Farmer2
This happens every year. This board gets geared up for free agency and then 12 hours into FA the board is about to implode. TD has NEVER made a big splash in free agency, so what makes you think he'll do it in a year when it's basically condensed to a week. Turner was not a huge FA pick up. He was a back up RB that became a great RB when given the opportunity. Gonzo was a trade days b/4 the draft. Based on TD's short history here, and given our financial picture along with the amount of our own guys we need to take care of I don't expect Aso, Charles Johnson, Edwards or any other top tier FA to be in a Falcons Uni anytime soon. I'd expect our FA signings to be depth guys, and the biggest one to be a nickel back or possibly an OLB if we lose Nic.

I still hope that we do just focus on resignings.
HouseofEuphoria
The Falcons are in a "win now" mode. I wouldnt count out a big splash FA yet.Although, with the shortened FA period, TD and Smitty better have thier plans finalized already and hands on the phones ready to call.Depending on who we lose in FA, we may have to sign several replacements. There could be at least one popular name in there.

In 3 offseasons he's twice signed the number 1 FA available at a position of need.
vel
TD has never made a big splash in Free Agency?Just last year, within 12 hours, it was reported that Dunta Robinson was going to be the Falcons new cornerback and one of the highest paid ones at that. Year before he trades for Tony G. 08 he signs Michael Turner to be our feature back and pays him like one. TD always makes one big splash. Guest mashburn
I kinda understand what you are saying. you are not saying the moves in FA were not OMG we got that guy. because not everyone knew who Turner was before we got him, and gonzalez was more so of a trade then a FA.but you forgot about Robinson. I know every year TD has gone after someone that has greatly helped the team. FA turner, trade gonzalez, FA robinson. I also like to add that I think TD is so happy he only had to waist picks for Julio Jones. Because now he can use money to sign a FA and he gets to keep players he may have not wanted to trade for.also I like to add TD can now get rid of some players to make some cap room. I stated in another post it would be smart to get rid of anderson and Davis, I believe it would make cap room of 6.5 million and other members on here think it is 9.5 million. Regardless we could get rid of them for 6.5 that could go towards Johnson.we need to get someone who does 3 times better then both of those players combined. we can finally pay someone who is worth it. instead of paying anderson and davis to get as just a good warm bench and maybe a sack or two for the season. I wanted to trade for him the year before.

Peyton
I agree that the Falcons won't make a "big splash" in FA this year, but saying that TD has never done so is pretty uninformed.

g-dawg
yeah, I don't know if farmer just had a "brain freeze" or what. Dimitroff makes one major move every year outside of the draft.2008 - Michael Turner, RB-San Diego (#1 RB in FA)2009 - Tony Gonzalez, TE-Kansas City (traded a 2010 2nd rounder)2010 - Dunta Robinson, CB-Houston (#1 CB in FA)what are you talking about Farmer? that is three major moves - one each year. Peyton
All of the big splashes the Falcons have made the last 3 years are pretty good reasons why they are not set up to do so this year.
g-dawg
All of the big splashes the Falcons have made the last 3 years are pretty good reasons why they are not set up to do so this year.I think this is lunacy. Please remember: Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith were all present the night the Falcons Defense did not make the Packers offense punt 1 time. Those three men have had to live with the disgust and embarrassment that the entire world saw that the Atlanta Falcons did not have a serious defense. While the defense should be better with more contributions from healthy Sean Weatherspoon and Peria Jerry - the fundamental lack of pass rush still persists. Our best passrusher - John Abraham - is 33yrs old and in the last year of his contract. Kroy Bierrman is a rotational player with some upside. The Atlanta Falcons can be a winning/playoff team with no additions but they won't be a playoff winning or superbowl team without an upgrade of the defensive line - and Blank/Dimitroff/Smith all know this fact. Captain Insano
TD has averaged bringing in one big signing every year that he has been here...whether it is in fa or in a trade...I don't seee why this year will be any different
falconidae
All of the big splashes the Falcons have made the last 3 years are pretty good reasons why they are not set up to do so this year. There's always a way- heard talk that teams will have a 3 million exemption from the salary cap for one player, Vets like Peterson, if the CBA has the same rules, get counted at a prorated scale on the salary cap. Ryan can be signed to an extension to spread the cap hit of the 22 mil out, Jones can be signed to a large bonus, low salary deal. Other vets can be cut or extended. If McKay and TD want to make a splash in FA, they can manage it.
Tandy
TD said very explicitly that there will be "explosive" players they are targeting in FA. He made it clear that they couldn't pick up what they wanted in the draft on defense - but that they would be going after them in FA.I don't think he would say it if they didn't mean it.I'm sure they have a game plan ready to go the instant the lockout is lifted. I, for one - am pumped!

HouseofEuphoria
I just hope its not Edwards.I dont think there's anything wrong with targeting Edwards. It would just have to be the right contract situation. We all know he's not a long-term solution at the position. It would still need work. But for 2-3 years he might be very valuable to our defense.I'm not sure we'll get him, but i wouldnt cry if we did. I'm just looking at the financial situation, and it will take sacrifices with other positions, probably several other positions, to make this happen.
