Falconsfan567
Well, he is technically right about there being more to a pitcher than ERA, but I think he got a little carried away with labeling Linebrink the way he did considering what we ask him to do and how much we are (or aren't) paying him.But I have no faith whatsoever when I see Linebrink in the bullpen or in the game because there is always the chance that he could give up a ton of runs. You need more than 3 solid options out of the pen and when Linebrink is your 4th best option in the pen you have the problem we have with Venters and Kimbrel pitching WAY to many games. Speaking of pitching why did Fredi refuse to use Scott Proctor tonight instead of Linebrink? Is he waiting to use Proctor in another extra innings game? If so he needs to be knocked in the head with a bat!

Linebrink is probably the least replace of he, Proctor, and Sherrill, and he's been good for us at times this year, especially with the absence of O'Flaherty and Venters for a stretch. And there is always a chance any pitcher can give up a ton of runs, that's the nature of the game. Numbers say he has been what we needed him to be, and he's only really had a more enhanced role for the ballclub because of Moylan's injury. It's like you are trying to use that as a reason why I should be satisfied with Linebrink. Sorry it's not happening. Sure the Braves are in a good position but if the players and coaches and fans had more faith in guys like Linebrink and Sherrill then we would use they more often and give O'Ventrel the rest they need. You do know that Venters and Kimbrel are in the top 5 most games pitch this year right? I mean we just got done playing a series not that long ago against the Orioles where we had to give Venters the entire 3 games off to rest because he had pitched in to many games in a row. Add in the fact that Fredi hardly lets the starters pitch more than 6 innings (although it seems over the past couple of weeks he's loosened the reings a little bit) and we have to use the bullpen that much more. It's like last Saturday against the Phillies when he told the announcers before the game he didn't want to use Venters but he used them anyway because he decided to pull Hanson after 7 innings even though Hanson had only thrown 94 pitches and was cruising. He routinely let's JJ and Hudson throw 105-110 pitches but never let's Hanson throw more than 95-100 pitches and that's the the main reason why Hanson usually only pitches 6 innings instead of 7 because he naturally throws more pitches than JJ and Hudson. Hanson is a horse and Fredi needs to turn him loose and let him throw 110-115 pitches. As Don Sutton once said "he's a big boy. he can handle it." ATLBrave
A huge reason why Venters and Kimbrel have pitched so much is because we're winning, and because of the way we are winning. Sure, they both probably could have done without a few of their appearances, but for the most part, they have been in during close games, where they are needed. As for why I keep bringing up other teams' situations, it's because most teams don't have a great 1-5 or 6 in their pens, so no, you don't need to have an extremely deep bullpen. It's a luxury, not a necessity, and it's not even close to the reasons I was giving to be satisfied with Linebrink. I did that with the numbers. That last part is also something completely separate, and is something I don't necessarily disagree with. I can understand why Fredi took caution with Hanson in his last start, considering he was coming of shoulder tendinitis not too long ago. ATL Fan in the DMV
Not sure how this topic devolved into this. I will add my two cents quickly:I have said time and time again that our starters need to pitch deeper into ballgames. It looks like they may be doing so lately, along with Fredi's recent decisions to allow his SP to go an extra inning/stay in to finish the inning. This could help rest some of our overused bullpen going forward.Of our bullpen, we have clear tiers:First Tier, The Elites: Venters, Kimbrel, and EOF. They also happen to be the most consistent of the relievers we have. Unfortunately, they are overused and are on track to reach IP totals and Appearances that you don't want any reliever to come close to reaching.Injured-But-Still-Good: This next tier comprises RP's that are on the mend. They aren't as good as the above trio, but they are/were good enough to trust in tight situations. Having them unavailable to us in the bullpen hurts in many ways, but our overall bullpen strength is a a testament to just how good our elite RP are.The next group consists of Martinez (since banished), Sherrill and Linebrink. These guys have been up and down (and save for Martinez, were flat out awful to begin the season). Since then, they have rounded out their season performances to about average. You probably won't be getting any warm and fuzzy feelings when they come in, but they, especially lately, take care of business.Next, is Gearrin. He is a poor man's Moylan. He is raw, but has looked promising at times. Needs to pitch in more low leverage situations (tonight's would have been perfect).Last Tier: Proctor. He probably doesn't belong on an MLB roster...especially ours. As for the game, it was a great game all the way around. Uggla's "hit" they ruled an error was unfortunate. But boy did he look confident at the plate today. Heyward still chopping stuff in teh ground...I wonder if he will ever get back to being the line drive hitter he was in the minors. As for the rest, Freeman is the man, Prado is back, and even Gonzo got a hit. It's too bad the opposing pitcher will get cut for allowing a hit to Gonzo. What a shame.Hope they saved some offense for tomorrow and Sunday's game (the one I'm going to)!
