Guest jb aka johnnybuc
Just thought you'd like to know.Jerry Rice, speaking recently on Sirius radio, pointed to Green's superior hands in explaining why he would favor the Georgia receiver to Jones, his Alabama counterpart. Rice's full comments, when asked which college wideout he would select first between the two: "I would have to say A.J. Green because the guy, he makes plays. He makes plays and he doesn't drop the ball as much and that's part of Jones, what he's going to have to work on. Julio Jones, he's going to have to work on catching the football. So, maybe right now he's that young pup right now, but once you get to that level, that next level, teams are not going to afford to let you drop footballs. "That was something that Bill Walsh would always preach: 'If you drop footballs you're not going to be with the San Francisco 49ers.' So, he's very talented, but I think that phase of the game he's going to have to work on. But Green right now, he gets the thumbs up right here."I realize you all know so much more than Jerry Rice about the wide receiver position but I thought you may want to hear from someone that isn't trying to blow smoke up your keister. Neg away, ladies!

FalconsfanDK
i believe they also mentioned that rice himself had problems dropping passes coming out of college... something he quickly learned not to.Julio has the skills, and it has been proven time and time again, that players can be coached to avoid drops. we have one of those players on the team in roddy white, which will only help mr. jones
Dharma Initiative
Whoa, I doubt Jones even makes the roster once TD hears about this

vel
So basically Green is only better because of his hands. Once Julio gets the drops fixed after working with Roddy, Tony, and Terry what will be the argument?
Terber
It's funny that Jerry Rice would talk about a young receiver coming into the NFL with questions of drops, considering he had the very same question marks coming in as well. Also, his first few years in the NFL were marked with MANY big drops. Gotta love revisionist history.
Terber
Also, the drop "issue" is just a talking point by the media and over analytical fans. Julio did not have many drops in college relative to the many big catches. Also, he played with game manager quarterbacks who were terrible with there timing on pass plays....TRUTH
kiwifalcon
They should have asked Jerry which situation would you rather be in for a rookie WRer the Falcons or the Bengals???An offense that potientially with Jones can be top 5 in the league..Poor AJ Green is going to a team that is in limbo and is for them to turn it around right away without a real QB he is going to have to be the 2nd coming of Jerry Rice good luck with that where as JJ will be given time to shine as with all the weapons we have JJ's will have the oppourtunity to make a significant impact with the Falcons. At the end of the day F/Balls a team sport and though AJ may be slightly better now ask him truely what situation he'd like to be in Falcons or the Bengals he'd say Falcons hands down. I feel bad for AJ, also he may be playing with a rookie quarterback. he better hope mediocre Carson Palmer decides to play or it will suck for AJ no matter how talented he is....suck for years. Firstiary
When they showed video of Jones on ESPN after he was drafted, they showed about four drops and all of them were on EASY short passes. I have to think that's fixable.

Faithful Falcon
When you want to tell someone how to play football, Jerry Rice is someone that I would recommend, but as far as being an expert. Need I say more?

I have to think that's fixable.I agree with you. Finneran had the drops (a lot of people on the boards called him Skillet Hands) but corrected it to become one of our most reliable receivers. Roddy had the drops his first couple years and fixed the problem as well.Everything I've read says that JJ has had issues making the "easy" catch but is clutch with the tough ones. That is EXACTLY how Roddy and Finn were. It is a concentration issue, not a hands issue. That is entirely correctable.
Aftermath
so Julio Jones isn't as NFL ready as Green. I don't recall Green being available when we picked at 6. we traded alot to get Julio, but we would have traded even more to get Green and I just don't think that there is that much difference between the two. atljbo
“He’s better than A.J.,” one AFC front-office executive told me Saturday. “He’s faster, more physical, tough as [expletive], strong as [expletive]. He’s a faster [Anquan] Boldin.”I think we will be okBoth are 2 differnt WR's but both are great WR's prospects

HASHBROWN3
Rice can watch the ESPN highlights just like anyone else. All he did was state his opinion about the obvious. Most all pundits had Julio rated under AJ Green. But there were a number of folks who said after the combine that Julio could end up being the best pro. Everyone knew, including TD and staff, that JJ had more drops than he needed to have. But it was clear it was due to trying to make a play and run before he had possession. This is easily corrected w/ good coaching. There is a big difference between having bad hands vs an eagerness to make a play!! The guy is a beast and blocks like a demon. Alabama's Saban had nothing but praises for JJ. Rice will enjoy watching highlights of Julio Jones ripping through your secondary like wildfire. Falcons are aware of every single pro and con about JJ. Bucs will have no answer for both he and Jaquizz Rogers. Cmon buc, both these guys were head and shoulders above the rest of the wideout class.
