HBO: Game of Thrones

There's been virtually zero character development though, IMO. It seemed like Bennett was the killer, then he was "redeemed;" that's about it. Linden and Holder have remained the same throughout the series, bumbling through investigation in basically the same inept manner every episode.

GOT, on the other hand, has shown the development of nearly every single character, both major and minor. Its writing is clearly superior.

I think the screw-ups in the investigation do add to the realism. Real life problems messing up work decision- making, although the bumbling also helps keep the murderer's identity safe til season's end.

It's 40 minutes into this week's episode of the Killing, and the entire 40 minutes has been devoted to Linden's missing effeminate son. Not a single mention of Rosie besides the dumb scene in the casino. What happened to this show? It's awful.

GOT was freaking awesome. Next few episodes will be amazing.

Drogo fight was insane, I loved the choreography of it. How easily he just moved around the swipes and swings of the other guy. Syrio fight was sweet too. Martin should definitely write more episode scripts, because this was probably the 2nd best episode of the series. He's scheduled to write episode 9 of Season 2 as well.

That scene was great, the choreography was outstanding for that scene. My favorite scene was probably when the head knight of the Kingsguard was relieved of duty.

I hope Syrio made it out of there alive.

The dude who played Drogo, Jason Momoa, is Lisa Bonet's (from The Cosby Show and A Different World) baby daddy.

Hodor....

This viewers guide has helped me a lot:

So did this glossary and character gallery:

Sorry for not linking those before, I've been using them since week 1.

Forgot to mention that Alan Sepinwall is the best TV critic for GoT or any other noteworthy show. I've been reading his stuff since he joined the NJ Star Ledger around Season 3 or 4 of The Sopranos.

He has the best discussion about GoT, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, Justified and even comedies like Community, Curb and 30 Rock. Plus his work on The Sopranos, The Wire and Deadwood was simply amazing. He also reviews less serious and noteworthy fare.

This was Alan's blog before he joined HitFix last year and it contains links to his older reviews:

I read somewhere that the season adaptations will go:

Season 1: A Game Of Thrones

Season 2: A Clash Of Kings

.... Confirmed for 2 seasons, but if they go further it would break down:

Seasons 3 & 4: A Storm Of Swords

.... Book 3 is the biggest book in the series at over 1,100 pages and 80 chapters, so there's no way they'd be able to do it in one season, even if they added 2 extra episodes to make it 12.

Season 5: A Feast For Crows

Season 6: A Dance With Dragons

.... These two books were originally one, but the size of the manuscript turned into the publisher for A Feast For Crows was so big that they were forced to split it into 2 different books that take place at the same time, from different perspectives.

Season 7: The Winds Of Winter

Season 8: A Dream Of Spring

.... These books haven't even been written yet so there's a possibility that they could be split into more than 1 season a piece.

I hope HBO can sustain the astronomical cost of producing this show and it makes a run through the whole series and wraps up the story. I'd be very disappointed if it got the Rome and Deadwood treatment and ends up cancelled due to budget cost.

This week's episode of The Killing made me think the producers signed a deal for X number of episodes, planned it all out, but at the last minute, the network made them produce X+1 episodes, so in protest they wrote in this past Sunday's throwaway show that doesn't advance the plot one bit. I thought Breaking Bad did the same thing with the "fly" episode in season 3.

I am really enjoying Game of Thrones, but it is moving too fast in order to keep with the 13 episode story arc.

I wish they could slow it down and get into more depth.

I complained earlier that we never got any character development in the Killing; well, we got it last night. However, it should have happened 5 weeks ago. There was no need to spend 4 straight episodes on the Bennet Red Herring; they could have cut it down to two and had the character development of Linden and Holder much sooner and advanced the plot with only 3 episodes left in the season.

I enjoyed the Fly episode in Breaking Bad. There was little plot advancement there too, but it had the trademark BB dark humor and showed Walt truly starting to lose it. Last night's Killing humanized Linden, but wasn't as effective as the Fly episode in BB, IMO.

Game Of Thrones Season 1 is only scheduled for 10 episodes.

I actually like it a lot more like that. It cuts out all the need for "filler episodes" ie. whatever that crap was last night on The Killing, and allows them to be 100% focused on the main story at all times.

Books often times use a lot of filler pages and filler chapters too. I don't need to know a 2-page intricate description of a bedpost or a 3-page description of a knife slowly coming towards someone's throat.

The writers and directors have nailed every single episode of GoT so far because they have perfectly balanced plot and perspective.

Last night's episode of The Killing reminded me very much of the Expose episode from Lost if any of you watched that show. Completely out of nowhere with zero plot advancement at all.

I agree and its refreshing. I haven't read the books, but I had NO idea such huge events as the death of the King and impending war would happen as quickly as they have. In other shows, there would have been 8 episodes of Ned and Robert arguing over things before anything ever happened. I love how this show is paced.

I loved how the King was wounded, and then subsequently died off-screen. It was so shocking and sudden that I couldn't process it until the end of the episode.

Makes me think that nobody is safe and I definitely think ole Ned is a goner.

I think so, and I think one of his daughters dies as well, probably by the end of season 1. I assume in the books different characters rise to prominence once the main characters die.

Also, and this is total conjecture, but I think the Khaleesi will give birth to a girl.

If she gives birth at all. Did you see the previews for next week's episode after the credits? That sheep-priestess chick that Dany had clean Drogo's wound is holding a knife and then it cuts to a scene of Dany all bloody being carried by Ser Mormont. Made me think that chick stabs her or something, but who knows, probably just a red herring to get people hyped up.

I saw that. I almost hope that happens just to see what Drogo does. The punishment for the attempted poisoner was kind of weak though.

Well I'm assuming he eventually fell and was dragged the rest of the way until he died. That's a terrible punishment if you think about it. The entire time you're walking tied to this horse you KNOW you're going to eventually get exhausted and lose your balance. You know that they're just going to drag you around until you die. That would suck worse than having your head lobbed off or your throat slit where you don't feel much pain after a few seconds.

Yeah, knowing you were a dead man eventually, wouldn't you just run up and try and mount the queen, thus earning a head-lopping.
