midtownfalcon
So I tried to post this in the pure football section but it would not let me start a thread there...got into an argument with one of my friends whos opinion I most respect in sports in general about Wes Welker and was curious what you educated folks think...my argument is that you cant take the fact that Welker has been facing at best the second best DB on the opposing team while having the benefit of having one of the top 2 QB's in the league and of course one of the top coaches in the league out of consideration when it comes to his stats...he has put up amazing numbers statistically but I think he benefits from those factors whereas my friend argues that hes an elite WR in the league...I just think that if Welker faced the #1 DB every week his numbers would be a lot lower...just wondering what you folks thought...thanks. GEORGIAfan
you have to be a member of Pure Football to post in pure football. And from my experience it is overrated. I have been here longer than i care to admit, but since i have been here Pure Football has been weak/a dead zone. Now to the argument.I agree with you that he is not elite and he relies on a Number 1 wide to be productive. I think this season proves your point. Randy Moss got traded and his numbers fell off. And After they got Deion Branch, you see that their numbers correlate. When Deion has a big game, then Welker has a big game. Welker needs a guy to spread the field and get defenders out of the box to be effective. I think to be Elite you have to rely on yourself to get your numbers, and not others spreading the field and taking pressure off you. And you made the point that he has Brady. Brady has done great things with unknown wides and TEs. Look at aaron hernadez this year.

Smiler11
Welker is an elite slot WR, but he's never going to be a true no. 1 receiver. I would never consider him a top 5 receiver in the league.

I would never consider him a top 5 receiver in the league. this is what i say. He is probably the Best slot/ #2 guy in the league. not quite the alpha wr, but dominant in the dink and dunk routes.Puts up solid FF #s every year
pzummo
I guess it depends on how you are comparing him. I would argue that he is an elite slot WR. You have different WR's that fill different roles. He is not an XY WR. So comparing him as such is like comparing a MLB to a WLB. They fill completely different roles. How many WR's are better than him out of the slot? That to me makes him elite.Elite #1 WR's are not necessarily great out of the slot. I wouldn't say there are elite #2 WR's because their role is similar to a #1, and the #1 could fill that role. But slot WR's are different roles that are filled by a completely different type of player. The same goes for SS vs FS. I do think you could make the case for elite change of pace backs. For instance, Sproles was not an elite HB, but he was an elite change of pace back.

He plays decently as a #2, but a good deal of his production comes from sliding inside in 3 receiver sets. I don't think he would match that kind of production anywhere else. Guest mashburn
Lol the guy has tom brady as his qb. Tom made that short guy look good. Tom even made branch look good. any offense player beside brady and the o line are nothing. Moss looked decent before they let him go, and moss looked horrible with every team he went to play for after they let him go. I could only imagine that wes would be nothing more then a bench warmer. AtlantaFanatic
Well of course those factors play a part in how good his numbers are. If Welker was lining up against Revis and I was throwing him that ball, He would have junk numbers. Stats truly are not all they are cracked up to be. Miller2Rison
Yall dont remember him too well as a punt returner in Miami huh, he was pretty good not quite as explosive as dwight but was decent, hes a good player but yeh i dont think he'd be a good x WR

In 2006, Wes was the leading receiver for the Dolphins and had a career game against the Pats with JOEY HARRINGTON as his QB. Many ppl think that's why Bill scooped him up that offseason. Many ppl think that's why Bill scooped him up that offseason.no he wasn't & not really. Bill liked Wes as a returner. Welker had 77 yards that game and one catch was for a gain of about 30 yards when Ellis Hobbs slipped. the Pats were hardly worried about Welker, I think he might have got about 12 yards the second time they played that year
Rai
he's not elite, he's athletically limited (small and not fast) to be a full-time starting receiver. he's a good fit for the slot though and is purely a system receiver, imo. he can get separation good on the short yard routes but he's not going to burn anyone. he probably runs the quick out better than any receiver in the league and has a knack for picking up the yards needed to move the chains which is why he's so valuable to the Patriots' offence and what they do. if he came out in the draft today, i wouldn't take him in the first, second or third round. SBorBust
no he wasn't & not reallyYeah he was...from patriots.com " Led the Dolphins with a then career-high 67 receptions. That's the same role he's playing with the Pats now...extension of the running game passing. I'm not trying make an argument that he's a number one threat...I'm suggesting that he wouldn't be a benchwarmer and he can produce without Brady contrary to what mashburn said.
