What Colin Cowherd just said at about 10:30am this morning

Wait, are you talking about Rice and Moss?

Moss 69 catches, 1300 yards, 17 TDs

Rice 49 / 967/ 3

I'd take a Rice type season, much less a Moss type season.

Cowherd never mentioned Randy Moss; he compared Julio to Rice and Terrell Owens.

For comparison's sake, T.O.'s rookie season was 35 / 520 / 4.

I don't think any rookie will ever come close to what Moss was able to do for the Vikings that year... too bad we stopped them. ;)

I think expectations are going high very fast for Julio.

I do think he has star potential, but rookies have a hard time living up to that sort of hype.

Exactly...

Roddy is widely considered the best WR in the game today.... But think back to, not only his rookie year, but his first few years.... Most of us wanted him cut...

I really hope that the masses do not turn on him if it takes him a while to settle in to the NFL game.... Game Day is MUCH different than 9 on 7's in August....

I have no doubt that he will be a star receiver in this league, but the expectations that are being heaped on him are lofty for ANY player, let alone a 21 year-old rookie...

If he reaches those numbers that Cowpie threw out there, I will be ecstatic...

If he doesn't, I certainly wont think the sky is falling.... I hope the rest of the Falcons Faithful are patient/reasonable, too....

I'm more excited about JJ than any player in recent memory. I can't wait to see him in action. I'm definitely not expecting a Moss type rookie season but I can see a TO Rice type rookie season happening. I'm try really hard not to over hype him but it's so **** hard

I personally love "The Herd" I feel like he about as impartial as they come and he actually talks about the ENTIRE sports landscape. It''s so refreshing being able to listen to someone's opinion on teams and conferences outside of Boston, New York, Philly, or Dallas.

Colin also went on to say that the Falcons have had one of the best offseasons in the NFL with only Philly standing out as the only team who did more to get better. He also said that the Falcons didn't have to do as much as Philly did because we had fewer needs. He gave the Falcons and Iggles an A for their offseason.

I've only managed to get to one camp session, and Julio did look like a beast. Ryan never threw to him while I was there but he was open every play and was amazingly fast. Roddy was looking great right off the line as well. It's looking like we may have the best WR's in the league next year as far as breaking off the line and getting open goes.

Colin was talking about free agency moves, the Eagles, Jets, blah, blah, blah and was talking about contenders in the East.

Colin thought the signing of Ray Edwards was solid and would help gel the Falcons defense - something to that affect.

Regarding Julio Jones, Colin said from the people he knew and trusted that were watching Falcons practices at Flowery Branch that Julio Jones looks like a star - a beast - Colin said that he was told that Julio looks like he could have 75 catches this year and 10TDs - he said that he's been told that Julio Jones could be like a "young Jerry Rice" or a "young Terrell Owens" - this is VERY high praise - Colin really expects big things from Atlanta offense.

I was stunned hearing this high praise - it got me fired up!

G-Dawg i can't stand articles like this where people compare him to the greatest WRer to ever play the game and he may well be but I'm sceptical as he to me is still unproven I like him but to me he is still RAW and UNPROVEN I'll reserve my judgement till about week 8 after the bye then maybe we can have a more accurate evaluation.

i hear ya.....the media in most markets are hyping 1-2 players on every NFL team right now - usually its a local media with a local bias though. While Cowherd likes the Falcons he is not beholden to Falcons team - he likes Matt Ryan and Arthur Blank, no doubt.

I just think its a very good sign that Julio is looking so good so early in camp. Week#8 is probably the right time to consider what a rookie player is looking like for the year.

having said that, let your self go a little kiwi and buy into the hype. Its fun - and I think the production may come close to the hype.......if not this year, most likely by year 2 or 3.

I heard this as well. The guy has a man crush on Matty. He thinks elite QB play is essential and he thinks we have/will that. He also really likes our GM and Owner tandem.

I don't see Julio getting 10 TDs, however, I do see him being productive. Julio's going to have to prove consistently that he can be consistant. Camp jargon is cool, but we've seen people look like Tarzan in practice and play like Jane in a real games before. Seems to me like too much pressure is being put on the dude, we need him, but we need veterans to step up more.

and last week I heard he said Atlanta would not win 10 games this season. The guy is a waffler.

I think 75 catches and 10TDs could be a little ambitous - I think it could happen but probably would fall a little short of that.

I could see 60catches, 800yds and 8TDs though - i think that is do-able.

I think one factor that could greatly contribute to JJ's success, and something that really excited me about the pick, is that Julio's college offense was very similar to what we run, just with different terminology. This will mean a substantially quicker learning curve.

I really think TD had that in mind when drafting him. He had to be thinking with the lockout causing players to miss valuable "learning time", heres an "explosive" player that will transition very smoothly, regardless of the lockout.

Its gonna be a fun year!

It's totally possible, but for that to happen we have to shift to throwing the ball a lot more and I don't think that will be the case, I hope so, but I doubt it. I predicted he would have 6 TDs and more than his fair share of RAC yds, but if he gets 8 or more, then happy days.

Not really, he get Jenks catches and takes a few of the targets away from White and he get's 60 catches easy in the same offense.

Mike Mayock on NFLN:

"I see a lot of excitement and explosion, Paul. The concern coming out of his season last year was 'How fast is he? How explosive is he?' When you move from 27th to sixth in an NFL Draft to get a player, he better be explosive. And so far, the first couple days out here, apparently, he won every deep battle yesterday, Paul.

"First throw of team this afternoon, 60-yard pass, good coverage. He went up over the shorter DB, pulled it down. And I talked with Matt Ryan after practice extensively. And what Matt had to say is, with this kid's explosion, not only is Roddy White gonna see a lot more single coverage, but Tony Gonzalez could have the best year of his CAREER if he's able to work inside against safeties and LBs."

Paul Burmeister:

"Are they using the rookie, Julio Jones, more inside or outside right now, Michael?"

Mike Mayock:

"Right now, it's exclusively on the outside, Paul. And as it progresses, it might change. But the way I see it is Roddy White and the rookie on the outside, and then you've got Harry Douglas working the inside -- I think they really like Kerry Meier, the former QB -- also can work the inside. And Eric Weems, that PR/KR, is probably their fifth WO."

Paul Burmeister:

"Kerry Meier out of (University of) Kansas blowing out his knee last preseason. So, kinda like getting extra rookie with him healthy this year.

"Jamaal Anderson, the DE, a former first-round pick, released at defensive end. They bring in Ray Edwards. How big of an upgrade was that?"

MM:

"Well, let's put this in perspective. I really like Ray Edwards and I really think he's a very good football player. He played on an outstanding line in MN. Don't forget he the Williams' guys inside and Jared Allen on the other side. I think he'll line up opposite the RT and he'll be very good. He'll be stout against the run. I think he's a sneaky edge rusher. I think he can get to the QB. He's quick; he's tough. And I think it's a heck of an acquisition for this team."

PB:

"Matt Ryan set the bar awfully high the last three seasons. How's he look?"

MM:

"I think he looks as good as I've ever seen him looking, Paul. And I think what he does as well, or better, than any other young QB that I've ever seen -- with the exception of maybe, Peyton Manning -- his anticipation on the intermediate and deep routes is outstanding.

"When you see him throw the football off play-action on a skinny post; when you see him throw the stick-nod to Gonzalez; the ball is in the air before the receiver even looks at it. And the conversation I had with Matt is that Julio Jones has kinda gotta get used to that. He's not used to flipping his head around and the ball being on top of him. And that's one of the things he and Matt have been working on."

PB:

"And Matt entering his third season, having played two seasons already in the NFL. Kind of an 'under-the-radar' move by TD -- but pretty important -- to keep the OT, Tyson Clabo"

MM:

"Yeah, Tyson Clabo and don't forget the guard, also. I think the guard was really important also -- the kid out of Texas -- because now you can lose Harvey Dahl. And the competition at the RG spot between Garrett Reynolds out of UNC and Mike Johnson out of UA, you've only got one opening on that offensive line.

"And Paul, make no mistake about it, the only reason they're able to do that, is the difference in the rookie-wage scale. When you sign Julio Jones, the sixth-overall pick in the draft, you save $20MM compared to the same slot a year ago. That means you can go out and get a Ray Edwards or re-sign two of your offensive linemen."

PB:

"Do you predict that the Falcons will be a better team?"

MM:

"I'm not sure that they're gonna go 13-3, but I do believe that they're gonna be a better football team. And this is a team that's gotta take the next step in the playoffs. So do I think it's a playoff team? Yeah. Watch out for the Saints. They're in a tough division.

"I think they upgraded their explosion on offense; we've already talked about JJ; I think they fifth-round steal in Quizz -- I gave him a second-round grade. Maybe I'm wrong. But that's an explosive kid that's gonna come off the bench on third downs and make a difference.

"And really where they gotta get better is on defense. They were in the top ten in points allowed; they did a great job in TO differential; but I think if some of those former high-round picks for them... look at William Moore... took a big step last year. He could be a pro bowl safety. Peria Jerry, a former first-round DT, he has to get it to the next level. And if that happens, along with (Sean) Weatherspoon -- let's face it, when he went down, their Nickel package was different. So if he stays healthy, and Moore and Jerry play as advertised, then it's a better defense."

to be honest if they use JJ for jump balls he could get 10TDS, i mean he might get a few just off of being played one-on-one... he should get a lot of chances'
