The Final 8 Rule

Recommended Posts

If the league does impose the 2010 system, it will be interesting to see if it brings back the "Final Eight" plan. In an uncapped year, the top eight finishers from the previous season are handcuffed in free agency: The four teams that played in the title games can sign a free agent only if they lose a free agent, and the four teams that lost in the divisional round of the playoffs can sign a player at a modest cost, roughly $3.8 million in the first year.

Look at the impact on teams in search of pass-rushers. The Falcons went into the draft without free agency or trades and felt they needed two key parts -- a pass-rusher and a wide receiver. They traded five draft choices to move up to take wide receiver Julio Jones, feeling they could get the pass-rushing defensive end in free agency. Most people believe the Falcons like Ray Edwards of the Vikings, but he would be a restricted free agent in the 2010 system because he doesn't have six years of experience.

Jason Babin of the Titans is the best end available in the 2010 system, but most people believe he will follow former Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn to Philadelphia. Because the Falcons lost in the divisional round, they can only try to lure a free agent with a first-year salary of less than $4 million. To get a pass-rusher, they will have to make a trade.

I've been thinking about this, especially when people bring up signing Asomugha, and Edwards. We can also sign one if we lose a guy in free agency right? I was thinking that's how it works, but we would probably have to wait until somebody signed one of our guys until we could sign somebody.

According to the NFL sources - they have a committee that has been drafting a new set of rules to use in t he event that the lockout is lifted and no CBA is in place. I understand it's quite different from the 2010 rules.

I posted it here the other day.

If Atlanta loses Clabo, they can sign a free agent of equal value.

I'm trying to figure out why the Eagles would want Babin?

Eagles biggest need = starting corner opposite Assante Samuel

Eagles defensive ends = Trent Cole(pro-bowler), Brandon Graham(1st round draft pick)

How do you value of a free agent, contract size?

not sure exactly the formula - but I think there is some type of formula or grading system. I'm sure the dollar amount of the contract is the pre-imminent factor but not sure that its the only factor.

its a good question.

If the D Line coach moves from Tenn to Philly he will more than likely implement that rotational wide line play.

I do not beleive he will go to Philly to start, just more or less be there to solidify depth.

I really don't think Babin is starting material. He is the prototypical "system specific" player as our beloved

TD likes to put it.

i can assure you td and blank have a plan, i am willing to bet they already have a verbal committment unofficially of course from who they want, so expect there to be a quick deal go in place once free agency is lifted.

at first i thought they may feel more comfortable with abe and bierrman one more year thats why they got their wr. but when they gave up next years first, and with abes age, they are either incompetent or already have a plan. they could not possibly expect to depend on abe and bierman for two more years. td is not incompetent maybe a bit agressive, and i highly doubt td is thinking abe and biermann are the solutions for two more years, which means he must already have a plan for a fa de. i expect it to be edwards, and may come in the form of a trade using jenkins, ja98, or a sign and trade with clabo.
