This aggressive approach that Parrish and Gonzalez have put into place doesn't seem to be working. I'm not saying the aggressive approach is a bad thing, but it's just not working with our group of hitters.

Any dumb thing in baseball seems to be excused with "at least he was aggressive". Thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple? Caught stealing? Swinging at pitches out of the strike zone? Bunting with a real hitter?Hey, as long as you "stay aggressive" it's OK.

It's a basic game. When you're on offense, you don't want to get out. A team only gets 27 outs a game to score runs. If being "aggressive" costs your team more outs than it does score runs, then your hitters are just being dumb.

In summary:

Smart: taking pitches out of the strike zone for balls

Dumb: swinging at pitches out the strike zone

Smart: Taking the extra base when the baserunner is certain to be able to get there

Dumb: Going for the extra base and hoping that the defense bobbles it

Smart: Not giving away precious outs just to advance a runner 90 feet unless a truly awful hitter is at the plate (like a pitcher)

Dumb: Using a hitter that could actually do something productive with a plate appearance (defined as "anything other than getting out") and forcing him to sacrifice bunt ("getting out").

Awesome post but the only thing I would take issue with is taking the extra base only when the baserunner is certain to be able to get there.

In my opinion if you THINK you can make it then you go for it. There's no way to be certain. If the dude laser beams a Nelson Cruz-like throw and guns you down there is nothing you can do but tip your cap, but what are the chances he makes a [Tomei] Dead on balls [/Tomei] accurate throw like that? The way I see it, in the most basic of equations, you've got a 50/50 shot seeing as how the only two options you've got in trying to stretch something is being out or being safe.

If you're Brian McCann you obviously settle for the double. If you're someone like Jose Reyes though, you gotta have 3-bag vision up at all times.

Beachy and McLouth playing w/ Gwinnett tonight. No surprise to see McLouth in LF. Beachy will throw 80-90 pitches.

Fredi Gonzalez is willing to try any lineup to score more runs, said he's considering batting pitcher 8th when McLouth returns

Looks like Schafer may stay in CF when McLouth returns.

Just great. Now Hanson is hurt.

From Mark Bowman: Hanson has been scratched from Friday start due to right-shoulder tendinitis, Randall Delgado to start tomorrow vs. Texas.

I've wondered all season if something was up with Hanson. Hopefully he'll be back soon, but I admit to being eager for a look at Delgado.
