Report: Falcons to target Vikings DE Edwards

Citing "many" league sources, Len Pasquarelli of Sports Xchange reports that the Falcons plan to target free agent DE Ray Edwards after missing out on elite defensive ends in the draft.

The Falcons traded away their first- and second-round picks, plus, for Julio Jones. Pasquarelli acknowledges that Atlanta's pursuit could be "tricky" because the Vikings tendered Edwards as a restricted free agent, and 2010 NFL rules are expected to remain in place. He'll be under Minnesota's control. It's possible the Vikings and Falcons could work out a sign-and-trade deal.

As I mentioned in another thread, we have some very good defensive ends. We need to add the guy who absolutely terrorizes the quarterback. He needs to have that quick first step and the upper body strength to bring the quarterback down in lieu of just taggin' him like our current players do. Our defensive ends play all around good football and would amazing as pass rushers in flag football.

Am I the only one who does NOT want Ray Edwards? The guy is more than likely going to cost us picks to get, and he's been surrounded by the best D line his entire career. I doubt this guy has ever seen a double team.

I can see your point in that the rest of the line is so good it may be a fluke but who is to say the Falcons won't be that good or comparable from NT to RDE.

What are the choices in free agency which assumes free agency reverts back to 4 years for eligibility?

Ray Edwards at 26 has had success for several years in exactly the position the Falcons need him in.

Kiwanuka who is 28 has been bouncing back and forth between DE and SLB.

Charles Johnson who will be 25 by training camp has finally had success after 4 seasons. Did it take the absence of Peppers for him to finally step up or is he another one hit wonder Peerless Price guy?

We can speculate whether Edwards talent is over rated due to the rest of the line but one thing seems clear to me he is the only one of the three that has had consistent success over a number of years.

Johnson has always been a good rotation guy, Fox wouldn't give him the chance to start. Fox was funky like that. His first chance to start, he tore it up.

I have said all along, a player is only as good as the person beside him allows him to be. Edwards and Allen has a freakin wall between them that demands attention from the offensive line. If we had a good DT lined up beside Biermann, I promise his sack numbers will go up. Take Babs away from Abe and lets see if his sack number stays above 10

We may have that person if Peria Jerry comes back like some say he might.

This is from roto-world:

Impending free agent DE Charles Johnson is happy not to receive the Panthers' franchise tag, but he's still interested in re-signing under a long-term deal.

Yeah, definitely," Johnson said. "I hope I do. I've been here forever it seems and I don't want to relocation." Johnson recently spoke with new coach Ron Rivera and thinks the "change is good" in Carolina.

That being said, I would have to think that we'd be the team he'd sign with if he has the option to leave considering he went to college here and the fact that we're obviously the team that looks to give him the best chance to win a Superbowl when comparing us to Carolina.

If the falcons come knocking I will believe that statement about as much as Brett Favre saying "I am going to retire"

If he plays to his potential I guarantee our pass rush will be greatly improved. No need in spending big money on free agents just because the media says DE is our biggest need. There are Saints fans at my job that actually agreed with my comment

Carolina will franchise him anyway but id they dont, we have a great chance of getting him. He's a local guy and the idea of coming home and playing for a SB contender will be impossible to pass up for any player

Carolina shot that wad by franchising Ryan Kalil, they are banking on the CBA not being renewed and Johnson remaining a RFA under 2010 rules.

If there is a new CBA, or the owners are forced to end the lockout, and decide to go back to pre 2010 rules on free agency then Johnson is a FA.

None of the FA are better then Abe... Abe is one of the best in the business.

Now as of LDE... We are lucky.. if the CBA gets done.. Charles Johnson, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Ray Edwards are all LDE's.

If i could pick i would want Charles Johnson 1st... Dude is only 25 years old and entering his prime... Mathias Kiwanuka would be my 2nd choice if he checks out physically... Dude was so good against the run and pass rush... He took Osi starting spot for a minute..... Ray Edwards is also a really good LDE

I cant possibly see the reasoning behind wanting Kiwi ahead of Edwards. He is 2 years older, has poorer stats and has had a significant neck injury...

Just sayin...

If anythign I think the guy we get will be the LDE and Biermann would be Abraham's replacement

I don'[t know.

If Biermann can't get many sacks against a team's RT I doubt he'll be any more effective going against the leagues great LT's. LDE is usually where your best DE lines up against and I shudder to think that Biermann would be our best DE. :o

I've heard the name Charles Johnson from Carolina bandied around some but I was wondering who in free agency is actually better than John Abraham and Kroy Bierman? Hopefully there is a realistic solution in a fairly young player.

Nobody really.

Our rotation lets Abe rest and be good enough to get 15 sacks for us

A solid pass rusher opposite Abe would make Biermann our main rotation guy

Biermann subbing in for Abe on running situations and ST seems fine to me

Biermann, Sidbury, Matthews or another pick could then develop into JA55's replacement

*I apologize if some of this was previously posted

Another thing..

Johnson wants to get his payday, CAR will give it to him, but he is from UGA and would be leaving a rebuilding team

Kiwa is a part of a Dline that has 3 starters on it already, Tuck, Osi, JPP, he will want a starting spot at OLB or DE wherever he goes...his injury will make him less expensive though

Edwards is the most likely, he will get the money he wants, and go to a winning team, but is he a pass rusher or just on a really good Dline? I think he is a better option than Biermann and can produce like he did in MIN or maybe even better
