Jerry Richardson calls 10-year labor deal "historic." Says the Panthers will be aggressive in free agency, departure from last 2 years.

Jerry Richardson promises the Carolina Panthers will aggressively pursue free agents.

But Richardson, who owns the Panthers, says that most of those free agents already wear Carolina black and blue.

"We're going to concentrate on our own first," says Richardson.

Sources say that Carolina's top free-agent target will be defensive end Charles Johnson, who became a star last season.

The Panthers will pursue running back DeAngelo Williams despite their depth at the position.

Carolina will almost certainly retain linebacker Thomas Davis.

The Panthers also will attempt to sign long-term a player or players who have yet to become free-agents. Candidates include Pro-bowl linebacker Jon Beason and Pro-bowl center Ryan Kalil.

Well a pretty significant portion of current Panther fans used to be Redskin fans so...

Because the Falcon sucked so much that the state of NC southern VA and Northen SC didn't want to show their games. I didn't know about their was a team in atlanta until 1989.

So if we were better 20 years ago you would have been a Falcon fan instead of a Redskins fan?

Maybe if we could have seen your games. But I'm glad NBC and CBS were smarter then that and went with a team like the redskins. I might not have loved football as much as a falcon fan.

So you were a Redskins fan and just went with the local team when it came to be? That's some loyalty right there.

Not sure where you're going with this. Falcons came out around '66.. There were a few teams out before them, I'm willing to wager that some of their original fans used to cheer/support other teams prior to Atlanta getting a franchise.

That is all good and well but how do they sell themselves? The city, new FO, a rookie project QB, FA's that want to leave, 3 winning season over the last decade? These are all negative attributes for a team to sell to a potential FA don't you think?

How do you repeatedly come to these types of conclusions?

Anderson optimistic he will be back

Thomas Davis used his free time during the lockout to finish his degree from Georgia.

James Anderson traveled out of the country a couple of times.

With the lockout apparently nearing an end, both of the Panthers' free agent linebackers are ready to resume playing – and both are fairly confident they'll be playing in Charlotte.

Davis has said repeatedly he and the Panthers have a mutual interest in Davis re-signing with Carolina. Anderson made similar comments Tuesday during an interview with the Observer.

“Before the lockout I talked to (general manager) Marty (Hurney), and the Panthers were saying they wanted to bring me back. But since then we really can't talk so when free agency starts we'll see what happens,” Anderson said.

“I want to stay in Charlotte. No doubt about it. I've been here my whole time and I love the city, so I would love to stay.”

Potential free-agent center Ryan Kalil wasn't upset about receiving the franchise tag Tuesday, and the other two players who could have been tagged both professed their desire to stay as well.

Technically speaking, the Panthers risk losing defensive end Charles Johnson and running back DeAngelo Williams as unrestricted free agents (assuming a new collective-bargaining agreement is reached), but they might not.

"I think we all three want to stay, and I think they want to keep all three of us," Kalil said. "I think right now, it's a matter of until the CBA is resolved, nothing else can happen. But their actions tell us, and from talking to (general manager) Marty Hurney and (owner Jerry Richardson), as well as talking to those two guys, it's clear.

"They want to try to keep the core guys together, especially the ones who have played well. I do think there's an urgency on their part, they want to keep us all here."

Johnson said Tuesday he wasn't necessarily expecting the tag himself - to do so would have cost more than $13million - but he hopes something can be done to keep him here once a CBA is reached.

"Yeah, I want to stay here," Johnson said. "We'll see what happens with the CBA, but this is where I want to be. I just like Charlotte, like what I've established here, and hopefully we can figure out a way to keep that going."

Williams echoed those sentiments, though the soon-to-be 28-year-old back likely is behind Kalil and Johnson in terms of priority when it comes to long-term investments.

"My thoughts are still the same, I want to be here," Williams said in an e-mail. "But until we get a CBA deal done we can only speculate on the endless possibilities.

"But yes, I want to be a Panther."

As far as selling themselves, keep in mind this isn't the NBA. Contracts aren't guaranteed; and the shelf-life on free-agents being able to maximize their earning potential is extremely limited. In the NFL, more times than not, money is the deciding factor.

Yeah, they have me scratching my head also with the "FAs don't wanna go there". I agree with you, FAs go where the money is. How else have the Skins, the Dolphins (examples), been able to sign big name players over the years?

Really I was just cracking a joke about Panther fans having been Redskins fans, I don't consider it that big a deal so much as I just like busting koolkat's balls, he takes this serious as a heart attack.
