g-dawg
I agree with you that the Falcons need to make an addition on the Defensive Line. I'm just looking at the financial situation, and it will take sacrifices with other positions, probably several other positions, to make this happen.maybe other sacfrifices will need to be made - it always seems with "cap crunching" teams can get more than you think they can....but whatever - sacrifices must be made otherwise, we don't have the look of a team that wants to win a SuperBowl. Arthur Blank(Falcons) is not Liberty Media(Braves). Arthur wants to win a SuperBowl and he will do what it takes - he is telling Dimitroff/Smith - tell me what you need - i want it and i want it now! And maybe it won't look like the Falcons are not wanting to win the Super Bowl. Doesn't mean it won't happen though.I think people are being naive if they say "Well, we've always been able to do ....with the salary cap."That is all irrelevant. From 2005 to 2009, the salary cap was going up by 10 mil per year. That provided a lot of flexibility. This year, the cap is going to be less than in 2009. It cramps things a bit. Guest mashburn
My linkhere is power rankings of the top 32 people who make the pull the trigger on FA. pretty funny that you posted this today. SPOILER ALERT: TD is number 1.

TOTALLY SHOCKEDthe thing is, you could let all 3 go then you can sign a top DE with that money. that may fix your DE problem, But you have not effected the salary cap in any way just move the $$$ from 3 to 1. You still then must cut or restructure other players to have any effect on the salary cap at all. There will have to be a lot of cutting and restructuring because At the same time you you have to resign the FAs you want to keep, ie Grimes, Weems, Peterson, etc. plus J. jones and the rest of the draftees. The question is do you have enough other cuts and restructures that you can can do to save the $$$ from Davis, Jenkins, Anderson to do the DE deal.Remember as Peyton said the new salary cap will be less than 2009. So you have to cut all the growth (about 10M) from 2009 to 2010 and still get all these contracts signed. Butudontseeme™
I'm just wondering if the plan actually IS to let some of our own guys walk? I'm not saying it is but I'm sure TD has already decided to whom they will make offers and how much is the max to each of those players. If the new CBA is approved and the lockout is lifted by this weekend, we will know better about what the intentions in free agency are. Knight of God
I wish I could find those old threads before the '07 draft where I said over and over how and why Anderson would be a bad pick and to treat him as though he were radioactive. Gotta work with what you got sometimes though. I consider myself pretty much an optimist and a giver of chances but his time is up here. I would prefer Johnson over Edwards though.

He is not the answer for this team as a starting DE obviously. I think he actually may be gold to a 3-4 def. team if coached up some. FalconFanSince1970
OK Farmer2 is a friend of mine. I feel compelled to defend him but honestly I am stomped. All I can think of is what he really meant is that we will be cap challenged, plus we have 11 of our own key free agents to deal so don't expect a big splash in free agency. Yeah. Yeah. That's what he meant to say.

midtownfalcon
Well I think that our "big move " this year happened on draft day...it was a big move and we have so many key guys that we need to resign from our own roster I'm not sure how big of a move we will make...I suspect most of our free agent signings will be to fortify positions where we arent able to resign our own guys...I am interested to see how some of the teams that are way over the cap are going to fix their situations...hopefully if nothing else if we do lose one of our key free agents we can pick up a salary cap casualty off of one of those teams to fill the hole. I'm not saying, we are going nuts and signing 15 guys or anything like that, but I do see a FA DE and CB (if Grimes walks), and possibly an o-line guy or two, depending on the situation there. To think that we are going to sit on our hands, in my opinion, is foolhardy.

Although Grimes is a prime candidate for a "poison pill" contract offer that would make it impossible to sign him, I don't think any team is going to want to give up a 1st round pick to sign him. In all honestly I'm ashamed to admit I completely forgot about Dunta last year. -_- Chalk that up to a lack of caffine, extreme boredom on the job and the first day back from vaca. But I'm still betting with approx 20 mil in cap space and a boatload of guys we need to bring back that we won't take a top tier FA. But I do deserve to be bashed for the obvious brain fart. Daddy's Home
Yes he has actually. Turner and Dunta were both big splash FA. I still hope that we do just focus on resignings.Dunta was not a big splash.Name the other teams that were pursuing him.Just because we overpaid does not mean he was a big splash.Just because a person does a "belly buster" into a swimming pool does not mean he knows what he is doing. Lots of noise, no results. Edited July 20, 2011 by Daddy's Home
texasfalconfan
all i know is they better have their plan worked out on the o line, cause after what they gave up for julio jones the last thing they need is redman throwing to him.
