Cris Carter Thinks Nnamdi Asomugha Should Sign With Atlanta

Recommended Posts

On NFL Live, an ESPN program, analyst Cris Carter thinks that the Atlanta Falcons would be the best fit for free-agent corner Nnamdi Asomugha. This is a big statement, because if it were to happen it would create all sorts of problems on the depth chart.

I look for the Atlanta Falcons. They traded most of their draft picks to move up in the draft because they had a player they targeted in Julio Jones. Now they need to address their defensive needs, especially their secondary. He [Asomugha] would give them the ability to play zone coverage and man, which most teams don't have because they don't have versatility at the corner-back spot.

While Carter makes a great point that having versatility opens up the playbook defensively, I still have no idea how this would go down with Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes. The depth chart would be messed up with Grimes most likely being demoted to the nickel spot which would upset him a great deal because he's been terrific at intercepting passes.

Demote Robinson? Then you've upsetted your big, free-agent signing from a year before, limiting his playing time. This would never happen unless Brent Grimes left the football team. I don't see that happening any time soon because just recently he was training with Matt Ryan and the guys at a local high school.

Carter had more to say though:

The Philadelphia's and Atlanta's, I think because he's been in Oakland and hasn't played on that high level like were used to seeing great players. I think he wants that stage.

The Falcons have more pressing issues, mainly at the Defensive End position. Atlanta has been linked to Ray Edwards and Charles Johnson two highly sought after, potential free-agents.

I bet Grimes and Robinson would welcome Nnamdi with open arms. It is not often you can bring in the top corner in the game. They would work it out just like Woodson worked it out in GB. Think about Nnamdi playing the rover role in our defense.

The Falcons would never do this. When was the last time we signed a top tiered FA? Julius Peppers?

Albeit our defense would improve dramatically with Nnamdi locking down the number one WR. We can put Grimes at number 2 and Robinson in the slot (although he'd be an expensive slot CB). Then we could roll over a safety to help Grimes over the top, which is where he gets beat most of the time, i.e. have the safety lay the WR out when someone tries to throw a jump ball to Grimes' side.'

We can leave Nnamdi on a island.

Wow if we get CB Asomugha and DE Charles Johnson. We would have the best team in the NFL...

You mean other than Turner and Robinson?

Figuring out the depth chart with Namdi, Grimes, and Robinson would be an awesome problem to have.

He would be expensive but it would be nice. If they use the 2010 free agency rules then we would not be able to sign him because we would be limited how much we could pay him in year 1.

Usually you don't see guys like this hit the open market.

This signing would be a stronger move than grabbing a DE IMO and would help our DLine out as well as our ability to blitz. However,Aso would have to really want to be on a winning team becuase I don't see us giving him the money that, say, the Cowboys or Redskins would.

We should sign Cullen Jenkins DE Green Bay. Josh Wilson DB Baltimore, Owens out. I have faith Robinson will play better this year and I am more than cool with Grimes. I would love to sign Trueblood RT from the Bucs.

Well there are two ways to make your pass rush better, get better pass rush from your dline or bring in big time CB's.

Ofcourse I would love Nnamdi becasue lets face it we become the best all around team in the league.

With the addition of Julio we can throw it and we can run it, with the addition of Nnamdi we can play more games like we did againt the aints in the Dome.

While a DE does make sense, Nnamdi also makes a lot of sense. We would have to give a lot up for him but he makes us the best overall team in the NFL.

I'd love a grouping of Nnamdi, Dunta, and Brent ala Cromartie, Revis, and Wilson.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have Nnamdi. Just don't think it will work fiscally. We just paid Dunte a huge contract and another premier CB is risky, financially. What if we went a different path and did something like this. Good, young, lot's of upside... sign Cullen Jenkins DE Green Bay. Josh Wilson DB Baltimore, Owens out. I have faith Robinson will play better this year and I am more than cool with Grimes. I would love to sign Trueblood RT (Boston College, 2nd round pick) from the Bucs. This would help with draft picks lost without as much risk as drafting.

Average corners can look great if the QB never has time to throw. And great corners can look average if there's no pass rush.

If we can get Nnamdi AND a bigtime passrushing DE in free agency, then go for it. If it's one or the other, then

I think pass rush is more important.

In today's NFL you need 3 strong DBs. This will upset some posters, but I don't think Grimes starts for any other team in the league other than the Falcons.

We developed him and he fits our system, but he is still a huge liability in run support. If we signed Nnamdi and put him at corner Grimes would flourish as a nickel.

I agree with one thing, Grimes would flourish in the Nickel with Robinson and Nnamdi. Do not agree with anything else.

This is becoming an increasingly passing oriented league, and 3 good corners is soon to be a necessity rather than a luxury. If we kept all 3 (if we sign scrabble, Grimes is gone IMO, but I can still dream), Grimes wouldn't be the "slot guy" per se, but would instead be called upon to cover the shortest reciver; guys like Colston eat him up.
