since68andcounting
Just assuming for a minute that we decided all our RFAs were crucial. That we wanted to go into 2011 with the same team + Julio. Assume that we don't have a better RT than Clabo, we need Dahl and Blaylock, and that Nicholas is needed as a rotational LB especially with Petersons age. Assuming we could restructure JA and Norwood at a price more relative to their role if we wanted to.Let's also assume we're gonna stand pat at nickel back and go after ONE big DE free agent. Is this possible financially under the cap? Or is there even a cap this year, so would it matter? This is hypothetical. I'm not saying this is what we want to do. Just what are the real $$$ in this situation?

Tandy
There is no cap until there is a CBA. Unless the NFL decides to include it in their "rules"
yardbird?
Maybe you could borrow some from the Glazer boys.......since they won't spend any on the team they own.
Karst41
Even without a CAP in place for this year, it would be wise tosign FA's as if there were.I think that we will release a few players and could have somewhere in the $40 mil range toplay with. This would also include signing the existing players that we want to keep.I am expecting guys like Dahl and Clabo to sign $5+ mil contractsSnelling is a $3 mil guyGrimes? My guess is anywhere between $5-8 milJulio Jones is going to sign a $ 50+ Mil contract who knows what the 2012 hit will be.But I would guess $10+ MilBy my guestimations, I am speculating that we have room for 2 Major FA signingsfor players from other teams. If we were to sign a 3rd player such as a LT, then we will have to Front load thecontracts for the un capped year to avoid being over the next CAP that is set in place.I would also love to hear the opinions on this from (politely asking)PeytonCappyTandyGazooDraftfan

In the last capped year, the cap was just under $130m. I can see Claybo getting at least $6m-7m per year under a long term deal, and I'd be surprised if we can resign Grimes long term for less than $7m a year (Foxworth's contract avergaed $7m a year when he left, and he didn't have a Pro-bowl to his name). Nicholas and Dahl are probably $4m-5m. We also have Snelling, Weems and Julio to add.Everyone want to spend big on the best DE/CBs available, but this team is going to have to spend a lot of money just to keep this roster together, and next year we have Lofton, Decoud and Biermann to think about. If the NFL is forced to re-open by the court, we have to proceed on the assumption that a new CBA will be reached at some point and that a salary cap will return. It would be foolish to overpsend now, and have to tear everything apart in 2 years time because we are in cap ****. Besides, if the owners open up the cheque book in an uncapped year it would send out totally the wrong message to the players at a time when the NFL won't want the give the players a reason to believe that a free market for talent is in their best interest. takeitdown
I think for most guys we add, we'll have to subtract a guy.So, imagine signing Clabo, Dahl, Blalock, Grimes, Snelling for a total of 27m total yearly. That's a decent chunk. Now, to get a DE, we'd need to drop salary, which I think we can do with Davis and Anderson (7M combined salary). We also can drop Mike Peterson if we go toward a younger LB.The people coming due really cost a lot more than it seems. That's why if Reynolds and Johnson are ready to step in at OL, it helps a lot, because we save 12M of that 27M...and that gives us flexibility to get more people/have room to sign our guys next year.
