News on Nicholas

Recommended Posts

Atlanta linebacker Stephen Nicholas held a youth football camp in Jacksonville recently. That brought out the media and an obvious question.

Would Nicholas be interested in returning to his home town to play for the Jaguars? After all, indications are the Jaguars will be in the market for linebacker help whenever free agency opens and Nicholas is expected to be an unrestricted free agent. His local ties and Jacksonville’s needs have brought speculation about this for months.

Nicholas didn’t shoot down any possibility and said he’d like to explore free agency and what opportunities are available. But the strongest thing Nicholas said was that there’s a “big’’ chance he ends up staying in Atlanta. :)

That’s pretty interesting because there’s no guarantee of a starting job there for Nicholas. The Falcons drafted Sean Weatherspoon last year and he replaced Nicholas in the starting lineup. Veteran Mike Peterson was the starter at the other outside spot last season and he’s also a free agent.

Most have just assumed Peterson, a team leader and a favorite of coach Mike Smith, automatically will re-sign with the Falcons. This makes me wonder if Nicholas knows something the rest of us don’t? Or maybe Nicholas would be content to stay a backup in Atlanta?

I think a friend of a friend of Dimitroff has been talking to a friend of a friend of Nick's agent. B)

Nich is solid, and would be a viable regular starter for us...Peterson doesnt have the range to play in most base packages anymore, Wire is not a starter, and Adkins certainly isnt a starter.

Peterson is done. I cant see how he started over Nicholas last year. They have to sign Nic.
