Impact of This Draft Class

Julio Jones is a legit 9 route receiver with speed and strength to take on and defeat NFL cornerbacks. One overlooked aspect of Jones' game is his blocking. Combined with his physicality this presents opposing defenses with the problem of playing up on the line and being blocked by Jones, or playing off the line giving our backs room to work on run plays and/or giving Jones an opportunity to run free if the play is a pass instead of a run.

How our 3 WR sets might work: White on the outside with Jones and Jenkins working the other side and the slot. With either Mughelli or Gonzalez/Peele blocking, our 3 WR set becomes a very effective run formation. Most teams have a quick, smaller corner playing the slot. Both Jenkins and Jones have the height size and strength to defeat these nickel backs. Ryan keeps his quick release passing game going, while hopefully improving our average yards per pass.

Our 3rd round pick Dent was listed as an ILB, and while we already have Lofton, I look at it like this...Lofton might be more effective outside, with Dent in the middle. Do not be surprised to see this happen. MLB is a very physically intense position to play. A slower big bodied LB like Dent would be good better at MLB, allowing Lofton to use his speed outside (Lofton plays faster than his 40 time). We already know Lofton can take on blockers which a lot of OLBs have a hard time doing. Moving to OLB might also extend Lofton's career.

Jacquizz Rogers does not have breakaway speed, but how many long runs will an RB have in a typical season? It will be fun watching big defenders almost break thier ankles trying to keep up with Rogers change of direction. And with his short height Rogers will be hard to find behind those big O linemen until he gets thru the D line, right. FACT: Rogers fumbled ONCE in 900 touches in college!

Note to Mularkey: How about the old Statue of Liberty play, just for Rogers? With Ryans quick release and Rogers size, this is an ideal draw-type play.

Not sure what Bosher will be for us yet, in college he both kicked and punted. Our kicker is older, our punter is a FA. Stay tuned.

Andrews looks like a typical project at guard, a position we have some depth at.

Matthews is interesting. He could go to OLB, where we have no real depth at all, or join a crowded (at this time anyway) D line where someone would be the odd man out. Matthews looks like a player, but then again so did Sidbury, Anderson, Davis...and look at the mixed results we have had with them.

Comments welcome.

Pains me to say this.

Jones is a legit 9 route receiver.

Matt Ryan is not a 9 route QB, and IMHO does not need to be either.

More like Mularkey isn't a 9 route OC. Matt can make the throws, it's just tough to do so when you've been handcuffed.

Probably most interesting is the fact that you pointed out, and correctly, that Matthews was a SLB in college. Be interesting to see where he ends up--or does he just get PSquaded or cut.

Good assessment overall, although i highly doubt we see the statue of liberty play :)

A big part of that is our O line, our linemen are not great pass blockers. Ryan has to throw the ball within 2 to 3 seconds or be sacked. Our WRs are basically playing within 15 yards of the LOS most the time. Combine that with Ryan's quick release, play recognition and over reliance on Tony Gonzalez, and you come up with a poor average yards per pass stat. Great for ball control, lousy for explosive big yardage scoring plays (which Jones is supposed to help out...)

While I like the acquisition of Jones, he will not be very effective if he takes 3 to 4 seconds to get open while Ryan only has 2 or 3 seconds to get rid of the ball. Improving our pass protection is going to be a must before next season.

One of the best running plays the Falcons had was the draw play. William Andrews made a living running that play. The Statue of Liberty play is just about the same thing with some trickery involved.

Another formation/play I want to see: the unbalanced line.

Hey I can dream, can't I...:P

Matthews played SLB his freshman year, then was moved to DE as a sophomore.

It's very easy to blitz from an 8 in the box look or when they aren't scared of our offense going over top. It's not that we have a bad line. It's because our weapons scare nobody deep so they crowd the line.
