Charles Johnson stays with Panthers, gets $32 million guaranteed

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 26, 2011, 5:46 PM EDT

Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson was expected to be a sought-after free agent, but he won’t be going anywhere.

A league source tells PFT that the Panthers and Johnson have agreed on a deal that will keep Johnson in Carolina.

The Panthers’ front office and Johnson’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have worked out a six-year, $76 million deal with $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus.

The 25-year-old Johnson started all 16 games for the Panthers last season and recorded 11.5 sacks.

good luck with the panthers... I wanted Johnson but not for 12+ mil a year.... I knew they had to over pay him to keep him

Big improvments come at a cost, particulary this off-season. How "explosive" are we going to look with the same damnn rotation we had last year?

Ray Edwards just popped the champagne bottle.

agreed. Drew Rosenhaus just made Edwards another $10million and he is not even Edwards agent.

Doesn't disappoint me because I never thought it was a real possibility anyway.....

In some ways this helps the Falcons out regardless.....A division rival team that has that many holes sinking that much money and cap space on one (admittedly very good) player?

The top suitors for Edwards are us and philly, the best either can offer is 8 Mil. So unless the best DEs want to go play for ****** teams.. i'll just give Biermann another shot and wait for Mario Williams next year, when we have Abe and tony G coming off the books.

I told you JR was opening up that wallet.

well, good luck to you.....that is too much money - CJ better be a superstar for that kind of money - if his production is not 10+ sacks/yr for the remainder of the contract then you guys got ripped a new one.
