This will slow down the competition between Johnson and Reynolds. Hopefully it isn't too bad. I assume he received the concussion during Friday night lights.

#Falcons coach Mike Smith doesn't know if OG Mike Johnson (concussion) or TE Marquez Branson (left knee) will play in the opener on Friday.

That sucks because concussions are career killers. How does an OG get a concussion? We have plenty of guys to fight for that spot. Good thing it is only one opening to fill. Hawley and Reynolds front runners now?

concussions aren't that bad. He'll be back probably by next week

Don't forget about a 7th-round draft pick this season Andrew Jackson.

"One rookie that few have said anything about is the Falcons seventh-round selection Andrew Jackson, a guard from Fresno State.

One rookie to keep an eye on is Andrew Jackson, he (Pat Yasinskas) said. They think they got a steal. I heard from other personnel people around the league and they share the same opinion on Jackson.

Yasinskas felt Jacksons concerns over an ankle injury that kept him out for much of his senior year hurt Jacksons stock."

From an August 6 Pat Yasinskas article entitled Matt Ryan Thrilled with O-Linemen:

"Well have more on the battle to replace Dahl in Sundays Camp Confidential segment on the Falcons. But third-year pro Garrett Reynolds appears to be the early leader. Second-year pro Mike Johnson also is in the mix.

Theres one other surprise candidate. Thats seventh-round draft pick Andrew Jackson. Coaches are saying he's been one of the most pleasant surprises in camp so far. Even if Jackson doesnt end up starting, he appears well on his way to a roster spot. He can be a key backup because he has the ability to play guard and tackle."

Another promising report on Andrew Jackson:

"Aug. 07, 2011 10:36 a.m. - by Knox Bardeen - OG Jackson pushing people around

Rookie OG Andrew Jackson was pushing defensive linemen around in 9-on-7 drills. The seventh-round pick from Fresno State has been impressive in camp thus far. Falcons RapidReports"

well, with all these new CBA/NFL rules now regarding concussions, I could easily see this costing Mike Johnson two weeks of practice and playing time.

Agree with those saying this gives Garrett Reynolds the inside track to starting Right Guard position.

More on Jackson from Pat Y. Thinks he will be a starter at some point!

The biggest camp battle is at right guard, where former starter Harvey Dahl left for St. Louis in free agency. Garrett Reynolds has been getting most of the first-team work so far and appears to be the leading candidate to start. Second-year pro Mike Johnson also is in the mix. But one of the most pleasant surprises of camp so far has been seventh-round pick Andrew Jackson. He might not be quite ready to start, but he's likely to make the team and could emerge as a key backup at guard and tackle in the short term and potentially could be a starter down the road.
