Vikings indicate they’ll try to keep Ray Edwards

The Vikings weren’t able to re-sign Sidney Rice before the work stoppage hit, but VP of Player Personnel Rick Spielman has indicated previously that the team was interested in doing so.

The team will likely try to get him back after a new CBA is reached. They may also try to keep defensive end Ray Edwards, who many league observers assumed was on his way out.

During his appearance Friday on PFT Live, Spielman was asked who his biggest priorities would be among his free agents.

The first name that came up: Ray Edwards. Rice was next.

“We have a history of guys who are young who are coming into a second contract. . . . Those are the guys historically we’ve tried to definitely keep,” Spielman said.

lol I knew this post was coming from you.

On the flip side of things, I have mixed feelings about Edwards and what he would actually do to contribute to this team. All I DO no is that we need serious help on D.

Sure, I dont believe ANYONE was stopping GB last year during their playoff run...the only people that stopped GB was themselves, and I try to keep that in mind before panicking like some other posters claiming our D is swiss cheese.

We definitely could use some help and a serious spark from our DLine position IMO, I just dont really know at this point who (if anyone) we should go after.

I'm going to be honest for a moment. This is why I didn't get the "early bird phoenix flame" treatment here. Its because if we did get Edwards I would simply stay put and find as many benefits no matter how obscure. Even though I may have ill feelings about the Vikings, I think that any one player from there could come here and be a big help at any position. The Viking's problem was Brad, not the players and Edwards could be very good on any team so long as he stops taking plays off, not get winded while rushing the passer, wrap up on tackles, and take advantage of clear openings. Maybe Frazier believes that he can do this without Brad around.

I know that our staff, who loves training players UP, would make an impact on him. That said, I believe that our staff can take almost any player and make him awesome, so whether we do or don't is fine.

Tell you man, it is a little strange that we always seem to reall really want expensive guys who are not tremendous upgrades and would be in a rotation. I wouldn't mind paying way less for a roleplayer willing to learn and earn a second chance. Ala Middleton who was drafted by us and now starts for J-Ville.

I would rather sign Babin or Cullen Jenkins to a UFA deal than trade a high pick and pay top 5 money to Ray Edwards.

We have too much youth potential, and Babin has showed the past couple seasons he is more than good as a pass rush DE. Might have to keep Jamaal for our base package though.

Plus, in all truth if Biermann had been a starter for the Vikes I think he would have had even more sacks. Here we rotate those guys a lot. Biermann see's more time in the beginning and end of a game. No time to get a rhythm. Abe is in a little more.

Obviously since the Williams wall will come crumbling down for a 4 week suspension after the Starcaps ruling it is even more important they keep Edwards. It has all been dependent upon how many years of service before a veteran qualifies as an UFA. If it goes back to last year then the Vikings have a ton of leverage if it reverts back to 4 I would think Blank will drop a dumptruck full of cash with the incentive of coming to a perennial winner and potential contender.

ok I AM SO SICK OF YOU REVISIONIST HISTORY DUDES ON HERE ACTING LIKE THE PACKERS WERE INVINCIBLE. Green Bay won, true; but don't try to act like everything that could go wrong didn't go wrong in that playoff game. Moore, Nicholas, and Abraham all didn't wrap up on SURE sacks on 3rd downs that would have killed scoring drives. Owens getting that holding penalty on Babs 3rd down sack didn't help much. yeah the interceptions & fumble (1 for a pick 6) hurt big time. the Pack played a good game but our MISTAKES made them look like world beaters. the chances of us playing another game like is slim to none

This is the one game people are still whining about the defense which is typically true but the offense uncharacteristacally imploded with very costly mistakes as well.

How did Pittsburgh do? Didn't they already have an established pass rush and better overall defense???

Bro...you're making the point for me! I clearly state "I'm NOT going to try and act like some of these poster PANICKING claiming that our D is Swiss Cheese". There was PLENTY of mistakes to go around our entire D to help make GBs offense seem invisible.

ok then I apologize. but you did say that nobody was beating Green Bay when they got a lot of breaks. not taking anything against them because they were the only team besides us that I thought would win the Super Bowl, I just didn't like we went out like chumps lol

Yes, but again...how did the Steelers defense do???

well the held the Packers to 50 yards rushing. got 3 sacks on Aaron Rodgers. forced the Packers to punt 5 times. all in all the Steelers played pretty good defense, they just lost the turnover battle 4 to 0
