down option for Matt Ryan. I don't remember if he returns kicks or punts, but that would make this pick even better.

Now for the concerns.

Gonzo and Turner have helped Ryan arguably more than any other players during his 3 year career. In Ryans rookie year, Turner came out blazing and made the adjustment to the NFL much easier for Ryan. Turner was also critical to what the Falcons do on offense: run first, wear the defense down, go down field. Some may argue with the drafting of Jones that the Falcons are changing their style of offense, but I'm not one of them. Although I do think they'll be looking for more explosive plays, the Falcons need a via rushing attack. Turner has had a heavy work load since joining the Falcons, and it showed in the later half of last season. He wasn't as quick hitting the hole, and didn't seem to have the speed to cut runs to the outside. He still finish with 1300 plus yards, and a respectable 4.1 rushing average. It would go a long way if another via running threat could share the load with Turner. Jason Snelling was brought back, but had a disappointing season in one of the Falcons best years. A 3.7 run average won't be much help to his team, so he'll need to play better. He's on a one year contract, so that may be some extra motivation.

Everyone knows Ryan likes an athletic tight-end as a reliable third down option, and right now there doesn't seem to be an heir apparent to Gonzo. Gonzo, like Turner, showed signs of slowing down last season. This is understandable with his age. But let's be honest; there's no replacing one of if not the best tight end of all time. The Falcons still need a legitimate receiving threat. The only other two tight-ends on the roster with any type of numbers are Michael Palmer and Justin Peelle. Both seem to be role players as of recent, with Michael Palmer still being young enough to develop into a eventual starter. There's also A.J. Simmons, Marquez Branson, and Ryan Winterswyk waiting in the wings. A fan would hope that one of these four young tight-ends will step up for what will likely be Gonzos last year.

Dunta Robinson was a big free agent pick up a year ago, but his play has been inconsistent. Brent Grimes is an up and coming ball hawk who received his first of what I think will be many pro bowl invites. The depth after that is an area of concern. However, as teams are force to shrink their rosters, a veteran CB could land in their laps. The Falcons safeties played pretty well last year, and are still developing. Depth is also another need here. That can most likely happen through developing in-house.

Although the Falcons have one stud wr and a potential second one in Jones, there isn't much proven depth after them. Eric Weems is more of a return man. Harry Douglas, while young, has put up lack luster numbers. They won't need him to be a star, just to put up more than 23 receptions a year. It will be his third year, which seems to be when the light bulb comes on for wr's or doesn't. Kerry Meier is a converted qb, but he's an unknown.

The Falcons are a very good team, who's real concern is depth. No team stays completely healthy, but they were fortunate last year to keep their injuries to a minimum. If health is on their side again, I see them as the very least getting a wild card spot, to repeating a NFC south champs. If their bit by the injury bug, things could head to .500 or sub .500. With the draft day move of trading up to grab Julio Jones, the Falcons clearly think they're on the cusp of a Super Bowl birth. If you're a Falcons fan, you pray for the best. You have to wonder with the lack of depth, did the team put too many eggs in too few baskets? Time will tell.

Turner had a serious groin injury for the last half of the season. He had an operation this offseason and said he is fine now.

If I'm a fan I hope he does. You know the nature of the position. They get tons of runs, injuries mount up, and then they hit a wall. He could very well have another 1300 season. If I'm the team, I'm wanting to decrease his work load so he'll be more effective in the playoffs.

Its funny how they start 3 to 4 threads about the falcons everyday on SR lol

Not really, that's what rival fans do. I will tell you what is really funny to be honest. We start 10 to 12 threads about the Eagles everyday here - when they aren't even in our Division.

We should be starting 3 or 4 threads a day bashing Saints, Bucs or Panthers. Instead, you see 8 threads praising the Eagles and their brilliance, followed by another 2 to 4 talking about how they are going to be beaten.

This board is obsessed with the Eagles, a non-divisional team that we play at the most 1 time a year, while our Division Rival Saints have been notching up wins on us for the past several years.

Look at it this way - the Eagles have our number and have since Reid has been there, that is for sure. But, they are still not in our Division. While we seem to play them every year, they still can't do the damage. Since 2000, our record against both teams has been horrible. Saints 8-14 and Eagles 1-6. Yet, even though we have 6 losses to the Eagles in the past 10 years, we have 14 losses to the Saints. We should be more obsessed with the Saints than the Eagles, but it is just not evident on this board. I wish it were.

If the Saints had 3 or 4 new threads a day about the Bears or Vikings, then that would be unusual.
