buongiornoalexlanger asked: If anyone has problems imagining just how epic Balerion was, and Drogon's potential, like I did, they can just watch the intro to the Hobbit. According to people with far more time on their hands than me, Smaug is around the same size, or smaller, than Balerion. (It depends on if a 12 meter long head could swallow a 9 meter tall mammoth whole.) Kinda puts into perspective just how terrifying Dany's power can be, if the dragons survive. It almost makes what Drogon did to Astapor in GOT seem cute.

In addition, you can wait a couple months and read “The Princess and the Queen,” as some of us have already done. #sorrynotsorry

Random thought with about 10 chapters left in ADWD:

Amazing the way GRRM is able to make the reader become so invested in the characters yet at the same time change the way the reader feels about them. for me personally:

Cersei, Jaime, Sansa, Caitlin, even Dany. But perhaps no more so then:

ADWD spoilers

Theon.... went from hardly being more then a prop, to being the most hated character for me, even more so then joffrey, to actually pulling for him

Yeah I am definitely rooting for Theon, but with the realization is literally and figuratively a broken man.

I know the show couldn't risk not having the actor around for like 4 seasons in a row, but I think they jumped the gun with the Ramsay torture scenes in the show.

I don't know, I mean I think grrm was able to write how destroyed he was without actually going into the torture since we were able to read his thoughts and see how differently he sees the world now, but it would have been more difficult to have this white haired, balding, 80 lb man a few years after his last appearance in the show and say look here is theon again. Btw the transformation of theon through adwd from reek to ghost of winterfell to Prince of winterfell back to theon greyjoy was brilliant writing.

Yeah, there's not a great way on the show to depict Theon's flashbacks of his torture during his POV chapters without flat out showing it.

GRRM's writing of Theon in ADWD is some of his best work. I love the "My name is Reek, it rhymes with_____." He uses pretty clever rhyming with those lines.

halflingprince asked: Good morning, Mindset. Feel free to answer privately if this is dumb! 1. I'm almost finished with the 5th ASOIAF book (yay- and I have questions for you about Bran but I want to finish the series first to see if it answers my questions) but wanted to know, are there any canon short stories or previews from Winds of Winter available for reading? I saw you mention something about a short story coming out soon, and wondered if there have been any previous ones. 2. I really love your blog and URL:)

nobodysuspectsthebutterfly:

Don’t worry, it’s not a dumb question! And yes, there are previews of TWOW chapters out there; mostly off of GRRM’s site, but some as transcripts from readings at conventions.

Currently the chapter on GRRM’s website is
. Also someone made a very helpful copy of the chapter previously on his site,
. Both chapters are highly recommended and really fascinating (Theon especially IMO). Also,
, which includes links to transcripts. Not included (yet) is
, the most recent convention reading.

And there’s going to be another preview chapter when the US paperback of ADWD (finally) comes out at the end of October. Hopefully it’ll be something new, not one of the ones we’ve already seen or heard from. But I do not have high hopes that it will be Sansa or Arya as the people I know want to see; I definitely do not expect to see Dany or (hahaha) Jon.

The short story coming out in December is “The Princess and the Queen”, in
. It doesn’t have much to do with TWOW (except as a historical example), it takes place about 170 years before AGOT. It was originally going to be a sidebar in The World of Ice and Fire, but GRRM just… kind of… kept writing… till it got long enough to be its own story. You can see a preview of it
.

You may see lists of these novellas: “Blood of the Dragon”, “Path of the Dragon”, and “Arms of the Kraken”, but they’re not anything you haven’t read — they collect Dany’s chapters from AGOT and ASOS, and the Greyjoy chapters from AFFC.

Also, in case you didn’t know, there are the Dunk and Egg short stories, which take place about 100 years before ASOIAF. I have info on how to acquire them
, and note the graphic novel adaptations are going to be reprinted starting in November.

Hope that helps, and thanks! Look forward to your Bran questions.
