Julio Jones trade: A fair analysis

Recommended Posts

I'm not beating a dead horse. I just wanted to put in my two cents. How do you put a price on one of the best wide receivers to come out of college football in the past decade? You use your calculator and the NFL draft value chart. What we received was a 5th overall from the Browns, which is worth 1620 points. We gave up a 27th overall worth 680 points, a 59th overall worth 310 points, and a 124th overall worth 48 points. Assuming we will be picking at the same spots next year (fair assumption--yes, we're a better team, but our schedule is harder), we gave up a 27th overall next year, which is worth 20% less than this year's first rounder because those players will take one more year to get onto the field, so it's worth 544 points, and a 124th overall worth 38 points. Do the math! What we gave up adds up to exactly 1620 points. From this point of view, the trade was exactly fair. But when Peter King interviewed 7 respected GMs in the NFL, he straight up asked them whether or not they thought Atlanta overpaid for Julio and 6 outta the 7 said yes. A scenario to support this view is Broncos traded a proven WR in Brandon Marshall to the Miami Dolphins for only 2 second round picks. Cardinals dealt a proven veteran like Boldin to the Ravens for a 3rd and a 4th rounder. It is not worth it to take high risks on WRs (especially unproven ones) because they aren't heavily involved in each play. It's true that we weren't going to be able to draft a player of Julio's caliber anytime soon unless we somehow finished 2-14, which is improbable considering we have a talented team. However, maybe we could have gotten a player like Larry Fritzgerald or even a Sydney Rice, who maybe just as effective, for a lot cheaper when FA opened. Maybe we did overpay. Only time will tell. Even TD and coach Smith aren't perfect. Either way it's great to have a GM, a coach, and an owner who aren't shy to take big gambles that they think are the best for the team. Hindsight is 20/20, so taking these gambles takes guts. For that, they have my respect. As fans it is our duty to critique our FO and our players. But for now I'm very happy with the job they are doing and with the pick because it seems reasonably likely we got a good player for a long time. B)

A little off topic but what does he do for money? Is Roddy spotting him some cash, does his agent give him money or does his mom drop him off at practice? It's gotta suck being that high of a draft pick and not being able to buy a car or house

And buy the way Julio had me sold at that combine!!

Pretty sure his agent or parents/family are taking good care of him until he signs his contract.

Most rookie free-agents get loans to tie them over until they receive their first paycheck. Dez Bryant actually got in trouble with this because he never paid his loans back.

What everyone must realize is there may be no precedent to accurately appraise this deal.

Remember, the draft date was solid and by the time the draft came up there was absolutely no ability for Atlanta to consider any free agent DE's or WR's. If fact there may not be until the CBA is settled, or even reverting back to 2010 rules thus eliminating certain FA's. Otherwise, they may have gone after both Larry Fitzgerald and/or a Charles Johnson--but what were/are their options?

To make sure they were not completely shut out by addressing what was a targeted need the Falcon's chose to get bold and take advantage of the only option to do so--the draft. Regardless of the other GM's opinions and all the hypothetical scenarios, and the points per draft selection, the Falcon's ignored the status quo and courageously went and got what they needed and as a fan and STH I happen to appreciate such bold, courageous and proactive decisions.

And even though I personally wanted Peterson from LSU, or the Miller from Texas A&M--or any game changer on defense--I think the Falcons picked up the all around best WR prospect since Johnson from GT. I am excited about this choice, especially if somehow we acquire or develop another DE and DB.

I think it's a fair trade because of two reasons. The first is that I'm not an owner nor am I a member of the Falcon's hierarchy. I don't make the decisions for them. It's my job to simply enjoy the team. The second is that I can remember two players we recently chose with two of our top picks... JA98 and Jimmy Williams. Julio may bust and I'm not saying JA is a total waste. I just believe that Julio has a great shot of making this trade worth it to us.

It sucks to not have any money coming in, and it sucks if he is struggling to afford to live, but I think to say "it sucks not being able to buy a car or house" is a bit much. I'm sure a lot of people in the world are successful, qualified, talented etc and aren't in the position to buy a car or a house! I think the worst thing for all the rookies is that they're still having to wait before they can get to work, get coached, prepare for games etc.

The trade will work only if we can get Vick back. There's no other QB in the league that could get the ball down field like the great one.

Just thinking about his long slender legs, tight buttocks and sweet smile are getting me aroused, I need a cold shower.

Tasteless.

False impersonation is one thing. But to step it up like that?

Fast becoming a hallmark of the decorum around here.

Completely uncalled for.

I don't speak Swahili.

I think what he is saying is name 10 teams that made a similar trade and it didn't work out for them. You don't have a proper sample size on which you can base the trade as unsuccessful yet you're complaining that this is a bad trade. In another words, name 10 teams that made a similar trade and are were adversely affected by it. Adversely affected enough to not win a SB sternly because of this type of trade.
