Now that we have Jacquizz Rodgers

Recommended Posts

Definition: A forward pass in which the defensive linemen are allowed to get through the offensive line while two offensive linemen run wide to a specific side of the field and then turn and block upfield for a running back who takes a short pass from the quarterback.

Examples:

A screen pass can be very effective against aggressive defenses who rush the quarterback.

I would be excited to see Jacquizz Rodgers catch a screen pass.

Thanks for the definition Webster. And yes, we will finally see the screen this year, and it should take tons of pressure off of Ryan. And dont forget about Julio, he caught a ton of screens at Alabama.

Valdez or Will Svitek are athletic tackles that should allow us to be able to screen more.

I think half of the reason why we didnt screen more is because thats not a strength of our O-Lineman... Our younger O-lineman is more athletic.

I think Baker and Blalock are athletic enough to do more screens.

We shall see

The key to a screen is holding the defensive linemen long enough for the RB/receiver to get in place - then letting them into the backfield - at which time the QB can dump the screen off.

They aren't able to hold them long enough most of the time. They do ok against some of the 4-3 teams - but the 3-4 teams - they struggle with. Which means - they let them into the backfield too soon - and the play is busted and since they are coming unchallenged - Ryan has little hope of avoiding a sack, forced fumble or other disaster.

Screens are awesome against an aggressive defense - but your linemen have to be able to hold that D just long enough before releasing them and moving downfield.

I'm sure we'll see it. Quizz is going to be an absolute steal for this team. I really don't understand how he slid all the way to the fifth round.

He slid because of his combine numbers. If you are looking for a RB to run the ball they can be big and slow or small and fast. Quizz is small and slow. That is why people who think we are getting him to be lightening to Turner's thunder are going to be disappointed. We got him to be a third down back... to catch the ball out of the back field and get 2-4 yards. He will be great in that role. He will be our Kevin Faulk. He has a quick burst to get past the initial level of defenders which is all you are looking for on 3rd down. He isn't going to be breaking 30 yard runs. He is going to give us an option on 3rd down that will make defenses have to respect run, pass, play action and the screen. It is something we have sorely missed.

Hmmmmmmmm Ryan has little time to get off a pass against a 4 man rush thats leaving the LBs to make tackles , COULD it be the reason why we didn't see more screen passes ?

Partly, but i think the lack of a running back that is a receiving threat really limits Ryan even more. When we spread the offense out and go obvious pass Ryan is deadly, unless the secondary were facing is simply dominating. But in the traditional I formation or 1 back formation with Turner or Snelling in the defense pretty much can focus on runstopping only, as Turner has no effect as a receiver; and snelling while he has good hands, is not very elusive. Fast forward with Rodgers in the game. If the kid can run effectively in the pros, which I think he can; what happens when you dump off or screen the ball to him? Suddenly you have a much more elusive player who is excellent in open space. So if teams crowd the line they will pay.

Now that we drafted Jacquizz Rodgers, are we finally going to start running screen plays? It infuriates me to no end how Mularky completely disregards this play as an option.

i doubt it, he would run em in preseason never during the season. even when we had jerious norwood healthy we didnt run screens

The people still blaming Mularkey for a lack of screens simply don't understand the full make up of this team.

I agree. The only RB we had capable of turning the screen into a viable option was basically in a body cast the whole season (JN) . Look at some tape from 2008 (Weems, Douglas, Norwood highlights especially) and you will see a lot more reverses, screens, etc.

Quizz and Kerry Meier are going to bring some serious versatility to our offense.

Quizz will give us consistent hands out of the backfield, which we haven't had. And getting Meier back healthy will give us a guy who can throw the ball (he was a QB in college) as well as run routes and catch.

Imagine a play where Meier starts to run a reverse ... and as the D comes up to stop him he puts the ball overtop of the pursuit to Quizz, who chip blocked and then got open behind the defense.

Now that would add a nice little wrinkle to things....
