No. 3 Deion Sanders vs. No. 7 Tommy Nobis

Recommended Posts

Nobis played 100% of his career in a Falcons' uniform.

Nobis was drafted by the Oilers and the Falcons .....but choose the Falcons even though he was from Texas and played college ball for the Longhorns. (He still made the Texas Sports Hall of Fame)

Nobis had 294 tackles as a rookie in 1966. Unofficially the most tackles ever credited to one player, in a season, in NFL history.

Member of the front office for more than 30 years following an 11-year playing career.

Quotes

*Dolphins running back Larry Csonka: "I'd rather play against **** Butkus than Nobis."

*Cowboys legendary coach Tom Landry: "Nobis was as fast as most backs. In my opinion, he was a super player."

* Bears tight end Mike Ditka: "It was not one thing he did, it was everything he did. He was an old-fashioned linebacker. He didn't call attention to himself. He went out and played it."

*Coach Norm Van Brocklin pointed to Nobis' locker at the Stadium and proclaimed: "There's where our football team dresses." NFL players league-wide respected Nobis' efforts and abilities.

One of his most exciting games as a Falcon came on Monday Night Football in 1973 when the Falcons (then 6-3) faced the 9-0 Minnesota Vikings of Fran Tarkenton at Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium. "I got goose bumps coming out of the tunnel. That was the loudest and wildest crowd I'd ever seen." The Falcons responded with a 20-14 upset with Nobis making a fumble-producing tackle to save the win en route to the Falcons' first winning season.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Deion played 37% of his NFL career in a Falcons' uniform.

Deion played 112 games in a different uniform.

More on Mr. Falcon.

Nobis believes many voters, especially younger ones, aren't familiar with his career.

“People weren't aware of me because they weren't aware of the Falcons,” Nobis said. “We didn't win, didn't go to the playoffs.”

Thanks Sups. I was 2 when this man hung up his helmet but I'm glad he is affiliated with the Falcons. I can only support what I know and my era but think it's a shame he is not in the HOF. I'd be willing to support any effort that seeks to get Nobis in.

“It's a shame he's not in the Hall of Fame,” Kilmer said. “He was as good as any of the guys from that era, including Butkus. He could play the run as good as anybody I ever saw, he was good against the pass and, (expletive), he could hit. He had great leverage and was always in great position. Coming out of Texas, he had fundamentals. And he was smart. He called all the defenses. He could do it all.

“I'm astounded he is not in the Hall of Fame.”

“I admire and respect what Deion did,” Nobis said. “He had tremendous ability and confidence. And he came to play, and that's the kind of player I'd like to line up with.”

Well in all fairness, the vote is for FAVORITE FALCON, not BEST FALCON, MOST FAMOUS FALCON, etc. My personal favorite is Tommy Nobis, but heck, I'm 59 years old. Most of the board members are not nearly that old, never saw him play, and only know what they hear in legend.

If I was 22 years old, I'd likely be asking; "Tommy WHO?"

Like Tommy, I have nothing against Deion. He was great, as exciting as they come. I do lend some credibility to his short stay in Atlanta to the Smiths (Clampetts). Rankin Smith used the team for a tax write-off as much as anything and was a horrible owner.

Man, y'all, if we could have them BOTH on the same defense today,..........wow!

Well we did have the best defense of all-time in 77. That didn't work out too well. And coincidentally, it gets about as much press as Tommy Nobis.

I don't know if the "Grits Blitz" was the "Best of all-time". It had the fewest points allowed in a single season, a record that still stands today, but a smart QB's could and did rip that D apart and burn 'em big time. "Live by the sword, die by the sword."

Fewest points allowed in a 14-game season. Ravens and Bears (and Steelers) have an argument on their behalf, but not a concrete one. Those very good defenses went along with offenses that could score.

I'm simply playing Devil's Advocate on your "imagine that" hyperbole.

Then why are you voicing your opinion(this thread) w/o voting? Just hating and nothing more. You can argue against #21 but can't vote for Nobis?

So we have to neg Deion because he was better than the average athlete? What a crime.

After Dion beat Terrance Mathis, I didn't care about the poll anymore. I am just in this thread practicing my right to free speech regarding people who would vote for Deion Sanders as thier favorite Falcon.

The best game any QB had against the Falcons all year was 212 yards. That was Fran Tarkenton, and he threw 3 INTs.

The reason the Falcons defense dropped off dramatically after that is that the league changed the rules regarding defensive backs in 1978. In 1977, you could ride a WR all the way down the field as long as you never lost contact with him.

I think he was referring to 'who' was the smart QB that could 'rip apart that D'. The most points they gave up all season was 23 and 21. (those two games was 37% of their points allowed all season)

Those two games the Falcons allowed a net of 205 yards passing combined.

Correct. Too bad our offense sucked that year or we could have won it all. We actually got much closer the following year with an appearance in Dallas for the NFC Divisional Playoff, losing 27-20.

But we digress. Back to Deion Sanders vs. Tommy Whatshisname....:P
