Soon to be stars: Kroy Biermann

Many see defensive end as a massive need position still for the Falcons. While I wouldn’t be critical if the Falcons were aggressive in signing a guy like Charles Johnson or Ray Edwards to complement John Abraham, I suggest that the pairing of Kroy Biermann and Jamaal Anderson is more than adequate opposite Abraham.

Anderson seems to have hit his ceiling as a solid base end who plays the run well but is a limited pass-rusher, but I feel Biermann is on the cusp of breaking out.

Even if the Falcons were to spend big money on a free-agent defensive end, Biermann still could have a major impact as a rotational player and the likely successor to Abraham. And given Abaraham’s age, cutting down his snap count would be a wise move to keep all pass-rushers fresh as Atlanta prepares for what it hopes will be a deep playoff run.

Biermann is a tough guy who plays the run well, and while he isn’t the biggest end, he can hold the point and force outside runs back to the middle of the field. He also makes plays in pursuit thanks to better-than-advertised speed and a motor that never stops.

Rushing the passer is what Biermann does best, though. He has yet to record more than five sacks in a season and had just three last season, but his overall disruptiveness shows up on film.

Some might take the glass-half-empty view and say Biermann comes up short when getting after the quarterback, but in reality he is creating pressure that forces the quarterback to move his feet when he doesn’t want to and results in poor throws. And he should only get better with experience.

Biermann already has three years of NFL experience under his belt, and at only 25 years old and he should continue to develop his skills. He’s also played in every game in his three seasons, and it won’t be long before his production matches his potential.

Beirmann is a RE though if you ask me.

Rotate him with Abe since he plays the run well, then let him take over for Abe after the season, and his contract is up.

still beef up the LE spot with Ray Edwards.

I agree. I think we can extend Abe for a season or 2 as his career winds down though. He hasnt been injured for the past 4 years and is still playing at a very high level.

I wish I could agree, but I don't...

This sounds like another "never let the facts interfere with a god story" article. And the facts are Biermann is undersized, not very strong, is not sacking the QB and is frequently a step or two short of sacking the QB not because he is on the verge of being a "star" but because he is a step or two short of EVER being a star.

He's a back-up, rotational DE at best with solid special teams skills--kind of like Finneran was as a 4th WR--for us; a future star at DE I predict he will never be--I hope he proves me wrong!

Sometimes I think writers come up with stuff like this not because of facts or sound reasoning, but just in case the unlikely prediction occurs he/whe will like like a genious. I find this disingenuous.

I think you are dead wrong. It takes about three years for a DE to develop in the NFL. he is only going to get better.

I think he is right. I bought into the KB71 hype last year. He let me down. I think he is average, and that is across from one of the best DE's in the NFL. I think that he has benefited from playing across from Abe, and if we get someone who can do it on their own, then we will have a better pass rush.

KB71 is serviceable, but nothing overly special. Maybe in a few years I will be wrong, but for now we need another DE.

Guy is a 5th round draft choice out of Div 2 ..... This was his first full year as a starter. I'm not saying he is All Pro, but you can bet there are alot of teams who would love to have him. He has improved every year he has been here. Helll it took even Mario Williams a couple years to figure it out as well .......

It amazes me how so many here are ready to give up on a great young talent .....I guess most of you are too young to remember Pat Kerney who many said the same about him as the Beerman detractors do now ....... many of you considered Roddy a " bust ' or an ' average " WR ....glad you boofoos are not running the team ....

Who has said anything about "giving up" on him, goober? My comments were specific to the topic title predicting that Biermann was a "star" in the making.

Glad you are not teaching reading comprehension!

Disingenuous would be quite the stretch...the article sights his ability to be around the ball, and I think his QB pressure #'s will tell that tale. JA had a similar problem with his numbers in 2009.

And not very strong? I'm not sure where that information is coming from, because he might be the strongest defensive end on the team.

Perhaps in the typical 4-3, where we would have a typical 330lbs NT, too, then I would agree. So far, Atlanta has brought in 2 defensive ends in the draft, both fast but undersized. Tampa 2 requires the smaller, faster DE's. Look at the Colts DL. No fatties in the middle, and small speedsters who blow up the big tackles. I'd take Edwards, but not sure if the scheme requires someone his size.
