g-dawg
Detroit Lions could be closing in on new deal for Cliff AvrilPublished: Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 11:22 AM By Tom Kowalski ALLEN PARK - The Detroit Lions have refused to comment on contract negotiations concerning defensive end Cliff Avril, but the two sides could be getting close to a long-term extension.Avril is a restricted free agent and was tagged with a first-round tender. That means teams would have to compensate Detroit with a first-round draft pick if they signed Avril to an offer sheet and the Lions didn't match. Avril will be an unrestricted free agent after this season and it's in the Lions' best interests to get him locked up in a long-term deal as quickly as possible. If they can't come to a deal now, Avril can sign the one-year tender and then a long-term deal can be worked out later.Avril didn't comment specifically on negotiations, but seemed to think things would come to a resolution."Some of that stuff is still getting ironed out. We'll figure it out. I think it'll all work out,'' Avril said today as he entered the practice facility.
g-dawg
btw, Avril would cost in compensation a 3rd rounder.if Lions already are working on a deal for Avril, they most likely would Match any offer the Falcons made - so we are wasting our time on this one - MOVE ON... jeffro2000
We were never in any place to offer compensation for him anyway. However, I like Avril a lot, after Johnson, I would prefer him, but never really thought he was a possibility.

g-dawg
GUYS HE IS A RESTRICTED FREE AGENT. Why would anyone have their hopes up to begin with?well, you would be suprised.i had been hearing Avril's name for 3 days now on the boards. He's a good player but there is no chance of us getting him - posted this article to end the debate.Avril was tendered at 3rd rounder but clearly Lions would match any offer Falcons would put up.
