This one is interesting. Alabama brings back pretty much their entire D but lose McElroy, Jones, and Ingram.

LSU is always a mystery.

Oregon brings back maybe the most explosive offense in CFB.

Andrew Luck returns.

FSU looks to gain steam off an impressive initial campaign from Jimbo.

Boise has become one of the most consistent programs in the nation.

Defense wins championships. Even though Auburn had one of the worst defenses in the SEC they are still from the SEC and defense in the SEC is a must have thing, not a can do thing. That is why almighty Oregon who scored 55+ relentlessly was held to 19. Oregon had a defense good enough to hold Cam Newton and Auburn to 22 but Oregon's offense was just another non-conference offense against the strength of an SEC defense. Nine teams scored more than 19 against Auburn last year, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Georgia scored more than 30. The SEC will have another NC in 2011 because the SEC has the best defense in the Nation.

I think Stanford has to be #2 preseason. They return every important piece other than the head coach, but I believe Harbaugh left that program in a great place and they made a very good choice in replacing him.

Oregon lost some key players on both sides of the ball, but still having Thomas and James in the backfield gives them a lot of hype.

Not buying Bama at #2 preseason. They will have a very good defense, but a brand new QB and the loss of two 1st round players on offense can't be overlooked.

LSU, FSU, and BSU all have to prove they belong at the top. Oklahoma ran circles around FSU ladt season. LSU is too inconsistent to put at #2 and we just don't know if they'll skate by again on the mistakes of other teams at the end of games. BSU lost to Nevada and lost their top 2 receivers.

Harbaugh is a huge reason why Stanford has emerged. One thing we know is a superstar QB can take you far in college football. Interesting pick!

Agree that Harbaugh was huge for Stanford but I also agree with Carter. I think that because the core of the team is still there the can do without him for one year. They can keep the ship afloat for one year, imo. Expect Stanford to regress back to previous years after Luck and co. leave though

I'm just not getting the FSU hype whatsoever. Oklahoma and VT (who was very unimpressive outside the ACC) had no trouble with them, and beating a Lattimore-less South Carolina (Kentucky did the same) doesn't exactly scream top 5 pre-season ranking to me. Not to mention, they didn't exactly dominate any of the very mediocre lot of ACC Atlantic foes, and needed NC State to lose to Maryland in the last week to win the division. We'll see, I guess everyone sees what Saban did to Bama in one offseason after a disappointing season, and thinks Fisher is primed to do it at FSU.

I'm with you, though I suspect some will fault your opinion due to your affiliation lol... definitely agree with you though. They look to be scary good in the future, but I doubt if that starts this year. Manuel just isn't proven and they really have no identity on offense even with some very good talent... plus they got torched on a few occasions defensively and only won their division because NC State somehow lost to Maryland of all teams.

It's impossible for me to objectively see them as a top 5 team... even top 10. At least at this point. If they get into their schedule and look good winning my opinion may change. If they lose to Oklahoma but keep it close I could still give them some credit there. But I think OU will beat them soundly... don't even think that game will be close.

I respect your opinion completely. But I thought Manuel did pretty good in his 2-0 in bowl games...both against higher ranked opponents but I understand. FSU is a very young team and I don't agree with top 5 ranking. But this poll was voted on by the coaches of the NCAA, so I'll just have to try and trust them. I see us at #9. The reason we have no identity on offense is we spread the ball. We have no number 1 at WR or RB. We use a stable and they all do pretty darn well. Our defense got beat pretty bad in 2 games, but I can't really blame them with how young they are. But I still do not expect to beat OU, but I do believe it will be close.

Fact of the matter is CJF brought in an entire new staff and in his first season went 10-4, played in the ACCCG and won the ACC SEC match up. Doing these things will bring a certain buzz to a program. This is the year we see if FSU truly is "back".

Can't disagree with any of your points. I definitely think FSU is on the right track and they will be back in a powerful way... Jimbo has done one HECK of a job since taking over. Far better than anyone could have expected, honestly.

When I say Manuel isn't proven, I don't mean it as a slight on his ability... I mean it as a component in not viewing the FSU hype as realistic. He may come out and be great, but in my opinion he hasn't shown enough to put so much stock in him preseason. You guys have plenty of talent all over the field and your team should very realistically be expected to be better this year, so I'm not trying to sell the Noles short too much. I just believe there is a lot they need to show on the field to justify their preseason ranking.
