Dago
an agent's opinion on why a deal has not gotten donehttp://www.nationalfootballpost.com/An-agents-answer-to-Why-dont-we-have-football.htmlInterestingly, I was surprised to learn that the lawyers and judges I spoke to during and after the symposium were collectively in agreement that there is a lot of danger with the NFL labor issues being in the courts. As one prominent long time active San Diego judge told me, “we have the tendency to keep peeling the onion and even deconstruct that of which took years of battles, negotiations and decades to build”. Another prominent San Diego sports Lawyer and USD Law professor, Len Simon, stated that, “the NFL draft, salary caps, wage scales, and the current free agency system are all illegal outside of a the CBA. If left in the courts too long it can potentially all be unraveled.”

From their prospective, it's better not to play than to watch your team that has no QB a rookie WR and an aging running back get throttled for 16 games. Seriously, the Bengals could go 0-16 if we play a full season with a limited TC.

Dago
Saints coaches have also said they were not a part of this and that they support the owners. correct. I have done some reading and it appears that this is not any kind of a union and that a lot of coaches don't even belong to the organization. as a matter of fact, this organization issued this without getting any coach's signaturestupid move on their part
Dago
progress?http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/NFL-owners-Jerry-Jones-Robert-Kraft-Jerry-Richardson-Roger-Goodell-meet-secretly-060111when I first read this, I only saw that Goodell and some owners were having a secret meeting and that made me think that we were in trouble. But the fact that Smith was there, that this meeting was not court ordered, and that they aren't playing the public opinion game with it makes me think that they all realize that it's time to chit or get off the pot. Dago
http://mike-freeman.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6264363/29742650HOPE: That is a word that's being used repeatedly on Thursday by officials from both the owner and player side. When both are speaking the same language there's likely some progress being made. And that's what's happening. Progress is being made. Not PR progress. Not phony progress. Serious progress in ending this nasty and protracted battle, I'm told by multiple sources. This doesn't mean a deal is imminent but as one high ranking member of the trade association said to me via text: "This is the first time in many months I feel like we're headed in the right direction."They still may not get an agreement for months to come but this is the most hopeful I've heard many of the key players in this battle be in quite some time. This is why. I've been able to confirm that owners and members of the trade association have had (not so) secret meetings in Chicago this week. But there's another caveat that hasn't been reported until now and it's the most interesting aspect. Both Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith have been asked repeatedly by their respective constituents to make sure no games are missed. I'm told more reasonable owners who also have more to lose (Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones among them) have been able to quell more hard line owners and convince trade association officials that owners are sincere in getting something done.Meanwhile, Smith has been approached by players, I'm told, that now is a prime opportunity to get a deal done. Smith has also become more open to talking since the 8th circuit setback a few weeks ago.So, rather organically and individually, cooler heads are prevailing on both sides.Does a deal get done now? No way. But, again, I'm told progress is being made. Let's be clear, however. Things are still contentious. This could all break down any moment.Still, both sides say there's hope, and when is the last time you heard that word.
Shredman
they are still saying, 6th 7th of JULY before a deal may get done, that leaves a window of about 4 days for FAs before training camps open, no otas, and FAs being thrown right into the fire..... we are not gonna see a high quality product like we are use to seeingand these first yr coaches and rookie qbs.... may as well just mark those guys off from even being able to compete with teams that are stacked with vet players and coachesand if it lingers into end of Julymay as well cancel the season, even with the new rules in place, we are gonna see very very serious injuries on the field with skill players and trench guysyou cant just start busting each other up with no otas or TC and expect anything but broken bones
DD: Objective Elite
Late last night after I got home form the game, I was watching the NFLN with the wife. They were talking about what else, the lockout. My wife who couldn't care less about football, had a great idea. She suggested the NFLPA fire Smith and the owners fire Goodell. If those two are what's causing this to drag on and on, get rid of those clowns and get people to the table, that want to negotiate.Thoughts? Shredman
well there a few things that can happen now the way i understand, (which may be way off base considering i am not a lawyer, nor have i played one on TV lol )heres the latest link from A S I have foundhttp://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6618259lets look at what could happen tomorrowmost see the Court either finding in favor of the NFL or waiting till JULY to decidethats a Loss for the NFLPA these secret meetings are our best hope at this point.....I think it would be wonderful to hear There is a new CBA and FA starts at Midnight EST. and we could very well hear that any day.....i just dont see how the courts would have the power to Find in Favor of the NFLPA tomorrow and order the NFL to open their doors and play under 2010 rules.....altho that would be wonderfulwe could all be talking about our new Free Agents this weekend lolaint gonna happen
Big_L
I don't think the commissioner will go quietly into the night, even though it probably would be the single biggest step on the road to getting this lockout resolved. I'm sure if the league has to pay all that TV money back to the networks, this thing will get worked out. I don't see what is so hard about giving retired players some kind of health insurance and starting some kind of rookie salary cap. All the money saved by not having to pay out these large contracts to rookies would easily offset the insurance bill.
Big_L
I don't think anyone rational disagrees this point Big_L...If we can agree here of all places, I just don't get why we can't be talking about FA signings and the up coming season as of right now. I'm sure some kind of way the almighty dollar is involved, but this is getting old, fast
Big_L
No doubt it is about the all mighty dollar. Greed is as natural amongst humans as gators are to swamps! Or peach trees in GA. Or crackheads in DC.
Big_L
Right on both accounts. I've worked many a year in and out of DC and I can attest to that!I've never been there, but the word gets around.
