If Snelling Leaves, Who Should Falcons Sign

Recommended Posts

If Snelling signs a contract with another team, which no one (including me) wants to happen, which free agent should the Falcons sign?

BenJarvus Green-Ellis? Michael Bush? Cadillac Williams? Ronnie Brown? Kevin Smith? Brandon Jackson?

Let's hear it...

*EDIT* Just so everyone knows this is NOT an anti-Snelling post. If I was TD I'd give my last dollar for this guy. It doesnt take him many touches to turn it into 6 and as I said in a previous post, the way he filled in for an injured Turner and didnt let the offense miss a single beat is what makes him a coach's dream.

Ideally we keep Snelling with a 1 year deal lets him hit the market next year and lets us look to the draft or FA for Turners heir. If he walks there aren't many options they include.

Ronnie Brown-At 29 and 230 lbs not really a receiving back but averages around 30 catches a season so could fill in that role and split carries with Turner who should only carry around 250 times in the reg season

Jerome Harrison-28 years old with more explosion than Brown. Hasnt shown much as a receiver in his career but has shown ability as a runner when given opportunities. Could become an option as a #2/receiving back for a season.

Cadillac Williams-29 probably wont come here from Tampa. Once a very talented back has had many injuries. Has 70+ the last 2 seasons combined.

Julius Jones-29 may be available for cheap, has some experience as a receiver, has some speed

2 in house options

Snelling-27 years old. Our best option. He may be wanting a big multi year deal, wed rather a 1 year deal. Ideally we keep him 1 year. Give him 100-150 carries and around 30 catches splitting time with Rodgers as the receiving back

Norwood-28. Has breakaway speed as a runner, receiver, and returner. Durability is a major concern and his frame is injury prone. If he wants to take a small 1 year deal Id offer it if healthy, especially as Snelling is still unsigned

The FA market is rather slim Id rank our options thus

1. Snelling

2. Harrison

3. Norwood

4. Jones

Snelling can be the #2 power runner and the primary receiving back if Rodgers is not ready. Harrison brings more breakaway running speed to the table than Snelling and can be a more productive receiver than he has been thus far, may be a good fit, particularly on a 1 year deal. Norwood brings exactly what we want hes a very dangerous player hes just such an injury concern. Jones may be a good cheap under the radar signing.

I still say the best back-up to Turner and Mughelli would be Le'Ron McClain, but we could actually stand with Johnson who is already signed and I think would be fine behind Turner and Rodgers.

I could deal with this scenario.

Le'Ron McClain would be a good signing for the right price, but going with Gartrell is more in line with our coaching staff and FO and how they have built this team.

I'm all for giving Johnson a chance, but Snelling leaves some pretty big shoes to fill.

It's up to MM to distribute Snellings' touches, and i'm not sure i trust our current backfield to shoulder the load.

He and Norwood both. We'll just have to see. I'm actually all for Gartrell.

If Snelling leaves I don't think the Falcons should sign anybody new, last time I looked I think they have like 8 RB's on the roster or something like that. Some might be practice squad, some might be potentials, Some may be cut, it doesn't matter, what does matter is that Turner is on the roster, and JR is somebody who might be a for sure play maker IMO.

Who's to say Ovie M. can't run the ball? He has been a pro bowler a few times incase you haven't noticed, or incase others haven't if blocking is an issue.

Don't get me wrong. I'll be honest, WE CAN IMPROVE WITHOUT SNELLING AROUND, although with him around we have a solid quick fix RB. Just my opinion, I'm not going to lie and say he's better than Turner, or that he can carry the load for the team like Turner can, that would be wrong for me to say so. He can get some yards, but he is by no means the best option for the Falcons at RB if Turner goes down because Turner is the best option, anybody who thinks that is kidding themselves.

I wish Snelling the best, he would be at best a nice backup, insurance policy for the FALCONS, but he's not better than the Falcons starting RB Michael Turner, and that's what you look for when you start looking at options for a team IMO.

We've saw what Snelling can do, Solid sometimes, but some of you forget a lot of his fumbles early on also. Yeah he's developed but he's also not as good as Michael Turner and that's what you look for, I feel like we've seen the best of Snelling, sad as it might be, it's the truth IMO.

I think we can do better for a backup for Turner. I guess I'll get a ton of neg's for saying this, but I'm being honest, that's my opinion. It's time to give somebody else a chance at backup "IF SNELLING DECIDES TO LEAVE", but I also don't think we need to break the bank to keep him here.

Just my opinion.

At least I'm being honest in my opinion.

I didn't know Jerome Harrison was a free agent. Wouldn't mind if we picked him up.
