g-dawg
CB-Darrin Walls, #2Notre Dame5'11 7/8"188lbs4.50/40PFW Grade: 4.95 Notes:USA Today All-American as a Pennsylvania cornerback-runningback.Committed to the Irish over offers from Florida, Penn State and Others. Positives: Good size and movement skills. Is light on his feet and loose-hipped to shadow receivers in a short area. Good plant-and-drive quickness and short-area burst. Aggressive in run support. Negatives: Does not use hands at the line. Does not pedal fluidly and gets flustered when threatened. Questionable confidence and mental toughness-seems to dwell on mistakes. Instincts are lacking and does not show a sense for break-points - gives up too much separation. Average ball skills - struggles with his back to the ball. Was bested in match-ups versus Pittsburgh WR Jonathan Baldwin. Underwhelming at the East-West Shrine game. Summary: Was part of a three man cornerback rotation and did not progress as scouts wanted under a new coaching staff. Is athletic, but inconsistency, man-coverage limitations and questionable ball skills have lowered his ceiling. His best chance will come in a cover-2 system.NFL Projection: Priority Free Agent

g-dawg
i like his size. hopefully with a little coaching maybe he has a shot t making the roster or ps.he sounds exactly like that "soft cover-2" type corner that Mike Smith loves. Plays 10yds off the LOS and breaks on the ball - good tackler.I think he's a system fit even if I don't love the system. He's not making team in 2011 though - definitely a Practice Squad guy. But he actually has a good shot at making the roster, that is unless we sign a vet cb(I think we will). Besides, it seems like everyone is assuming that Owens roster spot is safe. I don't think the staff is. If Owens shows any signs of being the player he was last season then I bet they cut bait. He's cheap and a core special teamer, but we got other guys like Matthews who can fill that role.

g-dawg
none of the other UDFA's had write-ups in the PFW Scouting Report except for Ryan Wynterswyk(sp?) but I'm not that jazzed about that guy since he was a DE in college and we are trying to convert him to Tight End.PFW I guess does not think highly of any of Falcons other 20 UDFAs. Oh well, our roster is so deep now that I doubt the college UDFAs were a priority for Dimitroff - we need "camp bodies" as Falcons are two deep at almost every position on the team now - we are a little thin at safety and corner but most other positions are deep. If you are a CB in the National Football League and you don't have confidence then the NFL really wlll stand for "Not-For-Long".Would love to see Walls make the team or the Practice Squad - good luck Darrin! vel
Besides, it seems like everyone is assuming that Owens roster spot is safe. If Owens shows any signs of being the player he was last season then I bet they cut bait. So far he hasn't in TC. We will see for sure on Friday but I highly doubt Owens is cut. Even if they bring in a vet, Owens as a #5 is a lot better than any of the UDFAs. But that's what you have coaching for. It's up to Tim Lewis and the secondary coaches to get Owens and Franks to play to the level we all know they can.
pzummo
Walls actually ran a 4.3 40, not 4.5. I hope he can play Special Teams. If so, I think he'll get that 5th CB spot and time to develop his coverage skills. If he can't play ST, he won't sniff the roster.

Coach Smith said Owens had a back injury he was playing through last season that affected him and that they have confidence in him. I don't think there's any chance he gets cut. I do think there's a good chance he won't be the NB, but I can't see us cutting him. He has experience and we have no other CB's on our roster behind him that have NFL game experience. maxatlanta
So if we see Owens go out there in the pre season and get torched like he did last year no one thinks we'll cut him? I'm not predicting he'll be cut. I'm predicting he'd be cut under that scenario.
Falcons Win
If Walls can overcome this, the rest is fixable.+1 I agree here. But that's a huge if, because the mental side of things is something we can't put any sort of assessment on as far as progress, who knows what's going to happen when the big lights turn on. I don't see us picking up a vet unless there's an injury.
g-dawg
Owens should be safe for 2011. Think about it, Owens showed promise his rookie year and played a lot in last few games of 2009. Last year(2010) was definitely a setback for Owens - but you get to have one of those years if you were Dimitroff's 3rd round pick. Chevis Jackson got one of those years but was cut after the 2nd bad year(methinks).Owens will get one more year to prove he is worthy of being a Falcon - however, if Owens stinks it up in 2011, then he will probably be gone in 2012.Dimitroff's "specialty" is supposed to be the secondary and he has done well with picking safeties - corners, not so much! Peele is a free agent next season, and Tony G might retire after this year... we can't go into 2012 with Michael Palmer as our only tight end. If we like Palmer's shot to be our full-time starter, then Winterswyk could take over Peele's role as a blocker, and we'd probably draft another tight end just for depth.
