HD is the wildcard in our offense

Recommended Posts

Do you remember the game we had against Cincy last season? Everyone was focused going in on Ocho and TO. But it was Jordan Shipley who burned us for 130 yards and a TD. He only caught 6 passes, so most of them probably counted as "explosive plays."

We don't have to throw the ball 20+ yards in the air to have lots of 20+ yard pass plays. We have to have YAC out of our slot WR (and from our RBs too). HD played terrible last year. If he is the guy everyone wants him to be then that alone will get our explosive plays up significantly.

This is a good thread Max. It is something that should be explored by the fan base as this certainly is a very real wildcard that isnt getting a lot of run. HD can be a huge factor this year. With his confidence back, we can all enjoy something special. I heard he looks good too...

Agreed, he should be FULLY healled from the ACL now, so it will not be an excuse. If he AND Meier can play well, we are going to have a VERY, VERY good offense.

I am staying very positive about this year, but we do have alot riding on 'what if's'

PJ- is he healthy?

HD- Healthy?

Meier- Healthy?

Franks- will be be successful as the NB?

But overall, I think we will be ok.

If HD can step up he'll be the perfect compliment to the other recievers in our offense. I'm hopefull but his showing last year has me lacking faith. I also read something on here the other day that said the WR coaches are spending more time with him than JJ, If that's true then it's very concerning considering his seniority over JJ.

Hope he can do it. shoot, even if he can't I hope someone can.

HD didn't play terrible. HD is a receiver you have to get the ball in motion to be effective. he's not gonna do well running come back, stop & out routes because it seems like he's trying to make his move before he gets hit and that results in drops. hit him on slants or coming out of his breaks and he can light it up. I think they moved away from too early last season. when receivers suffer from drops the best thing to do is keep going at them. if you stop throwing at them it affects their confidence.

I think HD is primed and ready. He is back from all reports from TC. With Julio and Roddy handling outside the numbers and occupying the safeties, HD is free to roam the middle with Tony G. This is what was supposed to happen when we first brought TG in but HD got hurt and Jenkins regressed. Add in a healthy Meier and Weems and this WR is deep and strong. Not to mention the talent on the PS.

I was very dissapointed with Harry Douglas last year. His contribution will be very important.

However, the key to the falcons offense will be whether Julio Jones can actually make a significant impact at wide receiver as a rookie and if he can stay healthy for the majority of the season.

Kerry Meier could end up actually being the wildcard if Julio Jones is unable to stay healthy.

HDeezy will be a factor this year. He played lights out as a rookie. So we know he can ball. Last year he was hampered by his previous injury. All reports are stating that the guy is back in 09 form. I am confident that he will do some damage like he did his rookie year. I remember a couple times last year he had chances for big plays. He and Ryan were out of synch. Hopefully they have fixed that problem.

Including the playoff game, HD had 23 receptions for 296 yards and 1 TD. Compare that to Shipley's one game against us when he had 6 receptions for 130 yards and 1 TD.

No need to debate why his numbers were terrible. 1.4 receptions per game won't cut it, 17.5 yards per game won't cut it. 1 TD in 17 games won't cut it. There is no greater potential for improvement on our offense than at slot WR. That was my only point.

Coming back to a guy who dropped a few is a good thing. Someone said that the coaches are spending more time w/ him than with Julio. If this is true, i hope it is not an indication that he is not getting up to speed on the mental aspects of reading the D and being in the proper place... I am pulling for him to be a guy that can torment defenses who desperately try to stop Roddy, Julio, Gonzo & Michael Turner.

I am sure the coaches were just spending time with HD as he is still a young player who needs coaching, just like everyone else. So I plan in thinking positive and look forward to him just scorching some Dbacks this year.

I don't see health being an issue with Julio. If he can walk, he will play. Just look at the broken foot and hand for evidence. It has to be serious for him to miss time. Same with Roddy. I mean unless its the most dreaded injury of sports

that's one of the things I always liked about Peyton Manning, if you drop a pass he gonna get in your face in the huddle then he gonna come right back to you. Peyton makes receivers play better because if Peyton Manning is up in your face and he STILL wants to give you the ball, you d@mn well gonna catch it or you gonna get dismissed like Hank Baskett

I hope HD has a phenomenol season, but I am comfortable knowing Meier can also play slot... with a QB's head to read the D and has 'Hands-of-Hoover'

Dropped passes kill drives. 3rd down drops that would have been first downs are cause for serious a$$-chewing on the sidelines at this level. I remember reading about how Fred Biletnikoff used to throw thousands and thousands of balls against a wall to practice improving his hand eye coordination because you never knew which way the ball was going to bounce back... He was also the guy who just about invented stickem'... he used to cover his entire arms and hands with it. He was the main guy who set the standard for recievers like Cliff Branch and Tim Brown... Bring in a guy like this for HD to learn about what it will take or maybe plug in some old school film... He may be dead by now who knows... but in his day he was fun to watch!

A good pro always picks his guys back up and has their back... Redemption is a beautiful thing man.

right, and that's my beef with MM. people always say 'well he can't run this play or that play' but obviously if our guys are still putting up the kinda numbers they do when EVERYBODY and THEIR MAMA knows what play we gonna run common sense should tell you they're good enough to run anything he wants to run. I've always heard Turner is a liability in the passing game but after watching all last seasons game I've yet to see him drop a pass that came to him. MM gotta have more faith in these guys
