I really don't care what kind of contract he is signed to, he sucks and needs to go down to AA. There are pitchers in our minor league system who are better hitters than he.

He cannot be optioned to the minor leagues with the team getting his permission.

This thread on the heels of one of his best (No it was his best) game of the season. Really? 2 walks, 1 homerun and a double to the opposite field. That's not good enough for you?

So you're willing to allow a single night of production to erase 4 months? I would love to work for you.

Tonight makes it 2 great games in a row for Uggla and the best part is that it came at home. When you really look at it he wasn't nearly as bad the past month or so when the Braves were on the road (see at Houston, San Diego and Seattle) but then the Braves would come home and he would go back to being awful.

2 great games out of 4 months. Color me unimpressed. I mean I voted for him for our little message board Player of the Game thing cuz I felt bad for him but come on. Lets not all whip out the jimmy sticks and start pulling oil just yet.

Give me at least a MONTH of .300+ hitting and 6-10 HRs and I'll jump on the the Dan Uggla Might Be Jesus Now wagon. But only after NO LESS than a months worth of elite level production.

Well that's your business but the rest of us are happy that he's put together 2 great games in a row and both at home no doubt.

These last two games have been Uggla's best this year. And although that by itself isn't saying a heckuva whole lot, I have seen great strides from him (more compact-less loopy swing, a drastic change in patience at the plate).

The key though is building on these last two games, recognizing WHY he has been successful, and now manifesting that into consistently good results...instead of the consistently bad results we'd get after a rare great game from his so far this year.

You got to start with 2 good games to get to a productive month. He is turning it around.

To be honest, his BA is HOT GARBAGE, but....his production is not terrible. Homeruns, RBI, and runs scored...he is not as awful as it may seem.

I am more concerned with Heyward's lack of PRODUCTION than Uggla's BA.

That being said, I think both will work through problems and get better in the second half.

Heyward is ahead of Uggla in average, OBP, and slugging. Not that Heyward has been good the first half, but when he's been in the line-up, he's been more productive than Uggla.

Hopefully they both finally kick it into gear and have strong 2nd halfs. If they do, and barring some other injury bug, the Braves should be sitting pretty at the end.

Not since Heyward came back off the DL. He's hardly done a thing.

But I think Dan Uggla has turned the corner. Over his past 6 games (6-game hitting streak) he's posted a slash line of .364/.545./.909. Sure it's a very, very, very small sample size but the turnaround has to start somewhere and maybe the past 6 games has been it. Also here's something that was posted on the Capitol Avenue blog on July 8th.

Uggla Trending Up

By Ben Duronio | July 8, 2011

The difficulties Dan Uggla has had at the plate in 2011 are well documented. The struggling all-offense second basemen has provided very little offense, aside from the occasional long ball. His performance so far has left a sour taste in most mouths, especially considering the fact that the offense as a whole has under-performed. However, things are starting to change.

On June 7, I wrote an article titled “Dan Uggla Needs To Strikeout More.” Since that date, he has hit for a .762 OPS with 30 strikeouts, 12 walks, and 12 extra base hits. His slash line of .213/.299/.468 is still poor, but there is production to be found in that line. His power has improved, as half of his 14 homers have come since June 8. He’s added five doubles as well, and the isoOBP of .086 is right in line with his carer mark of .085.

The important thing is that Uggla has gotten back to what made him the $62 million second basemen that he is. He is hitting home runs, walking, and striking out. At his best, he is a three true outcome guy. That’s what he is doing, and that’s at least a minor reason why the Braves’ are 19-8 over that span.

The walk rate since June 8 is 10.3% compared to 10.6% for his career. The strikeout rate is 25.9% compared to 25.7% for his career. The home run per plate appearance rate is 6% compared to 4.5% for his career. This is the Uggla the Braves’ were looking for, and if his BABIP during this stretch were to have been his career .291 rather than .226, this post would have been written a few weeks ago.

Using even more arbitrary endpoints, over the past four series Uggla is hitting .225/.354/.550. That’s all you can ask for out of your best power hitter. Uggla’s season ending numbers will be much worse than anticipated before the season began, but the offense may have landed the biggest acquisition in the league as Uggla reverts back to his career norms.

True. Which makes me think he's still not really healthy. That said, since he's come off the DL, Heyward has gone .244/.313/.400. Uggla during that same period has gone .198/.270/.451.

They've both stunk. They also both had some decent games just before the break, so hopefully they'll both continue to trend upward toward their expected production.

Escobar/Gonzalez

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but reading this article makes me wonder what is the future of the Atlanta Braves short-stop position. Do we have any young talent that could replace Gonzalez in the near or immediate future? Do the Braves deal Gonzalez in a trade, and if so, who would they go after?

Just my thoughts on what I think is an area of need for the Braves. As the article points out, Gonzalez had the best year of his career (statistically) last year and to believe those numbers would translate into this year is unjustified.

On the other hand, do ya'll think we keep Gonzalez for the long-term?

Thanks all.

No, we will not keep Gonzalez long-term. Tyler Pasternicky, a SS prospect we got with Gonzalez in the Escobar deal, will likely step in at some point next season. The Braves may attempt to keep Gonzalez for one more season to caddy the position. If Gonzalez doesn't want to sign for just a one-year deal, I expect the Braves to let him walk.

Thanks. Glad to hear that. I get so frustrated when Gonzalez comes to the plate. Without fail, at every at bat, he swings on the breaking ball pitch that is way outside and has no chance of making contact.

Is Pasternicky playing with the Gwinnett Braves now? What kind of hitter is he? Solid fielder?
